A Christian Science Perspective on World Peace.
From a Christian Science standpoint, world peace is not merely the cessation of warfare or the balancing of political powers. It is the natural outgrowth of spiritual understanding the realization of the allness of God, divine Love, and the nothingness of evil. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses” (p. 228). True peace begins with spiritual dominion an inner calm and authority that comes from knowing that man is governed by God, not by fear, conflict, or mortal mind.
Christian Science teaches that peace is not dependent on external conditions, but on divine consciousness. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you” (John 14:27). The Christly peace is a spiritual quality, rooted in the eternal nature of divine Mind. It is not vulnerable to political unrest or material instability. Instead, it is maintained through a spiritual understanding of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence. When we perceive God as the only power and presence, we see that hatred, rivalry, and fear have no divine sanction and therefore no true authority.
The metaphysical basis of peace lies in the acknowledgment that all men and nations reflect the one divine Mind. There is no clash in infinite Mind, and there are no conflicting identities within God’s creation. Eddy affirms in Science and Health, “The intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man” (p. 284). This statement implies that true communication spiritual understanding and harmony already exists among God’s children and cannot be interrupted by race, nationality, or material boundaries. As individuals align their thought with this truth, they become active peacemakers, contributing to the unfoldment of a divine order that includes no war, hatred, or division.
Christian Science also reveals that war is the outcome of mental warfare the belief in many minds, separate wills, and conflicting self-interests. The solution, therefore, is metaphysical: to eliminate the belief in duality and to affirm the indivisible oneness of divine Mind and its manifestation. Peace is not something to be negotiated on human terms alone; it is a divine law to be understood and demonstrated. As Eddy writes in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, “God is universal, confined to no spot, defined by no dogma, appropriated by no sect. He is our Father and our Mother, our Minister and the great Physician: He is man’s only real relative on earth and in heaven” (p. 150).
The promise of peace is fulfilled as thought is lifted above the mortal sense of life to spiritual reality. World peace, then, is not an elusive dream but a present possibility one that must be demonstrated individually and collectively through the conscious practice of divine Love. Each prayer that acknowledges God’s supremacy and man’s spiritual identity is a powerful force for good, breaking the mesmerism of conflict and revealing the harmony that is already established in divine Mind. As the prophet Isaiah foretold, “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9).
