*📖📖 DAILY DEVOTIONAL.*

*DATE: THURSDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER, 2020.*

*TOPIC: BECOMING AN EXEMPLARY LEADER (1).*

*MEMORIZE:*
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. Genesis 11:3

*BIBLE READING:* GENESIS 11:1-4

1. And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.

4. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

*MESSAGE:*
“Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly… Genesis 11:3”

Naturally, humans search for leaders and role models.

For example, anyone who wants to become a great footballer would begin to study whoever is the greatest in the sport at that point in time.

He would find out his diet, where and how long he practices and all there is to know about the fellow.

Unfortunately, few people have exemplary leadership qualities today. You can’t do things the usual way and expect people to follow.
Innovate; you have to go beyond the ordinary to be called extraordinary.

No aspiring footballer will make a role model out of a striker who only scores goals occasionally.

However, the one who scores hat tricks regularly will be a leader to many. You must show results that are far greater than the norm.

ln Genesis 11:3, the leaders of these people were innovators. Who obey everyone else used stones to build, they decided to make bricks.

While everyone else used mortar, they used slime.
The leaders in this story asked the people to take up a seemingly impossible task of building a tower that would reach heaven, yet no one argued.

They trusted that if these leaders could come up with innovations like bricks and slime, they could lead them to achieve their aim.

So for the followers, it was not a question of whether the goal was achievable or not.
They thought! must be part of this great feat.

You shouldn’t plead for loyalty. People aren’t following because they cannot see anything special about your leadership.

Some are even doubting if you can really achieve your goals.

To be a leader, always think outside the box. Don’t think in terms of limitations, think in terms of solutions.

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you new ideas that can bring about major improvements and innovations.

ACTION POINT:
You want to be an exemplary leader?. Go beyond the ordinary always.

BIBLE READING IN ONE YEAR: EZRA 1-3

HYMN 30: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

1. When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way,
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

CHORUS
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away,
Not a doubt or a fear,
Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay,
Not a grief nor a loss,
Not a frown nor a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove
The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay,
For the favour He shows,
And the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way,
What He says we will do,
Where He sends, we will go,
Never fear, only trust and obey.

BE BLESSED 🙏

*SUNDAY DEVOTIONAL*

🎤 BISHOP SAMUEL UHUNMWANGHO

AUGUST 2, 2020

TOPIC: *QUALITIES OF A MINISTER*

_CENTRAL THOUGHT: The appointment of leaders in the church must be carried out strictly under divine guidance._

_HYHN: SS& S 680 “Stand up! Stand up for Jesus”_

*TEXT: TITUS 1: 1-16*

*INTRODUCTION:*
Titus was a Greek believer who was nurtured by Paul, and became one of his trusted partners and companion in ministry during his missionary journeys. He experienced many of the travails of this apostle, and was also conversant with many of the churches established by Paul.

Apostle Paul knew his human limitations, and as such was willing to delegate some of his responsibilities to trusted co-labourers. On a visit to the churches in the province of Crete, he probably met with more challenges than he envisaged. On his departure, he leaf Bro Titus behind with definite instructions on how to attend to the challenges.

The Epistle of Paul to Titus was a follow-up on this assignment, and an apostolic directive on further steps he should take in addressing the challenges of the churches. The central one, which forms the focus of this study, is to appoint Presbyters or Elders in each church. The qualities of such leaders constitute the subject of this lesson.

*LESSON OBJECTIVES:*
This lesson is intended to:
1. explain Paul's motives for writing to Titus;

2. discuss the qualities of a Christian Minister or Leader;

3. identify some specific instructions Paul gave to Titus;

4. list some basic truths emphasized by Paul; and

5. discuss how to ascertain the truth about those who claim to know God.

*Q1a. EXPLAIN PAUL'S 1 MOTIVES FOR WRITING TO TITUS? (TITUS 1: 1-5)*
Paul's motives for writing to Titus was borne out of zeal, fervour and concern for the work of the ministry in the province of Crete. It was a necessary follow-up which serves as a reminder of an earlier mandate. Titus was left in Crete to set up divine ordinance for the good of the churches. This letter was to expound on this assignment by providing clearer and well documented guidelines for the task. It was a demonstration of apostolic diligence, faithfulness and prudence towards seeds planted.

*Q1b. LIST SOME BASIC TRUTHS EMPHASISED BY PAUL (TITUS 1: 1-4)*
From the passage we are taught that:

I. Eternal life is a sure promise from God to all who will have faith in Christ and will stand firm to the end.

II. Faith in Christ must produce a conduct rooted in godliness and good works.

IIl. It is impossible for God to lie. He cannot deny His word or Himself, and He cannot entice anybody with sin.

*Q2. WHAT ARE THE SCRIPTURAL QUALITIES OF AN ELDER? (TITUS :6-9) *
The word 'Elder' as used in the cited passage can also be rendered as Bishop or Presbyter or Overseer or Pastor. It refers to anyone who is ordained to oversee a particular church or colabourer with the leader in such duty. It is a high calling with enormous responsibilities, and grave implications. Such a leader must be blameless, married to one wife, having faithful children brought up in Christian faith and who lead exemplary public lives. He is not self-willed, not soon angry or ill-tempered, has self control, not addicted to wine and not engrossed in monetary gain or materialism. He is a lover of hospitality, good people and good things. He is sober (or prudent), just, hol y and temperate.

A leader must hold fast the word of God by accepting it, believing it, practicing it and teaching it to others.

These qualities are for all ages and generations of believers. They are available to us to serve the purpose of self-assessment on a continuous basis, and guidance to those who have the responsibility to ordain leaders in the church.

*'Q3a. WHAT WERE PAUL'S WARNINGS TO TITUS?*
Paul's warning was that Titus should watch out for strange leaders -deceivers, false prophets, false teachers and vain -talkers. Their motive is monetary or material gain and self-indulgence. They are unruly, power-hungry and labour much to drag others into error. They mingle Bible doctrines with fables and traditions of men. They are pretentious, disobedient and abominable.

These strange leaders are very dangerous to the church. They operate from the inside and may have unrestrained access to the gullible. They subvert the salvation and faith of young converts through wrong doctrines. They oppose genuine leadership and hinder the work of grace. They defraud and deceive the unsuspected and urge them on the path of damnation. They, devour homes, promote rebellion and ensure spiritual barrenness in the Church.

*Q3b. HOW DO WE HANDLE FALSE TEACHERS AND THEIR TEACHINGS? TITUS 1:13*
Identifying a false teacher and his false teaching is the prerogative of strategic leadership. Curtailing such through timely actions is the proof of a leadership sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Measures to tackle false teaching include:

(a) Private Counsel and warnings.

(b) Sharp public rebuke so that others may take note and be wary.

(c) Continuous preaching and teaching of sound doctrine to the congregation.

(d) Stopping the mouth of the false teacher by withdrawing opportunities to minister, and thereby protecting the congregation from his errors.

(e) By prayer and supplication to God to make such messages ineffective.

*Q4. HOW DO WE IDENTIFY LEADERS WHO TRULY KNOW GOD? TITUS 1:16*
Leaders who truly know God are not difficult to identify. It is evident in the profession of their faith and lifestyle. Their motives are seen to be simple and pure. Their salvation is genuinely based on faith in Christ and what He did on the cross. While they operate under the influence of the Holy Spirit, their emotions and desires are fully moderated by the word of God. Their desire is to please God in all things and their method is what the Scriptures approve of. Their life is that of divine sacrifice, being careful to profess and practice the faith with a genuine Spirit.

On the other hand, those w ho do not truly know God are motivated by greed and are ready to corrupt the gospel to achieve that end. What they lack in spiritual endowment, they try to make up for through man-made ordinances and satanic patronage. They are agents of satan operating in disguise as ministers of God.

*DAILY LIVING APPLICATION*
There is code of conduct clearly spelt out for Christian leaders, in particular, and every other believer in Christ. The appointment of leaders in the Church is a divine instruction that must be carried out with a high sense of responsibility. This is because an error of appointment could be very difficult to undo and could pose extreme danger to souls. Many a time, such has turned out to be a 'thorn in the flesh' of the body of Christ and a footage of darkness in the House of God.

_*MEMORY VERSE:* TITUS 1:14_
_“Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men that turn from the truth”
