WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob (Genesis 32:27). Every Christian must realise that when we come before God in prayer, His initial focus is on our character, not the complaints or petitions we bring. In Genesis 32:24-30, Jacob was praying for divine intervention for deliverance when he heard that Esau was coming to harm him with four hundred men. In the narrative, Jacob asked for a blessing during the agonising prayer session. Instead, the angel asked for his name. When he mentioned his name in that encounter, the Lord changed it to Israel - the new identity that would give Jacob power with God and men. Jacob's victory was obtained through intense, passionate supplication, prayers, and repentance. We will remember that Jacob had earlier lied about his name and identity to sn**ch the birthright from Esau. He acted against his conscience. The same question came again to him and he was honest in mentioning his real name. God had mercy on him and gave him a new name, marking a new beginning for Jacob, now Israel. God knows our lives, our hearts, thoughts, and motives. And because He is too holy to behold iniquity, our unrepentant sins block us from getting His attention. But when our sins are purged by the Lamb's blood, we stand as saints before Him, with a new identity, a new status, and a new name that carries nothing of our sinful past. We cannot enjoy a new day, a new dawn, and divine blessings, if we remain under the guise and cloak of a false identity clouded with sins and transgressions. God is more interested in your purity than your petition. What is your real name, be honest, and be blessed in Jesus name!

TRUE DEFINITION OF FREEDOM

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32. Freedom has been a basic human desire. It is most appreciated when threatened or lost. Freedom comes in different forms. Our Lord Jesus Christ offers a deeper understanding of true freedom and how it is secured in John 8:30-36. As He shared the gospel in the temple with mostly proud and antagonistic Jews, many believed in Him. He charged them to continue in His doctrine as proof of the genuineness of their discipleship. He also promised that as they continued in His word, they would know the truth, which would set them free. In response to the unbelieving Jews who tried to contradict His word, Christ further stated, If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Freedom comes from knowing the truth. We know the truth by knowing Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life. Knowing Him gives us the privilege of being free from the yoke and guilt of sin, lust, corrupt passions, satanic bo***ge, and divine condemnation. As we continue in His word, we are further exposed to particular liberating truths that help us enjoy more freedom in our pilgrimage and service. Knowing Him also confers upon us the responsibility of reaching out to our friends and neighbours lost in bo***ge to sin and trespasses. Christ died to set them free, too. The proof of our conversion and love for the Saviour is that we prayerfully and constantly get involved in soul-winning to help men experience and enjoy true freedom. You cannot be free indeed until you become Christ's disciple indeed.

BE OBEDIENT, AND BE BLESSED

And all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 28:2. Obedience to God is the only route to the right destination. One of the greatest lessons about obedience was taught by Mary, the mother of Jesus. The occasion was a wedding ceremony at Cana in Galilee, where Jesus Christ was invited as a guest. When they ran out of w**e, Mary approached Him for intervention, but He seemed to rebuff her. However, convinced that He could still do something, she told the feast's attendants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." At length, Christ instructed them to fill the six available water pots there with water, which He converted to superior w**e. That marked the beginning of public miracles in Christ's earthly ministry. Just as Mary advocated unquestioning obedience from the servants at the feast, Moses, in Deuteronomy 28:1-14, recommended absolute obedience to the people of Israel in their dealings with God. Great, rich, and varied blessings flow from such obedience. As in the case of Israel, our blessings, as Christians, hinge on obedience to God's word. Sometimes, God's instruction - such as filling pots with water when w**e was needed - may seem unreasonable to the human mind. Still, God knows, sees, and can do all things and knows better. It is safer to believe and act on His word than to depend on our understanding of life's issues. If we commit to obeying God in small and great matters, the blessings people are greedily and elusively running after will run after us and get to us without anxiety in Jesus' name.

THE BURDEN BEARER

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28. The burden of sin is so heavy that it takes only Jesus to lift it from you. Read Matthew 11:25-30 The pursuit of happiness, satisfaction, and success is the defining fact of life for many people. But all human efforts to achieve life's goals soon fizzle out, leaving a depressing feeling of emptiness in their hearts. In this condition, many people, leaning on their worldly wisdom and knowledge, begin to question and eventually give up on the true essence of living, only a few turn to the right source that brings meaning and wholeness to their lives. They saw the preaching, teaching, and performance of spectacular miracles of Jesus' ministry. But they refused to repent of their sins, accept His message, or believe His works. Rather than becoming discouraged at their attitude, Jesus was thankful to God for hiding the truth of the kingdom from those arrogant and worldly-wise people while exposing it to the babes who humbly and openly received the truth that was handed to Him by the Father. There is no wisdom in going through life with the burdens of guilt and shame for past and present sinful practices when Jesus has come to take them away and reconcile men with God. True wisdom is not to continue in your sin but to approach Jesus with childlike faith, confess and forsake all sins, and accept His offer of salvation and cleansing in His blood. Never allow the chance to be free from sin to pass you by. Instead, you should humbly follow Christ and rest confidently in your relationship with God.

FOLLOW GOD'S COMPASS

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have success Joshua 1:8. The path charted by God always leads to a desirable destination. In Joshua 1:1-9, God told him he was now wearing the big shoes of "Moses, His servant." He was younger than Moses, but his task was no less difficult: leading the Israelites through the River Jordan into the Promised Land was now up to him. Tough as the journey would get, the Lord gave him supreme assurances of success. He would possess every land he conquered in the vast territory known as Canaan. No man would successfully resist him all his life because he was divinely assured that "as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee". God repeatedly charged Joshua to be strong and brave, as he would indeed possess the land and share it among the Israelites. He must also act according to the law God handed down through Moses. Joshua's success depended on his obedience to it. If these were to happen, he must not cease to read, meditate, and faithfully observe all the content of the Book of the Law, for then he would prosper and record "success". And for the third time, the Lord urged him to be strong, brave, and never be afraid nor be dismayed, assuring him, "The LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." Acquired knowledge and past experiences are inadequate to equip us for life's journey. Only God knows the twists and turns ahead. He has great prospects for us and wants us to prosper in His service and our professions or vocations. But for these to materialize, we must follow His compass in Scripture. We should read, meditate, and obey it, and we must allow the Spirit of the Lord to guide our every thought and action. The journey may be tough, but victory is assured if we follow God's compass strictly. Follow the Lord who knows the road and be blessed in Jesus' name.

BROKEN THROUGH PAIN

And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Acts 5:41. It is Better to bend to God’s will than to be bent by it. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29. The fear of God is the best. Isaiah 26:16 LORD, in trouble, have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them. Isaiah 26:6-16 tells us how pain and suffering can lead us to God. The wicked people in Isaiah's time received favor from God daily, yet they refused to change and embrace righteousness. But when the judgment of God was upon them, they began to learn righteousness because they had come to their wits’ end. Experience has shown that wicked people pour out prayers to God while under chastisement, when their strong will and odious pride are crushed; and they seek to embrace the love and mercy of God which they had despised. We may not know exactly what can break a man and bring him into the saving grace of God. We will have to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our soul-winning. Some people have responded to the gospel because of the kindness and favor shown to them by the preachers, who display Christ’s mercy and compassion in their approach. The fact remains that many others will despise love and continue in sin until something serious and terrible happens to them. The advice to sinners here is clear; do not wait until God is compelled to break you before you bend. Respond to His call without further delay, tomorrow may be too late. May the Lord help us all in Jesus' name.

THE VALUE OF GOD’S PRESENCE

And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence Exodus 33:15. There is not much we can do without the presence of God. I'm sure that Moses knew that a shadow is not something to fear. A shadow of a dog cannot bite you, and a shadow of death cannot kill you, so he placed more value on the presence of God. All the threats and challenges we see in life are mere shadows of the reality above. Read Exodus 33:12-17. Moses knew that travelling through the desert without their God and Guide would be suicidal! He earnestly sought God's presence as confirmation that He had forgiven the iniquities of His careless congregation after the ugly incident of making the golden calf. As believers, we should be more interested in God's presence than in the privileges of this life, including holding a good position in the church. It is essential to realise that God's presence with us guarantees a host of peculiar privileges, both temporary and eternal. It also confers on us the responsibility of watchfulness, prayerfulness, and remaining unspotted. God's presence with us here guarantees our presence with Him hereafter. Prioritizing an intimate relationship with Him above material pursuits, recognizing that His nearness is our greatest asset and source of true fulfillment. Are you ready to do so?

HOW FAITHFUL ARE YOU?

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. Luke 16:10. Faith without faithfulness is a failure. Don’t waste your time waiting and longing for large opportunities that may never come. But faithfully handle the little things that are always claiming your attention. Jehoash was passionate about the repair of the breaches in the temple right from the beginning of his reign because he found solace there during the reign of wicked Athaliah, who vandalized the temple. 2 Kings 12:1-7 He allowed the priests to collect all the monies that came into the temple. But instead of repairing the Lord’s house, the priests converted the income to their personal use for years. King Jehoash then stopped the priests from collecting the offerings of the people. An offering box was made by Jehoiada the high priest, from where money was taken to buy timber and other materials for the ex*****on of the work. How is it that the ministers of God, who kept the charge at the temple and were the custodians of the ordinances of God, could not be faithful in little things? How were they to now preach against unfaithfulness and corruption in government if they could not be trusted? As believers, we are to come to equity with clean hands. He that cannot be safely imitated, ought not to be tolerated on the pulpit. As God’s representatives, we are to speak against the corruption and wickedness in the land. As such, we must be impeccable in character and faithful in stewardship. May the Lord help us to be faithful now and always in Jesus' name.

AVAILABLE FOR ALL

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2Peter 3:9. It is never the intention of God that man should perish. But Adam's fall corrupted humanity. A lack of true repentance has produced many counterfeit Christians who believe they are saved but are not. Joel 2:13 demands that you rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Also read Joel 2:12-17. The ministers of God are to lead God’s people in such gatherings where fervent prayers are to be made to God with the ministers who should weep between the porch and the altar saying, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach. God saw in Genesis 6:5. that the wickedness of man was great on the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The world at that time was judged and later the nation of Israel came into being through Abraham. Through Jesus Christ, the Seed of Abraham, God has now made salvation available to all men. True repentance is a genuine sorrow for wrongs done and a strong desire to desist from them. God demands this for genuine salvation to be effected. Matthew 3:8. The people of Nineveh were saved from destruction when they genuinely repented. God is compassionate; He will forgive and save anyone who sincerely comes to Him in true penitence. God’s compassion reaches depths beyond man’s imagination. Appropriate it.

COURAGE TO BUILD

Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work. Nehemiah 2:18. It takes courage to build in a time of distress, moral decadence, ineptitude, and spiritual lethargy. But if we do not stand for something worthwhile, we will fall for something worthless. Ezra 5:2 said, Then rose Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them. Ezra 5:1-5 recorded the feat of courageous men who rose to make up the walls of the house of God in Jerusalem during the period of captivity and national distress and disarray. This did not escape the watch of the authorities and representatives of their oppressors. Despite interruptions from two powerful political figures, the builders continued with the spiritual support of the prophets Haggai and Zachariah. The courage to build the fallen walls of Christianity does not lie with the pulpit alone, but also rests on the pew! As the clergy (like the prophets during Ezra’s time) declare the will of God and pray for revival, the laity and the elders should take up the mantle of the Holy Ghost and lend a strong hand to restore the decaying, falling walls of the Christian faith. In many assemblies today, sound doctrines have been trampled underfoot. Christian piety has been jettisoned while there are cracks in the walls of holiness and righteousness. The Church seems to be in the captivity of the enemy. The keepers of the spiritual gateway of many assemblies are complacent. Now, God is looking for those who will have the courage to establish righteousness and holiness in this generation and deliver the Church of God from reproach. May the Lord depend on you in Jesus' name.
