SUNDAY SERMON RECAP BY Agbajelola Blessing JP
TOPIC: LOOKING THE FACE OF THE LORD
"Looking the face of the Lord" means to seek God’s presence, favor, and approval. But often, people’s mockery, criticism, and opinions try to distract us. The Bible gives us a clear pattern.
🔸 Set your eyes on God, not on people - Hebrews 12:2
"Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
The principle: You can only look one direction at a time.
Joseph is a great example. His brothers mocked his dreams Gen 37:19, Potiphar’s wife accused him, prisoners forgot him. But Genesis 39:2 says "The Lord was with Joseph". He kept looking to God’s face, not to their mockery.
How: Daily devotion, prayer, and Scripture. When you start your day with God, His voice becomes louder than people’s voices.
🔸 Choose God’s approval over man’s approval - Galatians 1:10
"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? ... If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."
The principle: Mockery only hurts when we value the mocker’s opinion more than God’s.
David faced mockery from Goliath, from his brothers, even from Michal his wife 2 Samuel 6:16. But he said in Psalm 27:8 "Your face, Lord, I will seek." He danced before the Lord, not before people.
How: Ask: "What does God say about me?" not "What will people say?" God calls you righteous, chosen, beloved 1 Peter 2:9.
🔸 Walk like Zechariah and Elizabeth - Luke 1:6
"Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly."
Note: “in the sight of God” = before the face of the Lord.
Even though people probably mocked them for being childless and old, their focus was "in the sight of God". Their integrity was with Him, not with the crowd.
How: Obedience in private. When you live right before God when no one is watching, public mockery loses its power.
🔸 Expect mockery, but remember God’s reward - Matthew 5:11-12
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven."
Jesus Himself was mocked. Hebrews 12:3 "Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."
The principle: If you’re walking with God, mockery is proof you’re on the right road. Don’t be surprised, be prepared.
🔸 Practical steps to keep looking at God’s face. Instead of this, Do this;
– Imstead of listening to gossip/mockery, follow Psalm 1:1 "Do not sit in the seat of mockers"
– Instead of comparing yourself on social media, take heed to Psalm 16:8 "I keep my eyes always on the Lord" |
– Defending yourself to everyone, follow 1 Peter 2:23 instead; Jesus "entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly"
– Seeking validation, apply Isaiah 50:7 instead "I set my face like flint"
Prayer Focus:
"Father, turn Your face toward me Numbers 6:25. Help me to seek Your face and not be distracted by the mockery of people. Give me the boldness of David, the integrity of Zechariah, and the focus of Jesus. Let Your approval be enough for me. Amen."
Bottom line:
Looking to the face of the Lord means living for an audience of One. People may mock, but God sees, God remembers Luke 1:7, and God rewards. When His face shines on you, the mockery of people becomes background noise.
