After Jesus Christ ascended to heaven, nearly all of his disciples were assassinated.
The majority of the disciples died in agonizing deaths, with only one disciple escaping death.
Peter was crucified upside down, Andrew on a transverse cross, Thomas was pierced with a spear, Mathias was stoned and beheaded, Luke was hung on an olive tree, Simon was crucified, James was beaten until his brain was dashed out, Bartholomew was beheaded, Phillip was crucified, Mark was dragged to pieces by a horse, Jude was crucified, Matthew was slammed with a halber.
John the Divine was the only apostle to miraculously avoid martyrdom.
James, one of the Twelve Apostles, was his younger brother. The Church Fathers refer to him as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder, and the Beloved Disciple, and claim that he outlived the other apostles and was the only one to die of natural causes.
Tertullian claims that after being thrown into boiling oil in Rome and suffering no harm, John was deported (probably to Patmos).
The Roman emperor Domitian is reported to have ordered the apostle John to be boiled to death in oil, but John only continued to preach from inside the pot. John was compelled to drink poison at another time, but it did not harm him, as predicted in Mark 16: 18.
As a result, John, the head of the Ephesus church at the time, was exiled to Patmos.
Some historians and researchers believe John died on Patmos, while others believe he was released from the island before he died. Although no one knows when or where he died, many believe he was not executed like the other apostles.
