Devotional Reading: Matthew 12:46-50

Background Scriptures: Acts 16:1-3; Philippians 2:19-22

Lesson Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:1-6; 3:14-16

GOLDEN TEXT
I am reminded your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 2 Timothy 1:5

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, class members should be able to:
Discuss what attracted them in their parents to be Christians.
Appreciate the impact of home training received from their Christian parents.
Suggest ways they can help their children grow in Christian virtues.

INTRODUCTION
Kudus is the first son but the third of his parents' five children. His Father, an unbeliever, lives far away from home. Kudus and his siblings have never enjoyed paternal care because their father comes home once or twice in four months. He just comes home only to spend not more than two nights. But their mother provided the children with maternal care and brought them up in the way and fear of the Lord. As a devout Christian who was highly respected in their church and in the community, she had an opportunity to train her children with good virtues. She ensured that her children loved the Lord and they were active in the Choir, Lydia, Girls Auxiliary and the Royal Ambassadors.

Their father was an unbeliever who did not have time for God. Irrespective of this, Kudus and his siblings did well in school as they passed all their subjects excellently. What a worthy commendation to a virtuous woman for the parental training, spiritual upbringing, and home influence that she impacted her children! God severally instructed the Jews to train their children (Deuteronomy. 6:4-7; 11:19). Hence, children's training is not handled carelessly in Jewish Christian homes (Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4). Today's lesson focuses on the parental influence and home training that Timothy received which later became evident to all the people around him.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. Godly Parental Influence

2 Timothy 1:1-6
Paul met Timothy in Lystra where he lived with his mother and grandmother. His Father, whose name is unknown, was a Greek, but his mother and grandmother were Jewesses and believers. Timothy's devotion, lifestyle and virtues became evident to the believers in Lystra and Iconium. The people in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him and recommended him to Paul as a worthy disciple who would be helpful to him in his missionary journey. Therefore, Paul circumcised him to be
accepted by the Jews, who knew that his father was a Greek (Acts 16:1-3). Paul consistently prayed for Timothy, his spiritual son. He was concerned about his state when he was facing opposition and persecution. However, he was always encouraged each time he remembered the sincere faith bequeathed by his mother and grandmother, Eunice and Lois, respectively. His mother and grandmother were devout and committed believers. They feared and served the Lord and transferred the same to Timothy. He had an excellent parental upbringing, home training, and morals. Apostle Paul, therefore, exhorted him because of God's gift in his life.

You cannot give what you do not have. So, parents are expected to exemplify godly virtues in raising godly seeds and worthy ambassadors for the Lord (Malachi. 2:15; 2 Corinthians. 5:20). Indeed, parental care, home training and the nurture of children cannot be taken for granted if we shall eliminate the vices of this time and create a better society.

DISCUSSION TIME
Comment on Paul's and people's commendations about Timothy as recorded in Acts 16:1-3 and 2 Timothy 1:5.

Discuss the influence of good parenting and home training on raising godly children for a healthy society.

2. Paul's Admonition to Timothy

2 Timothy 3:14-16
In his closing charge to Timothy, Apostle Paul reminded him of his teaching, way of life, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecution, suffering and how God rescued him from all he went through in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. He then emphasised that living right and maintaining a godly life will always attract opposition and persecution (vv. 10-12). In addition, Paul said that many would be deceived by deceivers and impostors (v. 13). However, he said to Timothy, "But as for you," that is, he should continue in what he had learned and had been convinced of, and he should not forget the Holy Scripture with which he was brought up from infancy. He emphasised that the Scriptures alone have been the basis for his wisdom and salvation (have made him wise for salvation) through faith in Christ Jesus. More so, "all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (v. 16).

Believers should note that when they choose to live a life that is pleasing God, there is a tendency to face opposition and persecution. Many deceivers and impostors use different kinds of philosophies and heresies to deceive people these days. Christians must not fall prey to their tricks. Instead, we must tenaciously hold on to our faith in Christ Jesus and obey the teaching of the Holy Scripture, which is sufficient to carry us through our Christian journey.

DISCUSSION TIME
How can parents help their children to become worthy ambassadors of Christ wherever they find themselves?

Discuss ways to exercise patience, discipline, hope and vision.

Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity
Allow class members to point out areas where some parents have failed to provide their children with good parenting care and home training and suggest the best ways to make amends. Tell them also to share how they can represent Christ well.

Take Home: Write down three lessons you are taking home from today's lesson.

Prayer Points
1. Pray that God will help you to raise godly children who will love and serve Him in obedience.
2. Pray that your life will reflect Christ, point men to the cross and bring them to His saving grace and power for Kingdom expansion.

Commitment: Based on today's lesson, make a personal commitment to raise godly children who will be good ambassadors of Jesus Christ wherever they find themselves.

EXCERPTS FROM SUNDAY'S MESSAGE

MINISTER: REV'D. DR. KAYODE AYINDE

THEME: PEACE

TOPIC: PEACE BE IN THIS HOUSE (PART II)

TEXT: PROVERBS 17:1-2; LUKE 10:5-6

Last week, we resolved that all of us would return to our respective homes to labour and to ensure that peace reigns. If there is no peace in a home, the town will look like a bush. But if there is peace at home, one will be profitable wherever one goes.

If you are a man of peace, the peace of the Lord will be seen all over you wherever you go, because the only thing you will trade and transact will be peace. If you are going to give peace to your home, you must first have peace in your heart.

In Luke 10:5, Jesus instructed His disciples to first say, “Peace be to this house,” in every house they entered. Jesus told them to ensure that their peace was sustained, even when the people they were dealing with were not people of peace. He told them to make sure that nothing tampered with their peace. When you have the peace of the Lord with you, you must ensure that irrespective of what anyone is doing, you do not allow your peace to be tampered with. Guard your heart with all diligence. Guard your peace too. Never let your peace be taken away from you.

Let us compartmentalize this:

1. Relational Peace
This is peace in your relationship with your spouse, your parents, your children, your neighbours, your house help, your master, your mistress, and your household staff.
House and home are slightly different.

Although "house" can be used interchangeably with "home," in this context we are talking about both. Your home is your beautiful edifice. When I say "your house," I am referring to your relationship with everyone living in your house. Your relationship with your wife, your husband, your children, your house help, and your gateman will determine your peace.
Relationships in general are where you need peace. What is your relationship with your wife, your husband, and your children like? Every individual living under your roof is a VIP — a Very Important Person.
Let there be peace in your relationships. Let there be good and peaceful relationships.

2. Peace in the Aspect of Our Health
That is, peace in your body. You must be healthy. The Bible says, _“I wish above all things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.”_ 3 John 1:2.
There is nothing as important as the prosperity of your soul and body. If you have money and you do not have good health, you are nothing. Whatever you need to do to be healthy, do it with all intentionality.
Always ensure you are peaceful in your health. If you want to fast, fast to ensure there is peace in your health. If you want to eat, eat food that will bring peace to your health. Prayer alone cannot bring peace. You must also take precautions. It is not only in the court of law that ignorance is not an excuse. Ignorance is not an excuse even before God. Anything you need to do to make yourself healthy, please do it.

Do not compare yourself with anyone. The way God made us, He made us to be different from each other. Your health is not something your wealth can buy. The best drug cannot buy a little health if God does not give it.
You must understand that there are many things God will not do for us, but He has given us the capacity to do them ourselves. Control what you do to your health if you want to have peace in your health.

3. Environmental Peace
Peace in the aspect of our environment. Ensure that your environment is not dangerous for the people around you. When I talk about environmental peace, I am referring to your physical environment: your house, your compound, your kitchen, and your bedroom.
Let your kitchen be peace-friendly. Let your house be peace-compliant. Do not leave naked wires anywhere. Let your environment be peace-compliant. Do not leave your well open after you have fetched from it. Ensure you cover your well after you have fetched water so that nothing falls inside.
If you want peace for yourself, do not be careless. If anything happens to people under your roof, it can affect your peace.

Do everything to ensure that nothing bad happens. Clean your environment. Avoid any form of pollution. Do not be the cause of pollution in your environment. Your physical environment must not be toxic, and it must not be uncomfortable for peace to dwell. Let your environment be peace-friendly so that there will be peace.

WHAT ARE SOME PATHS TO PEACE?

1. Salvation
Jesus came into this world to give peace to all. Therefore, those who have Jesus have peace. It is the peace that made Peter sleep even in the midst of soldiers. Even in the midst of troubles, faith can sing. That is peace in the midst of crisis, and it comes after you have met with Christ and He has met with you.
I encourage us to pray for the salvation of everyone in our homes. When your husband is saved, there will be peace in the home. When there is salvation in the home, there will be peace in the home.

2. The Path of Training and Teaching
Training is what brings peace in the home. _Proverbs 22:6_ _“Train up a child in the way he should go, and he will give you rest.”_
As parents, let us be intentional in training our children. Let us be intentional in teaching them and exposing them to the truth according to their age. Teach them with all skillfulness, and according to their mental capacity.
It is good for our children to do well academically, but without the knowledge of God, all academic knowledge is useless. Your children must be trained in the path of peace by introducing Jesus to them. Lead your children in the way. Jesus is the Way. Introduce Jesus to them.
When your children grow up with a godly mentality, they will be peaceful.
Adults too should submit themselves for godly training and teaching. Make yourself available for training. What you do not know may be killing you. Everybody must be trained by the Word of God.

3. The Path of Cleanliness
_Cleanliness is next to godliness._ Be clean. Make sure you wash your hands and keep them clean before you eat.
Make your room, your kitchen, and everywhere around you clean.

4. Godliness
You can keep your environment clean, but if you are not godly, you are a problem. _Proverbs 4:20-22_
Be godly. Live a godly lifestyle. Be godly in the way you use your body. Ungodliness can bring sudden termination. Ungodliness can bring problems to the home. Nabal trod the path of ungodliness and that almost brought problems to his home. Do not be like him.

5. Carefulness
Relate with people with care. Be careful to care for everyone in your home. Let your carefulness manifest in caring.
Be intentional about showing care even to people around you. Ask about the welfare of the families of those who work with you.
- Show your wife that you care.
- Show your husband that you care.
- Show your children that you care.
Be careful and be intentional about that. Be careful about your body. Be careful about what you eat and what you drink.
You must be careful if you want to have peace.

6. Prayer
The path of prayer is very important. Be ready to pray. The devil does not like those who love God. The devil only likes those who lack God. The devil wants to tamper with anything that will tamper with your peace. Do not allow him.
Prayer is something you can do anywhere. There is no biblical prayer posture.
- Prayers can be said when you are lying down.
- Prayer can be said when you are eating.
- Prayer can be said when you are reading.
- Prayer can be said when you are walking.
- Prayer can be said when you are standing.
- Prayer can be said when you are working.
When you combine your salvation with prayer, godliness, cleanliness, and carefulness, your house will be peaceful.

🙏PEACE!
