_SUNDAY SCHOOL_
_LESSON: FORTY-SIX_
_DATE: SUNDAY 13TH JULY 2024_

_TOPIC: PASS ON THE TORCH_

OPENING PRAYER
Father, help me to comprehend the need to 'pass on the touch'.

MEMORY VERSE: "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witness, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also". – 2Timothy 2:2

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2Kings 2:9-14

[9] And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

[10] And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

[11] And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

[12] And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

[13] He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;

[14] and he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

INTRODUCTION

To pass on the torch means to teach others unique skills, businesses, faith, etc. that we know so that whether we are around or not, others will continue the good work. Apostle Paul knew the importance of this, thus he charged Timothy to groom other faithful men in the faith and the doctrines (2Timothy 2:2). The torch of faith and expertise has to pass from one person to the other for the light to continue to burn.

TEXT REVIEW: 2Kings 2:9-14

This passage narrates the conversation between Elijah and Elisha when Elijah is about to be transported into heaven by a whirlwind. It further detailed the successful passing on of the mantle of power and the double portion of the anointing of Elijah to Elisha. The discussion reads thus:

• It came to pass .................. v9.
• Elijah said ...................... v10.
• It came to pass ............... v11.
• Elisha saw it ................ v12.
• He took up .................. v13.
• He took the ................. v14.

LESSON OUTLINES
1. INHIBITING FACTORS
2. THE BLESSINGS

INHIBITING FACTORS

Many factors hinder people from passing
on the torch but we shall examine a few of them.

• Ignorance of the enormous benefits that can be derived from duplicating oneself or skill in others prevents some people who are skillful in a particular field from teaching others the same thing they know (Exodus 18:13-18).

• The fear of the 'student' being better or greater than the 'teacher' prevents some people from passing the torch of what they know or believe to others (Proverbs 29:25).

• Pride; the self-glory of wanting to be the 'only one' skillful or knowledgeable in a given field restricts some individuals from impacting others (Philippians 2:3).

• The desire to be known and called the 'only pro' in a field prevents them from influencing other people.

• The insecurity of being relegated to the background makes some people hold on to what they know (1John 4:18).

• A myopic view of "the bigger the beter" is a constraint from accommodating others and sharing the required knowledge.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1
What are the other factors that hinder people from 'passing on the torch'.

THE BLESSINGS

Knowledge and skill transfer or passing on our faith has so many blessings. Some of these are:

• Generational Blessings: The transfer of skill or our faith to another generation brings outstanding blessings to the family and makes them stand out (2 Timothy 1:5).

• Awareness: Information goes far when it is shared and with this, comes a great level of enlightenment and education (Daniel 12:4; Hebrews 13:16).

• Experience Transfer: It enables an expert to transfer his/her wealth of experience to others who can use the skill for more inventions (Proverbs 31:1).

• Joy: There is an unexplainable excitement that comes when we share what we know with others (John 4:28-29).

• You Become A Guru: Teaching others what you know makes you a source and reference point because those who glean from your wealth of knowledge will likely refer to you and respect your authority in that field of specialization (Acts 22:3).

• It Attracts Favour: Being open-minded to let others know what we know results in goodwill (1 Kings 10:3,10).

• Multiplication: Knowledge grows rapidly when it is shared (2 Timothy 2:2).

• Sustainability: Great skills and expertise are sustained when effectively passed on to others (Titus 1:9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2
The class should discuss the consequences of refusing to 'pass on the torch' to others.

CONCLUSION
Pass on the torch and die empty (Job 1:21a; John17:4b, 8a).

CLOSING PRAYER
Father, please help me to be deliberate in teaching people what I know in Jesus' name.

ASSIGNMENT
Identify five Bible characters who passed on their knowledge to others with biblical references (2×5=10 Marks).

_LESSON: FORRY-ONE_
_DATE: SUNDAY 8TH JUNE 2025_

_TOPIC: "YESTERDAY"_

OPENING PRAYER
Father, please teach me how to handle my past in Jesus' name.

MEMORY VERSE: "‭Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before". – Philippians 3:13

BIBLE PASSAGE: Numbers 11:4-7

[4] And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

[5] We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

[6] but now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

[7] And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.

INTRODUCTION

After the children of Israel left Egypt, it is unfortunate that "Egypt" did not leave them. Despite the miracles of deliverance and divine provisions, they sill longed for the cucumbers and garlic they ate as slaves because "yesterday" was vivid in their memories. The same thing applies to some of us who refuse to let go of our past! In this lesson, we shall learn how to Overcome the urge to cling to the past. embrace today, and look on the bright side of tomorrow?

TEXT REVIEW: Numbers 11:4-7

• The narration in this passage shows how the Children of Israel though free from slavery were still holding on their past life in the land of slavery.

• It further tells how they wept and murmured about the variety of food they are in Egypt which were missing in the wilderness. It states that:

1. The mixed multitude listed and the children................. v4.

LESSON OUTLINES
1. PAST IS PAST
2. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

PAST IS PAST

The teacher should ask the class to discuss with dealing with past event or occurrences to prevent them from affecting the present or future.
The teacher should use the point below as a guide for the discussion on some of the ways to deal with past events:

• Be intentional to let go of the ugly past because some bad memories always want to fill our thoughts (Philippians 4:8). Also, do not bask perpetually in the euphoria of the past.

• Learn from the mistakes of the past to avoid repetition of the same (John 8:10-11).

• Forgive yourself and others for whatever happened in the past (Genesis 50:15- 21). Remove the"veil of offense" and never allow it to degenerate into an obstacle (Ephesians 4:31; Hebrews 12:15).

• Accelerate your forward movement by thinking and taking the next step into a brighter tomorrow (2 Samuel 12:18-23).

• Forget 'yesterday because it is gone. Stop holding on to the past or referring to it incessantly as if you can bring back hand of the clock (Philippians 3:13).

• Free your mind because a negative past enslaves (Galatians 5:1; Genesis 33:1-3, 8).

• Cry to God to take any unwanted memory away. Remember that vengeance is of the Lord: leave the matter to Him (Romans 12:19).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1
The class should share their experience on the consequence of holding on to the past and how the achieved freedom.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

The teacher should ask the class what they need to do to achieve a bright future.
The teacher should use the following point as a guide for the discussion on things to note to achieve a bright future:

• Believers must walk with the assurance that tomorrow will be better (Job 14:7-9).

• Hope is a prerequisite needed to forget the past and look forward to the future (Job 11:18; 14:14; Romans 5:5).

• Having a focus will sustain a believer to keep moving (Philippians 3:13-14).

• Give yourself to the study of God's word (Psalm 119:15-1 6)

• Know that God is your help (Psalm 46:1-5); this gives uncommon happiness and joy (Psalm 146:5).

• Carve the future by channelling all your energy to positive endeavours to fulfil your purpose in life (Judges 11:1-5).

• No matter what, win your future (Proverbs 23:18).

TOPIC: THE RESURRECTION POWER IS STILL AVAILABLE

Speaker: Pst Mrs Olive Etubi
Text: Matt. 28:1-10

Jesus' death and resurrection opens the possibility of eternal life with God for all people. Death is not something to be feared. It is a gateway into a new and richer life. This is a comfort to Christians facing death or grieving the death of loved ones. They believe separation is not final. Those who have died are with God.

Through resurrection, we believe life has triumphed over death, good over evil, hope over despair. The resurrection is a sign of God's great power. Nothing is too great for God to achieve, and this is comforting and encouraging for Christians in difficulty.

We believe that when they are baptised they share in the resurrection of Jesus and so are brought into a new relationship with God. They show this in their actions by being kind and loving.

Hallelujah Christ arose and no gate of hell will prevail against us, Amen 🙏

Message summary
Naaman was a great man in Syria but he was a l***r.
A young maid made him understand that there is a chance for healing of his disease if only he believes and seeks to meet the prophet of God in Samaria.
He adhered to the word of the maid and wrote a letter to the king of Israel but the king was devastated.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and exclaimed, "How can the king of Syria expect me to cure this man? Does he think that I am God, with the power of life and death?"

Then Elisha heard what happened and sent a message to Naaman, he told him to go wash himself in river Jordan seven times but Naaman was angry as to why would he go to such place as big and might as he was, he was convinced to give it a try so long as the word came from the man of God.
So he did as he was told and was healed to his greatest surprise and to the glory of God.

Conclusion
Turn to God and await the result. Seek him in all things.

Text: 2King 5:1-14

2 Kings 5:1-14 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a l***r.
And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife.
And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.
And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel.
And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.
And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy.
And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.
And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.
But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I tho
