Today’s Rosary: The Sorrowful Mystery

-FIRST READING-
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans 1:16-25
“Although they knew God they did not honour him as God.”

Brethren: I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, “He who through faith is righteous shall live.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse; for although they knew God they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonouring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever! Amen.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM psalm 19:2-3.4-5 (R. 2a).
R/. The heavens declare the glory of God.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.
Day unto day conveys the message,
and night unto night imparts the knowledge. R/.

No speech, no word, whose voice goes unheeded;
their sound goes forth through all the earth,
their message to the utmost bounds of the world. R.

ALLELUIA Hebrews 4:12
Alleluia. The word of the Lord is living and active, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 11:37-41
“Give alms; and behold, everything is clean for you.”

At that time: While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and sat at table. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness. You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today’s Reflection
Jesus in today’s Gospel does not condemn ritual or external observances but insists that the heart of ritual is faith. The heart of the Church and of religious practices is also faith. If external observances is the end of our religion, than sin become as superficial as the righteousness that such a faith would seek. The heart of our sacramental life in the Church is faith. The Church survives and thrives by faith: your faith, our faith.

Personal Devotional
Reflection on St. Joseph Day 12

To prove the power which St. Joseph possesses in paradise, St. Bernardine of Siena writes thus: “we cannot doubt that Christ accords to St. Joseph, now that he is in heaven, even more perfectly the respect and reverence which he paid to him on earth. Our Lord, who on earth revered St. Joseph as his father, will certainly deny him nothing that he asks in heaven”. Let us then say to him with confidence:

Let Us Pray
St. Joseph, powerful protector of souls, keep us from all sin.

Sunday October 10, 2021
Twenty-Eighth Sunday of the Year
Vestment: Green
Today’s Rosary: Glorious Mystery
Catechetical Week Ends Today

Theme of the Sunday: GO, SELL ALL THAT YOU HAVE. In our life we are required to make many choices. Many things attract us, and we cannot have them all. To choose some things means that we have to renounce others. The readings of today are on this theme of “choice.” The first passage mentions the choice of Solomon. He preferred wisdom to the goods of this world. The gospel tells the story of the rich man; Jesus asks him to make a very committed and important choice: either follow him, giving up all his riches, or keep his goods and lose him. The second reading tells us that the word of God is like a double-edged sword that penetrates deeply and uncovers all that is hidden in the human being. This is the word that forces one to take radical decisions.

-FIRST READING-
“I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with wisdom.”
A reading from the Book of Wisdom 7:7-11

I prayed, and understanding was given me; I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to sceptres and thrones, and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her. Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem, because all gold is but a little sand in her sight, and silver will be accounted as clay before her. I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her radiance never ceases. All good things came to me along with her, and in her hands uncounted wealth.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 90: 12- 13.14-15. 16- l7 (R. cf. 14).
R/. Fill us with your merciful love, O Lord, and we shall exult.

Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Turn back, O Lord! How long?
Show pity to your servants. R.

At dawn, fill us with your merciful love;
we shall exult and rejoice all our days.
Give us joy for the days of our affliction,
for the years when we looked upon evil. R.

Let your deed be seen by your servants,
and your glorious power by their children.
Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us;
give success to the work of our hands.
O give success to the work of our hands. R.

-SECOND READING-
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews 4: 12-13
“The word of God discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ”

The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA Matthew 5:3
Alleluia. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
“Go, sell what you have, and come, follow me.”
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 10:17-30).

At that time: As Jesus was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour your father and mother.”’ And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.” And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.” '

Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the Gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
The poverty of the rich.

PRIEST: My brothers and sisters, nothing must come in the way of our following of Jesus Christ. Let us pray to the Lord, therefore, for a clearer understanding of the problem of wealth.

READER:
FOR THE LEADERS OF THE CHURCH, (pause) that they may always value the poor in spirit who follow the example of Christ himself, who became poor for our sake so that we could become rich in God’s love. (pause) Father, hear us; help us to follow your Son we pray Oh Lord.

FOR THOSE WHO ALLEVIATE POVERTY IN THE WORLD, (pause) that they may see their work, not in mere economic terms, but as part of their commitment to the person of Christ, whom they find in the poor, oppressed and hungry. (pause) Father, hear us; help us to follow your Son we pray Oh Lord.

FOR THOSE OBSESSED BY THE DESIRE FOR WEALTH, (pause) that they may be secure in God’s love, are recognize that wealth alone will not bring them serenity and peace of soul. (pause) Father, hear us; help us to follow your Son we pray Oh Lord.

FOR A GREATER LOVE OF THE PERSON OF CHRIST, (pause) that we may surrender everything of ourselves in order to follow him who alone is the treasure of our lives. (pause) Father, hear us; help us to follow your Son we pray Oh Lord.

In silence we pray to God our Father for all our private intentions.

PRIEST: Father, we make our prayers that we may always be content to be rich in your love and grace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today’s Reflection
The only treasure that lasts is love. Every bit of kindness, generosity and hospitality we extend to others is our treasure of love. When we put our faith in the power of love, extend our energy in practicing love every day, and seek to be guided in our daily lives by Jesus’ examples of love, we are building a treasure that will never run out. Sometimes we spend more time surfing the internet than helping those in need. Or we spend more time at work than with our family. Sometimes we pay more attention to our possessions than to God’s law of love. Or we spend more time shopping for new clothes than reading the Bible. We cannot hide behind our work, our possessions, or our activities. We must always find ways to touch the hearts of those who need reassurance of God’s presence in the world.

Personal Devotional
Reflection of St. Joseph Day 10

St. Paul writes that in the next life Jesus Christ “will render to every man according to his works” (Rom. 2:6). What great glory must we not suppose that he has bestowed upon St. Joseph, who served and loved him so much while he lived on earth! Our Lord has promised a reward to him who gives a cup of cold water to the poor in his name. What, then, must be the reward of St. Joseph, who can say to Jesus Christ: “I not only provided thee with food, with a dwelling, and with clothes, but I saved thee from death, delivering thee from the hands of Herod”.

Let Us Pray
St. Joseph, increase our zeal for growing in holiness by the hope of eternal reward.

Today’s Rosary: The Sorrowful Mystery

IKOTEKPENE: Tomorrow is the 11th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of Most Revd Camillus R Umoh, 9/10/2010.

-FIRST READING-
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Joel (Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2).
“The day of the Lord God is coming, a day of darkness and gloom.”

Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests, wail, O ministers of the altar. Go in, pass the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! Because cereal offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God. Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God; and cry to the Lord. Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes. Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming, it is near, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been from of old, nor will be again after them through the years of all generations.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm9:2-3.6 and 16.8-9 (R. see 9a).
R/. The Lord will rule the world with justice.

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
all your wonders I will confess.
I will rejoice in you and be glad,
And sing psalms to your name, O Most High. R/.

You have rebuked the nations, destroyed the wicked;
you have wiped out their name forever and ever.
The nations have fallen in the pit which they made;
their feet have been caught in the snare they laid. R/.

But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
He has set up his throne for judgement.
He will judge the world with justice;
He will govern the peoples with equity. R/.

ALLELUIA John 12:31b-32
Alleluia. Now shall the ruler of this world be cast out, says the Lord; and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Luke11:15-26).
“If it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

At that time: [When Jesus had cast out a demon,] some of the people said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons”; while others, to test him, sought from him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and house falls upon house. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace; but when one stronger than he assails him and over comes him, he takes away his armour in which he trusted, and divides his spoil. He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest; and finding none he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes he finds it swept and put in order. Then he goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today’s Reflection
Jesus’ popularity brings about jealousy in his listeners. He is accused of healing with the help of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. Not to acknowledge the work of God is a sin and indeed a greater sin when we deny God’s work and ascribe it to demons. God desires to bring wholeness to broken humanity tormented by demons. The children of light always rejoice in God’s marvels in the midst of his people. But the children of darkness are not happy. We sin too when we forget to see good things in others and when we fail to rejoice with those who rejoice.

Personal Devotional
Reflection on St. Joseph Day 8

In the Gospels St. Joseph is called “Just”. What is meant by a just man? St. Peter Chrysologus says: “it means a perfect man-one who possesses all virtues”. Joseph was already holy before his marriage; but how much must his sanctity have increased after his union with the Blessed Virgin? The example of his holy spouse sufficed to sanctify him; and since Mary is the dispenser of all the graces which God grants to men, in what profusion must she not have showered them down upon her spouse, who she loved so much and by whom she was so tenderly loved!

Let Us Pray
St. Joseph, increase my devotion to Mary.
