DIVINE MERCY FOR THE WORLD

O GREATLY MERCIFUL GOD, Infinite Goodness, today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to Your mercy - to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out. Gracious God, do not reject the prayer of this earth's exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding, Who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to You. O LORD JESUS CHRIST, You inspired SAINT FAUSTINA with profound veneration for Your boundless Mercy. Grant me through her intercession, if it be Your holy will, the grace …for which I fervently pray. SAINT MARIA FAUSTINA KOWALSKA Apostle of Divine Mercy

Named Helena at birth, this ardent promoter of the “Divine Mercy” devotion worked as a domestic since the age of fourteen in order to help her parents until, in 1925, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy at Warsaw. Here, amidst the humble setting of the simple daily chores Jesus, in a vision in 1931, made her his secretary, confidant and messenger, instructing her to paint an image of his according to the profile she saw. She was blessed with other innumerable and extensive mystical experiences which she put down in her “Diary” at the behest of her spiritual director and of Jesus himself.

She took the name Maria Faustina at her veiling in the Novitiate in 1926 and made her final profession in 1933. In 1934, she visited the artist, E. Kazimirowski, in connection with the proposed painting.

Despite ill-health and humiliation, she was ever obedient to the dictates of conscience, superior and Lord. Suffering in silence, she prayed fervently for priests, for the Church and her needs, and for the world at large. The Lord for his part made his satisfaction known to her thus: “My child, you are my delight. You are the comfort of my heart. I grant you as many graces as you can hold. As often as you want to make me happy, speak to the world about my great and unfathomable mercy.”

Sr Maria Faustina Kowalska was canonized by her compatriot, Pope Saint John Paul II, in the Jubilee Year, 2000.

A Reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians

Brothers and sisters:
I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by the grace of Christ for a different gospel (not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the Gospel of Christ.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel other than the one that we preached to you,
let that one be accursed! As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one that you received, let that one be accursed!

Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.

Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the Gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly;
do this and you will live.”

But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus,
“And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.
A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and w**e over his wounds and bandaged them. WHY IS MARY MAGDALENE CALLED THE “APOSTLE OF THE APOSTLES”?

Have you ever wondered why Mary Magdalene is sometimes called the “Apostle of the Apostles”? She was not one of the Twelve Apostles, yet after the Resurrection, Jesus entrusted her with a message that she was to take directly to them. So why did the Church give her such a remarkable title?

1. JESUS CHOSE MARY MAGDALENE AS A WITNESS TO THE RESURRECTION.
On Easter morning, Mary Magdalene was among the first to discover that Jesus' tomb was empty. But she did not stop there.
The risen Christ appeared to her.
John's Gospel tells us that Mary initially did not recognize Jesus. But when He called her by name, “Mary,” she recognized Him (John 20:16).
This makes her the first recorded person in John's Gospel to encounter the risen Christ.

2. JESUS GAVE HER A MISSION.
After revealing Himself to Mary, Jesus told her:
“Go to my brothers and tell them…” - John 20:17.
Think about what just happened.
Jesus had risen from the dead, and He chose Mary to become the messenger who would announce His Resurrection to His disciples.
Mary therefore went to the disciples and proclaimed:
“I have seen the Lord.” - John 20:18.
She was not merely a woman who happened to witness something extraordinary.
She was entrusted with a mission.

3. THAT IS WHY SHE IS CALLED “APOSTLE OF THE APOSTLES”
The title “Apostle of the Apostles” does not mean Mary Magdalene was one of the Twelve Apostles or that she held the same apostolic office as Peter and the other Twelve.
Rather, it refers to the fact that she was sent by Christ to announce the Resurrection to the apostles.
The word apostle comes from the Greek apostolos, meaning “one who is sent.”
Mary was sent to those who would become the principal witnesses of the Resurrection.
In this sense, she became the messenger sent to the messengers.

4. THE CHURCH HAS LONG HONOURED HER UNIQUE ROLE.
This title is not simply a modern Catholic invention.
Saint Thomas Aquinas famously referred to Mary Magdalene as “the apostle of the apostles” because she was sent to announce the Resurrection to the apostles.
And in 2016, Pope Francis elevated the liturgical celebration of Saint Mary Magdalene to the rank of a Feast, emphasizing her important role as the first witness and evangelizer of the Resurrection.
The Church therefore recognizes something extraordinary in her mission.
She was the first witness of the risen Christ and the first to proclaim that encounter to the apostles.

5. MARY'S STORY SHOWS THAT CHRIST CAN ENTRUST GREAT MISSIONS TO THE UNEXPECTED.
There is something deeply beautiful about this.
In the society of Jesus' time, the testimony of women was often not given the same social weight as that of men.
Yet Jesus chose Mary Magdalene to be among the first witnesses of His Resurrection and entrusted her with the responsibility of telling His disciples.
The Resurrection message therefore first came through a woman who could simply say:
“I have seen the Lord.”
Mary's importance was not that she replaced Peter or the apostles.
It was that Christ Himself chose her to bring the first announcement of the Resurrection to them.

In simple words, Why is Mary Magdalene called the “Apostle of the Apostles”?
Because after the Resurrection, Jesus sent her to announce His Resurrection to His disciples.
She was not one of the Twelve.
She did not receive the same apostolic office as Peter.
But she was sent by the risen Christ to the apostles, making her, in a beautiful sense, the “apostle of the apostles.”
Her message was remarkably simple:
“I have seen the Lord.”
And that message changed everything.
The disciples who had witnessed Jesus' death now had the first announcement that He was alive.
Mary Magdalene therefore occupies a unique place in the story of Easter.
She came to the tomb looking for the dead Jesus.
She left having encountered the living Christ.
And the first thing Jesus asked her to do was not to keep the news to herself.
He sent her to tell others.
That is what makes her story so powerful: an encounter with the risen Christ became a mission.
