James 1:21-25
[21]. Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
[22]. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
[23]. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
[24]. for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
[25]. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
EXPOSITION
In James 1:21-24, there is a serious reminder that merely listening to, hearing, or reading God's Word without putting it into action disappoints God and harms the believer. This admonition echoes the life principle exemplified by Ezra in Ezra 7: 10. Ezra didn't just engage in passive reading, or listening, he diligently studied and lived by the Law before teaching it to others. His commitment extended beyond mere comprehension to practical application.
It is essential to pray against forgetfulness after encountering God's Word, so as not to become a forgetful hearer (Jas. 1:25b). Continual reflection and application of the Word are crucial. God desires us to immerse ourselves in His perfect Law, which alone brings true liberty (Jn. 8:32,36). By abiding in His Word, we invite divine blessings and prosperity into every aspect of our lives (cf. Psa. 1:1ff). Therefore, let us not merely be hearers, or readers of God's Word but active participants who apply its principles in our daily lives. Through consistent study, remembrance a
