And he spoke also to some, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and made nothing of all the rest of men, this parable:tow men went up into the temple to pray; the one a pharisee, and the other a tax_gatherer
(luke 18:9-10
This is a parable for every self-rigteous person to take to heart. The pharisee prayed to himself,"God, i thank thee that i am not as the rest of men, rapacious, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax-gatherer. I fast twice in the week, i tithe everything I gain''.not knowing the true God, he prayed to himself. He knew that many men were guilt of serious crimes, and he included the tax-gatherer with them merely because he was a tax-gatherer: was this not enough to condemn him? On the psitive side, he considered it a great credit to himself that he went without tow meals each week, and also that he gave tithes of all his gains. Whether this was true or not, it was a trifling matter to boast about. He forgot entirely to confess to God the shame of his own haughty pride. The tax-gatherer, on other hand, stood far away and would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but in broken humiliation pled with God, Have compassion on me,the sinner".He did not bring to God a list of the evils he had refrained from doing, nor a list of some outwardly good things he had actually done; but making no excuses for himself, confessed himself to be'' the sinner; as though he were the only one; for true repentance does not lead me to compare myself with others, but to recognize that I myself am the sinner in the eyes of God. Any sensible person can understand and approve of the rightness of the Lord's comment on this. For He says that the tax-gatherer returned to his house justified, and not the pharisee. For every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted!
