AGAPE IS NOT RESENTFUL – CHOOSING FREEDOM OVER OFFENCE
Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (RSV)
Resentment is love wounded and left unattended. It quietly keeps a record of wrongs, replaying offences long after the moment has passed. It weighs the heart down and imprisons the soul in yesterday’s pain. Agape love refuses this burden. It chooses forgiveness, not because the offence was insignificant, but because freedom is far greater.
Good sense and discretion make a person slow to anger, and it is his honour and glory to overlook a transgression or an offence [without seeking revenge and harbouring resentment]. – Proverbs 19:11 (AMP)
Agape understands that resentment hardens the heart and clouds spiritual vision. It distorts perception, weakens joy and interrupts intimacy with God. Love, however, releases the debt. It entrusts justice to God, the righteous Judge, and in doing so, preserves peace within and keeps the heart open to healing.
We are called to guard our hearts against offence, to protect our inner life from bitterness, resentment and unresolved anger. Offence will inevitably come, but it does not have to take root. Through prayer and intentional surrender, we release what hurts us and choose peace over poison, healing over hostility and grace over grudges.
To love as Christ loves is to let go again and again, allowing grace to have the final word.
Beloved, love is inviting you today to release every offence you are still carrying. What offence are you still holding onto? Name it honestly before God. Choose freedom. Let agape love cleanse your heart and restore your peace.
