HAPPY EVER AFTER
Ruth 4:13-22

The women living there said, ‘Naomi has a son!’ And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David (v 17)

A STORY which commenced with tragedy and sadness closes with great joy. Author A. Graeme Auld makes the accurate comment that of the main characters in the story, all of them are winners! Naomi, bereft of husband and her two sons, with no grandchildren to give her support or joy, who returned to Bethlehem burdened and not a little bitter because of her hardships, now finds happiness and contentment.

Every good thing sprang out of the loyalty and love of Ruth for Naomi. Ruth’s deep affection for Naomi was recognised by almost everyone, a recognition which resulted in a delightful tribute by the neighbours who said to Naomi, Your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons ..: For a Hebrew mother to vis give birth to seven sons was the height of fulfilment. And Ruth, so we are led to believe, found her destiny fulfilted with Boaz.

By the levirate marriage, Obed, Ruth’s first son, was counted as the son of Mahlon, Ruth’s late husband. This was why the neighbours told Naomi he would renew her life and sustain her in old age. We fully understand why Naomi took the child so lovingly and cared for him.

We are not told whether Boaz had been married before and was bereaved, or whether he had children; we are simply left to assume he was a good man whose life was firmly in the hands of God. Above all, the writer of this lovely story wants us to know that God is in control of his world, and out of the most difficult circumstances can, and Will, bring goodness and joy.

‘And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask’ (v 11)
Ruth 3:10-18

THAT Ruth was attractive is suggested by Boaz’s statement that she had not ‘run after the younger men’ Within that statement is the assumption that those young men — ‘whether rich or poor - would have considered her a prize worth having. That she stayed within the cultural requirement of the kinsman-redeemer concept, merely emphasized her total acceptance of Judaism and its family values. It also underlined her loyalty to Naomi which never wavered, even in the face of great adversity.

Boaz, that ‘man of standing’ was also a man who cherished family values. Never for a moment did he shrink from his family role as kinsman-redeemer. He must have been aware of the family relationship with Naomi and, through Naomi, with Ruth and worked out that he was not the next of kin, hence his statement in verse 12 that Naomi had a closer kinsman. As an aside, we can add that Naomi probably had that information also, but shrewdly guessed that the other man would not fulfill the role and chose to make the direct appeal to a kinsman whose qualities ensured he would act as the law required.

The very soul of honor and discretion, Boaz counseled Ruth not to be seen leaving the threshing-floor area. A ruling existed that if adultery was even suspected a levirate marriage could not take place. Knowledge of this ruling seems to confirm that Boaz and Ruth acted honorably and well within the framework of their culture. Surely the Lord was with them and, happily, both of them seemed to know it.

PRAYER
Help me, O Lord, to spend each day
Quite confident that you are near;
So near, that I can hear
Each guiding word you have to say;
That all I think or say or do,
Will be a means of honoring you.

THE TOUCH OF PROVIDENCE

And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, ‘Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favour’ (v 2)

FOLLOWING the introduction of Boaz as another major and providential element within our story, we continue to delight in the way this account of God’s providence unfolds.

We are left to assume that Naomi and Ruth lived an unsupported and therefore spartan life. Doubtless, they discussed their difficulties which led to Ruth volunteering to follow the time-honored custom of gleaning in the fields. Provision had been made in the Law for the ‘poor and alien. Harvesters had been commanded not to cut to the edge of the fields, nor to glean the fields themselves, nor even to return for a harvest sheaf if they had overlooked it. Consequently, the harvesters were followed by the poor, aliens, and widows. On each of these three grounds, Ruth was qualified as a gleaner.

What she did not know was that the field she had selected for gleaning to Boaz. As it turned out is another way of saying, The Sovereign Lord was at work looking after his children: Quite obviously, Ruth was Known to the harvesters and acceptable to them, but she was not known to Boaz other than by reputation.

Of the many truths we learn from this beautifully told story, one of the most important surely relates to the divine providence. Although Life is never short of difficulties, even great tragedies at times, God’s hand is never distant from his children. He exercises his skills upon our circumstances to bring good out of them. As Paul wrote later, ‘In all things God works for the good of those who love him.'

THE HOMECOMING
Ruth 1:19-22

When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them (v19)

RUTH’S words of loyalty successfully stifled any further attempt Naom! might have made to encourage her to return home, and the two women set out on their journey to Bethlehem. There was something almost heroic in Naomi’s initial intention to travel through the hill country between Moab and Judah on her own, but we are learning quickly that Naomi was a remarkable woman. The fact that the ‘whole town was stirred’ when the two women arrived, lends credence to the assumption that Elimelech had belonged to a family of consequence.

The name Naomi means ‘lovely, delightful, pleasant’. This explains her response to the women’s question, Can this be Naomi?’ In spite of all the wisdom, fortitude and grace that could be seen in Naomi, she replies to this use of her name with a touch of bitterness: ‘Don't call me Naomi [pleasant], call me Mara [bitter].'

She could hardly help contrasting her homecoming with her home leaving. Then, she had her husband Elimetech and their two sons, Mahlon and Kilion. To escape the famine they had set out on an adventure hoping for more than mere survival. Where is the immigrant who does not have large dreams? And while they did not envisage being away long - ‘for a while’ - she never anticipated returning as a widow, bereft also of her sons. We can understand her observation ‘that she ‘went away full’ and had been ‘brought back empty’.

However, we note that even though she was upset, with a combination of fatigue, painful memory and relief releasing her feelings of bitterness, she still held on to God. He was still a reality in her life. Her affliction was from his hand but, in time, she would be rejoicing in God’s generosity.

A PUZZLING DECISION
Ruth 1:1-5

They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there (v 2)

HARVESTS were hard-won in the rocky Judaean hills. in the event of a famine, those who lived there would pe greatly disadvantaged compared with others living in the more fertile areas nearby. But it is a mystery why Elimelech should take his family to Moab. Moab was not the friendliest place for a Hebrew.

The Moabites were descended from Lot and his daughters. It was the king of Moab who sent for Balaam to curse the Genesis 19:30-38 Israelites and it was Moabite women who led the Israelite men astray. Because of this there was an exclusion order against Moabites attending the assembly until ‘the tenth generation. Eglon of Moab had held Israel under subjection until Ehud, the judge, killed him and won Israel's freedom.

It seems strange that this old family of Ephrath, should go to Moab. Perhaps God had his own strategy at work. His love was for the entire world and, although Israel was his chosen means of blessing the world, he made gestures which can only be recognised in the light of history.

When Boaz entered this story and married Ruth they had a child whom they named Obed. We learn from the genealogy of David that Obed became the father of Jesse, who became the father of David. Inn that same genealogy we learn that — the father of Boaz was Salmon. But in the genealogy which Matthew gives of our Lord, we learn that Salmon’s wife, the mother of Boaz, was none other than Rahab of Jericho, the woman who harboured the Israelite spies! Joshua 2:1-21; 6:25 Was God making it clear that redemption was for everyone,Jew and Gentile, even the most unlikely people?

PONDER
God’s love can never be confined
To this or that much-favoured race;
By God’s own heart love is designed
To give to all his boundless grace,
And by love’s great eternal plan
All people come within his span.
