PRESS RELEASE: JNI CONDEMNS THE HORRIFIC MOB LYNCHING OF UMMULKHAIR, AT THE MARARABAN JOS, KADUNA STATE, AND DEMANDS JUSTICE AS WELL AS WARNS AGAINST NIGERIA’S DESCENT INTO LAWLESS BARBARISM
Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) under the leadership of its President-General, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, received with profound shock, immense grief, and utter disbelief the deeply disturbing news of the gruesome mob lynching of Ummulkhair at Mararaban Jos, Kaduna state, an incident which has once again exposed the frightening collapse of moral restraint, the dangerous spread of misinformation, and the alarming normalisation of jungle justice in the Nigerian state. Indeed, human life in Nigeria has been reduced to nothing with the increasing stains of bloods on the Nigerian shore.
The JNI having carefully observed and followed-up the information of the circumstances that led to the most unfortunate lynching of Ummulkhair, wishes to state in categorical terms that such an act was barbaric, ungodly and remains condemned in its entirety. Not only that, the reported enraged mob action still requires proper and transparent investigation, as it represents one of the darkest manifestations of lawlessness, collective irresponsibility, and moral degeneration that continue to threaten the peace, stability, and sanctity of human life in Nigeria. More so, the reckless spread of misinformation, disinformation, fake allegations, malicious rumours, and inciting narratives have now become a weapon of destruction, leading innocent people to humiliation, violence, and death. It should be noted that no society survives when emotions replace evidence and mob actions replace institutions of justice. Sadly, our society is dangerously drifting from civilisation toward barbarism, where anger has replaced reason, and collective violence has become normalised.
JNI nevertheless extends its heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the immediate family of the deceased sister – Ummulkhair, whose precious life was cut short in a most cruel and painful manner, her friends, associates, and loved ones who are presently grieving this unimaginable loss, the Government and people of Kaduna state over this unfortunate tragedy, the entire Muslim Ummah and all peace-loving Nigerians who continue to witness with pain the erosion of positive reasoning, compassion, and human dignity in our society. We pray Almighty Allah forgives the deceased, envelops her with His boundless mercy, grants her Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and gives her family the strength and fortitude to bear the painful loss.
JNI strongly reprimands members of the Muslim Ummah and indeed the larger society over the increasingly dangerous culture of mob action, instant judgement, and extra-judicial punishment, as Islam prohibits taking of life of the innocent, unless through the due process of the law, because it places the highest premium on the sanctity of human life.
JNI therefore strongly calls for:
1. Immediate and transparent investigation:* Security agencies must launch a sincere, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
2. Prosecution of all perpetrators: Every individual directly or indirectly involved in the lynching, must be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
3. Investigation of police complicity: Particularly disturbing allegations surrounding the conduct of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Nigeria Police Force, Mararaban Jos Division, who reportedly surrendered the victim to the angry mob, instead of guaranteeing her constitutional protection.
4. If investigations confirm negligence, misconduct, or deliberate complicity, JNI demands that all officers involved directly or indirectly be prosecuted accordingly and be made to face the full consequences of the law, as the duty of law enforcement is protection of life — never surrendering citizens to mob violence.
5. Due compensation (Diyya) to the bereaved family be made, for equity, justice and foreclosing of any possibility of vengeance or reprisal.
6. Calls on the Kaduna State government and relevant authorities to take humane, sincere, and lasting steps to cushion the grief and hardship currently faced by the bereaved family – by way of taking responsibility of educating Ummulkair’s daughters and other children and the interventions must not be symbolic, please. It should include immediate humanitarian assistance, psychological and emotional support to the immediate family of the deceased Ummulkair, long-term welfare considerations for dependents left behind and institutional assurance that justice will not be compromised as justice delayed or neglected only deepens public distrust.
At this juncture, JNI calls upon scholars, Imams, preachers, community leaders, and Muslim organisations across Nigeria to intensify public sensitisation on:
i. The grave Islamic prohibition of mob action
ii. The dangers of acting upon rumours and unverified information
iii. The destructive consequences of misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information
iv. The sacredness of human life under the Islamic law and
v. The obligation to allow constituted authorities and legitimate institutions to handle disputes lawfully.
Silence in times like this only emboldens future violence. Therefore, the pulpit must be used responsibly to rebuild moral discipline within the society. Also we must understand clearly that:
When citizens begin to kill based on rumors…
When mobs become judge, jury, and executioner…
When institutions surrender to street anger…, then the society itself begins to collapse.
