FRIDAY, 12 JANUARY
TEXT: JOSHUA 6:12-27
TOPIC: WITH GOD, YOUR JERICHO MUST FALL
Jericho has become a symbol of an obstacle to success, victory and blessings in the lives of men. Whenever there is a delay in achievement due to an identified cause, it is classified as the ‘wall of Jericho’ standing against the movement of God’s people into their promised land, 6:1. At such times of difficulties in man’s movement to accomplish a set goal, he needs to rely fully on God’s directives without deviation. Joshua, as the leader of Israel “got up early the next morning” vs.12-14 and swung into action as the Lord had commanded, (see vs.2-5).
It should be noted that walking with God demands patience and trust and allowing Him have full charge of the situation committed into His hands. The action that will bring the victory must be repeated for six days and results expected on the seventh day, vs.3, 14. On the seventh day, the fullness of God’s timing, they acted according to His instructions through Joshua. He said, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! And as they did that, the wall collapsed vs.15-20. With God, nothing shall be impossible is a true saying, but you must keep the rules, read vs.21-25.

QUESTION: How can you handle the obstacles of 2018?

PRAYER: Your walls of Jericho will fall before You as you walk with God this year in Jesus’ name; Amen.

THURSDAY, 11 JANUARY
TEXT: JOSHUA 6:1-11
TOPIC: VICTORY WITHOUT THE ARM OF FLESH

There are times when man faces obstacles that prevent him from enjoying God’s expected promises. At such times, faith in the God that promised is imperative as He tries to overcome a ‘tightly shut’ land of promise vs.1, 2. The Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men”. The king of Jericho had been informed of the approaching army of Israel and so he made sure that the city was tightly shut up. It was this shut up city that He had given them. What is needed at such times when promises look impossible is to follow God’s instructions and the process laid out for realizing the promise, vs.3-5. In yesterday’s passage, the “commander of the army of the Lord” had been sent in advance to finish the battle ahead of His children, see Josh. 5:13-15. It was on this grace that God didn’t ask the people to carry any weapon against Jericho but to prepare the shout of victory at the right time vs.6-11. If we believe that we have the All-Powerful God as our God, we will not depend on the arm of flesh for our victory this year.

QUESTION: How would you achieve victory over your enemies and obstacles on your way this year?

PRAYER: Grant unto me dear Lord, the grace to follow Your instructions for victory without depending on the arm of flesh this year in Jesus’ name; Amen.

SUNDAY, 7 JANUARY, 2018
TEXT: JOSHUA 3:7-17
TOPIC: GOD’S PROMISE TO HONOUR JOSHUA.

Here we read about God’s assurance to exalt Joshua and be with him as He was with Moses.

It was to demonstrate to the Israelites that Joshua has the same anointing as Moses, vs.7, 8.

The miraculous crossing of the Jordan River and driving out the inhabitants of the lands they were to possess would be a sufficient proof that Joshua had God’s authority, vs.9, 10.

He ordered the priests and commanded the people on what to do as they were about to cross the river, vs.10-13.

Obedience to Joshua’s directives brought about an amazing miracle, stopping the flow of streams into Jordan and its parting to allow passage on dry land, similar to the crossing of the Red Sea, vs. 14-16, see also Ex.14:21.

Again, the Israelites passed through Jordan on dry land under Joshua, vs.17 as it was with the Red Sea under Moses.

If leaders of God’s people will live in honour to God, He will surely keep His promises to lead them in all circumstances.

QUESTION: Will you live your life in honour to God this year to make Him repeat His promises to you?

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, grant unto me the grace to live a life that will bring honour unto You, in Jesus’ name; Amen.

FRIDAY, 5 JANUARY
TEXT: JOSHUA 2:15-24
TOPIC: OBEDIENCE TO CONDITIONS AS BASIS FOR UPHOLDING AN OATH
An oath is a binding promise made by a person to fulfill the content of an agreement made with another person, see Josh.9:14-16. It’s also an affirmation that what is said or about to be said would be nothing but the truth. Our reading today shows a similar situation in which a solemn agreement was made between Joshua’s spies and Rahab (the harlot) for her safety, vs.12-14. Looking carefully at the content of the oath, some conditions must be met before Rahab could enjoy the safety of her life and that of her family members the power to become God’s children is premised on receiving Christ as Lord and Saviour (John 1:11, 12; Rom.8:14). The fulfillment of a promise with an oath usually contains certain conditions that must be met. Look carefully at God’s promises contained in the scriptures and as Rahab the harlot fulfilled the conditions for safety vs.17-18. So must you fulfill God’s conditions for you to live in safety in 2018? “Bind this line of scarlet thread in the window…vs.18” was a condition Rahab had to fulfill and her family must stay in her house to be saved. Failure to abide by the conditions would have rendered the oath ineffective.

QUESTION: Do you desire that God fulfill His oath and covenant with you this year, 2018?

PRAYER: Gracious Father, help me to obey the conditions upon which your blessings will follow me this year, in Jesus’ name; Amen.
