REACH OUT TO OTHERS IN LOVE
Today, the Church in Nigeria celebrates St Therese of the Child Jesus, also known as Little Flower because of her doing little things with great love. In her autobiography, she makes a statement: ‘’In the heart of the Church, I will be love.’’ Her search for a vocation led her to the closing verses of I Corinthians 12 and the whole I Corinthians 13.

In the Gospel reading, the Lord Jesus gives us the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Here, Our Divine Lord teaches that our love should know no bounds. Every human person irrespective of creed, colour, s*x, status is deserving of our love. Love should at all times, colour the lives of believers in Christ. The Lord Jesus showed this by the example of His life: ‘’Greater love no man has than this, that a man lays down his life for his friends’’ (John 15:13).

In the first reading, the Apostle is not happy with the Galatians for leaving the faith he had taught them. Their love for Jesus was on the decline. It should not be so with us.

BE FAITHFUL MESSENGERS OF GOD
Today, we celebrate Ss Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Scripture records them among the Angels who constantly stand before God’s face. They go for very important errands for God. They are, as the name Archangel implies, the chief messengers of God. They are known to have been faithful in carrying out their assignments.

The name Michael means ‘’who is like God.’’ In the book of Revelation, he is mentioned as the one who led the angels loyal to God in the fight against the dragon (Rev 12:7-12a). This is the battle believed to have thrown the evil One out of the divine presence in Heaven. We can rely on him to help us in our spiritual battles.

The name Gabriel means ‘’the Power of God’’. He is mentioned in the book of Daniel (Chapter 8) as foretelling the fall of the Persian Empire to Alexander the Great. He is mentioned in Luke’s Gospel (Chapter 1), as bringing the news of the birth of John the Baptist and announced to Mary that she would conceive the Son of God.

Raphael means ‘’God heals’’. He is mentioned in the book of Tobit (Chapters 5-13) as healing the blindness of Tobit and guiding young Tobias in his journey.

They are all faithful messengers of God. As Christians, we are all messengers of God. We need to remain faithful as they are.

WE OWE GOD OBEDIENCE
We continue our reading of the book of Job. In today’s reading, Job talks about the supremacy of God: ‘’How can a man be just before God? We owe our lives to Him. He governs everything in the world in which we work and live according to His terms and not our own. Like the psalmist, we have to turn to Him in prayer: ‘’Let my prayer come into your presence, O Lord.’’ Prayer is indispensable for a proper relationship with God. It will enable us to walk and work according to His dictates. The Apostle Paul said: ‘’I count everything as refuse in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him’’ (Philippians 3:8-9a).

The Gospel reading tells us about would –be disciples of Jesus. They wanted to follow Christ according to their own terms and not His. As a result, they could not become His disciples.

In some countries, Christianity is fast losing its grasp on the people. We must stem the tide of this decline by listening more to God than to the world.

EXPECT DIFFICULT TIMES
In our first reading, Job regrets the day of his birth. He wished he was never born. Life is made up of ups and downs. Life is a circle that rotates. It may rotate and we find ourselves in an area that is not so pleasant as in the case of Job. As believers in God, we are not to give up on God in such situations but keep on looking up to Him for possible solutions. Job, despite his complaints did not give up on God. In the depths of his being, he turned to God in prayer.

The first stanza of the psalm, infact, the whole psalm is a prayer to God in times of trouble: ‘’O Lord and God of my salvation , I cry before You day and night, Let my prayer come into Your presence, incline your ear to my cry’’

In the Gospel reading, the Lord Jesus is not welcomed by the Samaritans. James and John asked if they could be allowed to call down fire on them. Jesus rebuked them and went in another direction. Focused on God, these setbacks did not deter His mission.

Today, we celebrate St. Vincent de Paul. He was known for the attention he gave to the poor and the formation of the clergy. His prayer life enabled him to do all this.

ALWAYS BE MINDFUL OF THE POOR
The readings of today’s celebration call on us to be mindful of the poor. In the first reading, the prophet Amos comes down strongly on the rich. They were comfortable living lives of ease but they were not mindful of the poor in their midst: ‘’… they anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph…’’

But the responsorial psalm tells us that God is mindful of the poor. He is their friend: ‘’does justice to those who are oppressed, gives bread to the hungry, sets prisoners free, opens the eyes of the blind, raises those who are bowed down, loves the just, upholds the orphan and the widow, protects the stranger…’’

The Gospel reading continues along the same line. The poor man who is neglected by the rich man has a name, Lazarus. But the rich man in all his affluence has no name. At the end of life’s journey, the poor man is admitted into the presence of God while the rich man is not.

In the second reading, the young Bishop Timothy is urged to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ…’’ This was a call for him to be mindful of the poor and to distance himself from ‘’the lust for wealth as the cause of all evil.’’

SERVE THE LORD AT ALL TIMES
We come to the end of our reading of the book of Ecclesiastes. The author strongly advises that we serve God well while we are young. The days of old age will come when we will be required to give account of our stewardship: ‘’Remember your Creator in the day of youth before evil days come…’’Serving the Lord is not limited to youthful age. It is an all-time affair.

In the Gospel reading, the Lord Jesus continues to talk about His imminent Passion. His audience had to come terms with the fact of a suffering Messiah. For then it was unthinkable but that is the means God chose for human salvation.

In our service of God, we have to come to terms the fact of suffering in human life. We have so much of it in our present world-wars, banditry, kidnapping, terrorists, economic issues and many others. Some lose faith as a result. But we do not have to for God has been our refuge from one generation to the next. We need to constantly pray for the favour of the Lord to be upon us and gives us success in our endeavours.

USE YOUR TIME WISELY
We are born in time. We live and work in time. We die in time. For the worldly-minded, time is money, money, power, fame, property or something else. For the believer in God, time is eternity. The goal of the believer is to live with God in eternity, the reason of being created. God’s gift of time is to be appreciated and used to glorify God. Gifts are always treasured and used well.

Our Lord Jesus Christ sets the pace for the Christians use of time. Though eternal, the Lord Jesus was born when the fullness of time had come (Gal 4:4). At the appropriate time, He started His mission, having plied the carpenter’s trade. In today’s Gospel, almost at the end of His mission to redeem the world, He told His disciples: ‘’The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and on the third be raised’’

Baptism made us part of the redemptive work of Christ. A wise use of time on our part would be to bring in many persons to know Jesus and all He stood for.

LET GOD ALWAYS BE YOUR FOCUS
Experience shows that earthly activities and things are short-lived no matter how much we prize them at any given time. We start our reading of the Book of Ecclesiastes which tells us of the vanity of earthly achievements devoid of God. God has to always be our focus. The Lord Jesus tells us that we should seek first the kingdom of God and all other things will be given to us (Matthew 6:33).

The psalm is a call on us to see how short-lived we are. We are dust and to dust we shall return. We are reminded of this fact on Ash Wednesday at the start of the Lenten Season. It will do us a lot of good if we constantly call to mind what God has done and continues to do for us: ‘’O Lord, you have been our refuge from generation to generation.’’ All we are and all we have are gifts from God.

The Gospel reading tells us about Herod being perplexed and wanting to see Jesus. He was a man who had not made God his focus and who was neck-deep in earthly concerns.
