Teaching: Trials And Temptations

Trials:
These are circumstances, tribulations and persecutions that we are meant to endure, they are not cause by our sins, rather by our standing for righteousness in a sinful world (Matt.5:10-12).

Note:
1. The old testament saints suffered trials (Heb.11:36-38).
2. Believers today suffered persecutions (Acts.8:1-4, Jn.16:33, Matt.5:10-11).
3. Believers are partakers with Christ suffering (1Pet.4:12-16)
4. Trials come to refine us (1Pet.1:6-7).

Temptations:
Temptations are not sin, yielding to temptation is (Jms.1:14-15), but Satan uses temptation to cause is to sin (Matt.4:3), we must resist temptation to sin (Pro.1:10).
Note: God Does Not Tempt Us (Jms.1:13-16).

Sources Of Temptation:( How Or Where Does Temptation Come From?)

1. Satan tempt us and he is the chief tempter (Matt.4:3)
i.He tempted Adam and Eve in the beginning (Gen.3:1-7).
ii. He tempt us (1Cor.2:11, 11:3, 1Thess.3:5)
iii. Jesus was tempted by the devil (Matt.4:3)

2. The world provide temptation (1Jn.2:15-17, Matt.13:22).
i. Desire and love for earthly riches is a snare (1Tim.6:6-10)

3. Our own desire entice(tempt) us (Jms.1:14).
i.This desire gives birth to sin (Jms.1:15).
ii. Full grown sin gives birth to death(Jms.1:15).

Note:
Jesus was tempted in all point as we are, yet without sin(Heb.4:15), in all point include:

1. Bodily temptation: to satisfy the desires of the flesh (Matt.4:3-4).

2. Soul temptation: to show his special relationship with the Father (Matt.4:5-7).

3. Spirit temptation: to worship Satan and receive power (Matt.4:8-10).

How to overcome temptation:

1. Pray to be kept from temptation (Matt.6:13).

Note:
you don’t pray to stop temptation, you pray to overcome them.

2. Be careful not to be tempted by the sins of those we try to help(Gal.6:1).

3. We resist temptation (Pro.1:10, Rom.6:13, Eph.6:13)

4. Job resist his wife evil counsel (Job.2:9-10)

5. God is able to rescue the righteous, make a way of escape (2Pet.2:9, 1Cor.10:13)

6. Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee(Jms.4:7).

Teaching: Outline And Content Of The Pauline Prayers ( Series One, Part One)

Text: Ephesians.1:15 -23
Intro: Paul has given his life for the course of the Gospel, always visiting the brethren whom he has build up in the faith. having heard of the faith of the brethren and their love towards all the saints, he cease not to give thanks to God and make mention of them in his prayers(Eph.1:15-16), for this course he prayed .
Ephesians 1:17
[17]That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,(a)
The phrase “The God of our Lord Jesus Christ” implies a Union between God and Jesus Christ highlights the believe in One God (Deut.6:4, Eph.4:5-6,Mk.12:291,1Cor.8:4-6,1Tim.2:5).
“Father of glory” signifies God’s Majesty and Dignity often associate with his presence and power.
“may give unto you the spirit of WISDOM and REVELATION in the KNOWLEDGE of him”(Eph.1:17b).
Here the spirit of wisdom and revelation refers to the work of the Holy Spirit in imparting insight into Divine truths(Jn.14:26). It is worthy of note that the spirit of wisdom and revelation is not two different things.
The word “wisdom” translate the Greek word “sophia” it means insight, observe, it was use for Solomon Matthew 12:42
[42]The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the WISDOM (Greek – “sophia”) of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
and for Jesus also;
Matthew 13:54
[54]And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this WISDOM,(Greek – “sophia”) and these mighty works?
The word “And” in Eph.1:17 translate the Greek word “kai” it means that is or which is, it is not a conjunction for two words, it is explanatory.
The word “Revelation” translate the Greek word “apokalupsis” it means unveiling, revealing or a disclosure, observe how Paul used it.
Galatians 2:2
[2]And I went up by REVELATION,(Greek – “apokalupsis” and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
Galatians 1:12
[12]For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the REVELATION (Greek – “apokalupsis” of Jesus Christ.
So when Paul said “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him”:(Eph.1:17), it implies that what a man has insight into is what is called revelation, and what has been disclose or reveal to a man is what he has insight off or insight into.
In context of Eph.1:17 wisdom is revelation and revelation is wisdom, all is the work of the Holy Spirit it is not two different things, therefore Eph.1:17 will this be read as,
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom that is revelation in the knowledge of him:
Again, this wisdom that is revelation is in the knowledge of Christ that a believer has. The word “knowledge” translate the Greek word “epignōsis” it means precise and accurate understanding, this is not just an intellectual assent, but a precise and accurate experiential and intimate understanding of God’s character, nature and will. So Paul’s prayer is that the believer will grow in this precise and accurate understanding, the revelation knowledge of Christ.
