SERMON RECAP: THE HEART IS DECEITFUL
(Kingdom Keys Service - May 20, 2026)
ANCHOR SCRIPTURES: Jeremiah 17:9; Proverbs 4:23
WHAT GOD SAID TO US:
The Christian life is ultimately a matter of the heart because the heart is the control center of a person’s life. Jesus taught in Luke 6:45 and Matthew 12:34-37 that what comes out of a person is a reflection of what is stored within the heart. Christianity is therefore not merely about outward appearance or religious activity; it is about a deep and sincere commitment that flows from a genuine inward transformation.
The heart is never passive or neutral. It is the place where thoughts are formed, decisions are made, desires are nurtured, and intentions are stored. This is why Scripture warns us to guard our hearts diligently. A heart left unchecked can gradually become deceitful, leading us away from God’s truth and into self-deception.
Eve fell in the garden because she allowed her eyes and heart to draw her away from obedience to God. In the same way, temptation often begins from the desires that are allowed to grow within us. (James 1:14-15). What we continually expose ourselves to eventually shapes our thinking, influences our desires, and affects our decisions.
Because of the sensitivity and capacity of the heart, believers must be careful about what they entertain, what they listen to, and who influences them. Emotions and desires in themselves are not sinful, but when they are not examined in the light of God’s Word, they can easily lead to sin. This is why daily self-examination is necessary. If we fail to examine our hearts consistently, we risk building our lives on unstable foundations, making decisions based on feelings instead of truth.
Jesus also revealed in Mark 7:21-23 that evil actions originate from within the heart before they manifest outwardly. Yet, God does not reveal the condition of our hearts to condemn us, but to restore us in love (Galatians 6:1). The beautiful hope of the Gospel is that we are not left helpless with hearts we cannot trust. The same God who searches the heart is able to transform it. Through His Word, He exposes hidden motives, brings conviction, purifies our desires, and renews us from within (Hebrews 4:12-13).
Only God can truly give us a new heart and sustain a right spirit within us (Ezekiel 36:26; Psalm 51:10). Therefore, our confidence must never rest in ourselves, our emotions, or our self-discipline, but completely in Jesus Christ, who alone is able to purify, heal, guide, and preserve the heart in truth.
