WORD FOCUS: EXTENDING MERCY
TEXT: LUKE 12:48 "For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more...."

Romans 3:23 reminds us that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s expectations. We have compiled a long list of transgressions, proven ourselves incapable of living up to the glorious plans He has for us. In His mercy, God sent Jesus to save us. His Blood washed away our sins, and He adopted us as His own children.

Jesus told of a master who wished to settle his accounts. He summoned a slave who owed billions of dollars. His master commanded that his family and everything he owned be sold to pay the debt. When the servant fell down and begged for mercy, he released him and forgave the debt.

Afterwards, the servant found a fellow servant who owed him a small sum of money. He grabbed him by the throat, demanded payment, and threw him into debtors’ prison. When this news reached his master, he turned the ungrateful servant over to the tormentors until his debt was repaid.

Mercy and forgiveness are wonderful to receive but can be difficult to extend to another. Remember the great debt of sin that Jesus has forgiven you, and be quick to extend mercy to the one who offends. Much has been given, and much will be required. Be generously forgiving, and it will come back to you in the same measure. May it be pressed down, shaken together, and running over!

WORD FOCUS: LOVING LIKE JESUS
TEXT : LUKE 6:32 "But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them...."

Most churches would have welcomed the Pharisees. After all, they tithed up to 30% of their income, knew the Scriptures backwards and forwards, fasted twice a week, and were very religious. They were also mean-spirited, stingy, and self-righteous. They twisted the Scriptures, tested and questioned Jesus. They prayed loudly in the streets, so others would be impressed with their piety. They moped pitifully when they fasted, so people would admire their self-deprivation and discipline.
Jesus saw through their religious facade, and they hated Him for it. However, Jesus said that even the Pharisees deceptive hypocrites that they were loved by those who loved them. And He challenges us today: if we only love those who are kindly disposed towards us, what credit is that to us?

The true test of love is when we are the first to forgive, when we seek to be reconciled to an enemy, when we do good to those that deceive and use us, when we lend to the needy with no expectation of return, when we treat others the way we wish to be treated. Jesus promises a wonderful reward when we act like our generous Father Who shows us how to be kind to the ungrateful and wicked (Luke 6:35). Jesus paid the price for you to be forgiven. May the Holy Spirit fill you with His power to forgive others. May your relationships be restored in the mighty name of Jesus.

WORD FOCUS: REDEMPTION AND A NEW BEGINNING
TEXT: MARK 16:7 "But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you...."

Who would roll away the large stone to allow them access into the grave? Very early in the morning, a group of women made their way to Jesus’ tomb. Shocked, they found the stone rolled away. An angel instructed them to tell the disciples and Peter that Jesus would meet them in Galilee just as He had promised (Mark 16).Why did the angel specifically mention Peter’s name? Impetuous Peter always running off at the mouth and making grandiose promises. After all, didn’t he fervently avow that, even if everyone else rejected Jesus, he would never disown Him? (Matthew 26:35).
Yet, a few short hours later, he denied even knowing the One he had promised to defend to the death three times. Big promises, little performance.

But the angel mentioned Peter by name. Be certain that the one whose confidence was crushed, whose shame ran deep, whose self-recrimination threatened to overwhelm be sure to let him know that Jesus wants to see him again. No matter how you might have denied Jesus, His love will restore your shattered heart, His forgiveness will wash away all shame, and He longs to meet with you again. His arms are open, and He calls you by name. His forgiveness promises a new beginning. He is faithful to forgive every sin and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus!

WORD FOCUS: OUR BIGGEST FAILURE CAN PRODUCE GREATEST SUCCESS
TEXT: LUKE 22:32 “When you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.....”

When you’re in the middle of a failure, it can seem like nothing good will ever come from it. But God can always bring good from your failures. In fact, your worst failure can become your greatest success. If you let him, God will use your failures to build his church! Jesus told Peter “When you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers” Before Peter had even failed, Jesus gave him a vision of how God could use his failure for good.
After Peter’s failure (when he denied Jesus three times), Jesus died and then was resurrected. And when He and Peter met again on a seashore, Jesus pointed him to the good God would bring out of his failure. Here’s how the conversation went:
“Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’ Again Jesus said, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep.’ The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep’” (John 21:15-17 NIV).

Three times Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” Why did he ask that three times? He was giving Peter the opportunity to make up for the three times he had denied Jesus.
And each time, Jesus gave Peter another way he could use his failure for good: “Feed my lambs. . . . Take care of my sheep. . . . Feed my sheep.”

On the same night that Peter had denied Jesus, another disciple, Judas, also failed Jesus. But, ultimately, Judas became a traitor to Jesus, while Peter chose to become a teacher and a leader. In Matthew 16:18 Jesus says, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”.

God is still building his church by using people who’ve failed. In fact, God only uses failed people because there aren’t any perfect people! What are you going to become in light of your failure? It’s your choice.

DAILY BREAD OF LIFE.....
SATURDAY 22ND AUGUST 2026

TOPIC: WHAT MERCY LOOKS LIKE IN TODAY’S WORLD
TEXT: Colossians 4:6 "When you talk, you should always be kind and pleasant so you will be able to answer everyone in the way you should.....”

One of the best ways to be a witness for Jesus in a world that’s becoming more judgmental, selfish, and unforgiving is to show mercy to others. Yesterday we looked at two things you can do to build a lifestyle of mercy: Watch and listen for the needs of others, and don’t be offended by the sins of others. Here are two more ways to show mercy: Choose your words carefully. If you’re going to show mercy, there are some things you just can’t say. You can’t be rude or sarcastic. Mercy puts a filter on your mouth and helps you choose words that build people up instead of tearing them down. Maybe you grew up in a family where it was common to put each other down, and now you’ve developed the same pattern in your own life. How do you break that habit? Ask God for wisdom because “the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy” (James 3:17).

The wiser you become, the more merciful you’ll be to the people around you no matter how much they disagree with you or dislike you. That’s because the more you understand the hurts of other people, the more likely you are to cut them slack and show them mercy. Value people’s salvation over keeping rules. Jesus modeled this over and over. A good example is found in the book of Matthew. Jesus says this to the legalistic Pharisees: “You are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things” (Matthew 23:23). Jesus didn’t like how the Pharisees prioritized tithing over more important things, such as treating people fairly, showing mercy, and having faith. He wants us to “not neglect the more important things” too. He would rather see our kindness break through to others so that, one day, they will give their lives to him. Jesus is more interested in kingdom building than in rule following. Every time you show mercy, it’s your greatest Christian witness to the world
