Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you - James 1:27 NLT

The above scripture spurred CAN Edo State Chapter and its action sparked a remarkable cacophony of joyous memories and gladness among the occupants at the International Christian Centre, Uhogua, Benin City (IDP Camp), Edo State during the visit of the foremost Christian body in Nigeria.

The visit of CAN, Edo State on Wednesday, 21 January 2026 to the IDP Camp was greeted with visible joy as hope was lifted and restored amongst the children and adults. The total of 100 bags of 50kg rice was donated and delivered by CAN Edo State Chapter under the leadership of the Edo State CAN Chairman, His Eminence, Apostle General Dr I. U. Omoike.

This is one of the numerous ways through which the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) continues to contribute to the overall welfare of the Nigerian society and it is a clear way of demonstrating the love of God to those who are in the IDP Camp and other persons in diverse circumstances of discomfort.

The biggest gift from God Almighty to mankind is the giving of the Saviour of the World, Jesus Christ for the redemption of humanity.

Jesus came as the Lamb of God and this is the backbone and hope of all believers. As the Christmas season beckons, we at Christian Association of Nigeria, Edo State commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the ONLY SAVIOUR of the world.

We equally seize the opportunity to thank God for His goodness and faithfulness all through the year amidst the several challenges thus far.

2025 EASTER MESSAGE OF APOSTLE GENERAL DR IREKPONO OMOIKE, CAN CHAIRMAN, EDO STATE:

EDO STATE CHAIRMAN OF CAN, CALLS FOR CHRISTIAN VALUES AND FERVENT PRAYERS TO SURMOUNT CHALLENGES IN THE COUNTRY.

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Edo State, Apostle General, Dr Irekpono Omoike has called on Christians and citizens to use the Easter season to imbibe the Christ-like values of love, humility, godliness and servant leadership to heal the country and promote a just and egalitarian society.

Apostle General Dr Omoike in a statement to the Christian
community in Edo State (during the Easter celebration), reminded them of the kindness, love, piety perseverance, resilience and huge sacrifice offered by Jesus Christ to salvage mankind from the bo***ge of sin.

He said that Easter celebration is not just for merry making but a moment for sober reflection on the life, teachings, and values of Jesus Christ while on earth. He recounted that Jesus Christ went through trials, tribulations, and denials to ensure the redemption of mankind. We must all love God and love one another in return.

The Edo State Chairman of CAN, commended Christians for the successful completion of the Lenten season which offered them opportunities for fasting, praying, giving to the needy, repentance, pursuit of holiness, turning from evil, and turning to God.

Apostle General Dr Omoike emphasized that the lessons learnt from the Lenten season should be translated into building a peaceful, just, orderly, and equitable society where no one is oppressed.

The Edo State Chairman of CAN denounced the rising spate of violence, insecurity, injustice, lack of concern for human lives, and suffering in the country; he urged governments and all concerned to do more to protect human lives, property and ensure safety, security, justice, equity and gainful employments especially for the youths.

Apostle General Dr Omoike wishes Christians a hitche-free Easter celebration and reinstated the commitment of CAN under his watch to foster unity, peaceful co-existence, love, and oneness amongst the various religious bodies in the State.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Edo State Branch, under the leadership of Apostle General Dr I. U. Omoike, in its commitment, contribution and dedication to the development, peace and welfare of Edo State and all its residents embarked on and organized an interactive session with the front line contenders and candidates of various political parties in the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election scheduled for 21 September 2024.

In the bit to have a successful outing, CAN set up a Think-Tank charged with task of organising the event. In no particular order, the committee was made up of the following eminent personalities: Dr Oriakhi Davies, (Chairman), Comrade Osahon Obasuyi, Apostle Mark Ovie, Rev Musa Bello, Barr Ofie Imun, Rev Humphrey Arhwghan, Rev Phil Arojie, Dr Ifeanyi Egbuniwe, Dr Hanatu, Prince Iyare, Prof Julius Iyasele, Sir Best Humphrey Iriabe and Mr Majemite.

It was a rich time for serious questioning availing the candidates the opportunity to speak to the church in Edo State through the umbrella of CAN on their intentions, plans and strategies for Edo State and answer questions bordering on their capacity, acumen and readiness to govern Edo State. The gubernatorial aspirants, Dr Azemhe Azena of NNPP, Senator Monday Okpebholo of APC, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, Esq. of Labour Party and Dr Asue Ighodalo of PDP took their turns on 15, 16, 17 and 23 July 2024 respectively.

The CAN chairman seized the opportunity to reiterate before the gubernatorial candidates that Edo State is the only State in the South South region without a befitting ecumenical centre and secretariat of CAN as well as a properly constituted Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board. He also stressed the need for a peaceful, credible, free and fair election devoid of rancour that will produce the next occupant of Dennis Osadebey Avenue.

The event was attended by the executive officers of CAN at the State level and the officers had picture sessions with all the candidates as prayers were offered for the protection of the candidates in their aspirations throughout the electioneering period.

The Executive Council of the Edo State Chapter of CAN played host to the gubernatorial candidate of PDP, Dr Asue Ighodalo in the forthcoming election at its secretariat on Tuesday, 9 July 2024.

The PDP flag bearer who came to meet the non partisan Christian body was received alongside his brother, Pastor Itua Ighodalo, Rev Osagie Erhunmwunse and a few others.

In his speech, Dr Asue Ighodalo requested for the support of CAN particularly in the area of prayers as he pursues his political aspirations. He remarked that his interest is to contribute to the welfare of Edo State through his well of experience garnered over the years in the private sector. He pointedly mentioned that he intends to govern Edo State with love and compassion alongside his experience which are lacking in governance in Nigeria and would bring policies that would make Edo State self reliant economically while tapping the abundant human and natural resources in the state as well as assiduously work towards reducing infant/maternal mortality rate.

While reacting on behalf of CAN, the chairman, Apostle General Dr I. U. Omoike assured him that the CAN will always pray for all and any Edo Guber candidate as the Christian body is mandated to be a praying organization for the overall interest of Edo State. The Chairman pointed out some things that have eluded CAN in Edo State including an ecumenical center, state pilgrim board among others, to which the PDP flag bearer promised to bring to reality if he emerges the governor.

The visit was concluded with a prayer and picture sessions.

Update on the Christian Feeding Programme of Edo State Government in Conjunction with The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Edo State

The CAN Chairman, Apostle General Dr Irekpono Omoike, who is also the chairman of the committee set up by the Edo State Government and entrusted with the enviable responsibility in the Christian Feeding Programme has reiterated his commitment to transparency and openness while carrying everyone along in distribution of the food items for the relief of the downtrodden in the society in Edo State in line with the poverty map released by the government.

While speaking to the Head of Legal and Public Affairs of CAN, Edo State, the CAN Chairman noted with concern that some complaints have reached his table especially from CCN bloc over perceived lack of equitable spread and even representation of the members of the various blocs in some local government areas. He however assured that some practical lessons have been learnt in this pilot phase and better strategies would be adopted in subsequent phases to avoid any further complaints.

The CAN Chairman also urged all affected persons to liaise with their various bloc leaders to ensure that they are well captured in the compiled list submitted to CAN, which is used for the distribution.

In a related note, the Chairman clarified that he did not on behalf of CAN endorse any gubernatorial candidate of any party at any point and any such rumours are acts of mischief makers. He correctly said that he featured as an invited guest at an event of PFN, a bloc of CAN and merely said prayers as a father of faith. This obviously cannot in any way translate to endorsement.

It is hereby stated that CAN particularly in Edo State is non partisan and would not endorse any gubernatorial candidate but will consistently engage prayers for the good and development of Edo State while urging all Edo residents to cast their votes in line with their conscience without fear or favour.

Peter Chukwu Ogbu, Esq.
