WALKING IN GOD'S PURPOSE WITH HONOUR FOR PARENTS
Luke 2:49 “Why were you searching for me?” He asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
You can pursue God’s purpose and still honour your parents. Jesus Christ our lord, saviour and perfect example was already aware of his divine purpose, yet he did not use purpose as an excuse to dishonour his parents. Jesus said, “I must be about my Father’s business.” This shows purpose is God-given, not self-chosen, every child has a divine assignment and children should be taught early: “You are not an accident, God has a plan for your life.” Parents should help their children discover God’s purpose, don’t just push your own ambitions on them.

Purpose does not cancel honour, even though Jesus knew his purpose, he did not rebel. In fact, after this moment, he returned home and remained obedient (Luke 2:51). Purpose without honor becomes rebellion and honour without purpose is lacking direction. God never calls anyone to dishonour authority in the name of purpose.

Parents should know that they are part of God’s process. Mary and Joseph did not fully understand everything Jesus said at that moment, but they were still part of his journey. Though parents may not fully understand your calling. God still uses them to shape you. So to walk in purpose with honour means being patient, communicating respectfully and trusting God’s timing.

Purpose requires preparation at home. Before Jesus started his public ministry, he spent years at home, learning growing and submitting. The home is where character is built, discipline is formed and purpose is prepared. For young people, please don’t rush the process, God is preparing you.

Honour opens the door for fulfillment. After the event in Luke 2:51, Jesus grew in wisdom and favour (vs. 52). Honour attracts wisdom, favour and opportunities. Many young people especially delay their destiny, not because they lack purpose, but because they lack honour. The story of a young girl in Ibadan named Bola who loved singing in church is of note. She believed God was calling her into music ministry. One day, she was invited to join a youth choir in another town. She was excited and wanted to go immediately. But her parents said, “Focus on your education for now. Your time will come.”

Bola felt disappointed but chose to honour her parents. She stayed, continued singing in her local church, and developed her gift quietly. Years later, during a church program, a guest minister noticed her and connected her to a larger platform. She honoured her parents and waited, and her gift eventually made room for her at the right time. You cannot succeed in God's purpose while being disobedient.

Jesus is our perfect example, he knew his purpose, honoured his parents and fulfilled his destiny.

Lord Jesus we pray that you help our children pursue your calling with humility and honour for parents. Let every home be a place where purpose is discovered and nurtured. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You don’t have to choose between purpose and honour, you need both.
God bless you.
