The Universal Church commemorates the 60th World Day of Social Communications under the theme “Preserving Human Voices and Faces,” as chosen by Pope Leo XIV. This theme highlights the increasing role of technology, especially artificial intelligence, in communication and calls for greater attention to protecting human dignity, empathy, and authentic human interaction in an increasingly digital world.

The message underscores the importance of placing the human person at the centre of communication. While technological advancements offer significant benefits, they also present the risk of reducing individuals to data or automated representations. The Church, therefore, encourages a communication culture that values real human experiences and meaningful connections over purely algorithm-driven content.

This perspective closely aligns with our mission at Caritas Nigeria, particularly our commitment to upholding the Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person. Through our programs, we ensure that vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons and refugees are treated as individuals with unique identities, rather than as mere statistics within aid systems.

Furthermore, the message emphasizes that technology cannot replace human moral judgment and compassion. When not used responsibly, it can diminish human dignity.

Reflections from our Communications staff reinforce the importance of maintaining humanity in communication efforts, as we are reminded to use technology ethically to uplift and preserve the worth of every person.

Happy World Communications Day

Recently, Caritas Nigeria was honored to participate in the Graduation and Award Giving Ceremony of the Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace (COFP) Fellowship Programme held on May 9, 2026. Representing the Executive Secretary/CEO of Caritas Nigeria, Fr Peter Audu, was Friday Enejoh Alhassan, Senior Humanitarian Advisor. The event celebrated the 8th set of Fellows a diverse group of changemakers from five African countries dedicated to interfaith dialogue, conflict transformation, and sustainable development.

The ceremony featured inspiring remarks from distinguished leaders, including His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan and Most Rev. Gerald Mamman Musa, . Speakers emphasized that in an era often defined by social division, the COFP Fellowship remains a vital catalyst for regional stability. The graduation served as a powerful reminder of Cardinal Onaiyekan’s lifelong mission: that our shared humanity is far greater than our differences, and true peace is rooted in justice and reconciliation.

A significant highlight of the occasion was the call to strengthen the visibility of institutions like the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC). Despite its strategic role in fostering harmony between Islam and Christianity since 1999, many citizens remain unaware of its impact. Participants underscored the urgent need for massive awareness campaigns to entrench NIREC’s mission of national unity and religious tolerance into the hearts of all Nigerians to counter extremism and misinformation.

As the Class of 2026 embarks on their journey as ambassadors of peace, Caritas Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting interreligious dialogue and humanitarian service. We congratulate the new Fellows and remain dedicated to working alongside our partners to build a continent anchored in social cohesion and human dignity. Together, we are building bridges of hope across Africa.

Across communities in Lagos and Ekiti States, the Building Sustainable Livelihoods for Vibrant Communities (B-SLiC) Project funded by Conrad N. Hilton Foundation is transforming lives. What began as empowerment training has grown into thriving community enterprises that are generating income, strengthening families, and improving food security.

Women, youths, and vulnerable community members trained in vocational agricultural skills such as cassava processing, fish production and processing, as well as pepper and tomato processing, are now actively engaged in large-scale production and sustainable livelihoods.

Beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and Caritas Nigeria, alongside implementing partners, Sisters of Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, Sisters of Saint Michael the Archangel, Sisters of Saint Louis, and Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, for walking with their communities every step of the journey.

This is more than a project.
This is dignity restored, hope renewed, and communities transformed.

Following the Caritas Nigeria @15 Anniversary Essay Competition held last year to celebrate the organization’s 15th milestone, we have continued to inspire a new generation of changemakers through the establishment of Caritas Clubs in winning schools across Niger, Lagos, and Enugu States.

A team led by Dr. Ella Austin visited Himma International School, Minna; Abiolus School, Lagos; and Bishop Okoye Memorial College, Enugu. During these visits, Dr. Ella introduced the mission and vision of Caritas Nigeria to students and key stakeholders. The initiative was warmly received, with strong support from school authorities, PTA members, and government representatives, reflecting a shared commitment to nurturing humanitarian values among young people. In Minna, a representative of the Ministry of Education, Alh. Usman Abdullahi, commended the effort and pledged support, while school management across all locations expressed readiness to sustain the clubs.

The visits also created meaningful engagement within the school communities. To celebrate excellence and encourage youth participation, outstanding students were recognized with awards, sparking significant interest, as many students signed up to join the Caritas Clubs, pending parental consent.

In Enugu, the team paid a courtesy visit to the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo, to brief him on the club’s activation and the award presentations. The Bishop expressed joy at the initiative and commended Bishop Okoye Memorial College, Enugu for producing the winner of the top essay competition.

This milestone reflects Caritas Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to promoting charity, social justice, and youth empowerment, raising a generation of young people ready to contribute to a more compassionate society.

Caritas Nigeria strengthened its efforts to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) through a two-day working visit to Imo State from 6–7 May 2026. The visit, led by Dr. Eugene Onu, was part of the Ford Foundation–funded GBV Prevention Project and aimed at supporting effective implementation within Church structures.

The engagement brought together religious leaders and pastoral workers, using the Catholic Church’s wide community reach to address harmful gender norms. Through a congregational approach guided by Catholic Social Teaching, the project promotes respect, inclusion, and human dignity for women, men, girls, and boys, while strengthening the Church’s role in influencing positive social behavior.

Participants received orientation on the project’s goals and implementation process, alongside practical training sessions to build their capacity. To support their work, selected dioceses were provided with essential equipment such as laptops, printers, and tablets. Overall, the project continues to build on the Church’s strong grassroots presence to drive lasting change and promote a culture of peace, equality, and social cohesion.

In alignment with Caritas Nigeria's mandate to address protection concerns and social injustice, the Citi Foundation-funded project, in March 2026, organized a women-and youth-led community forum on gender-based violence (GBV). The forum aimed to raise awareness and create safe spaces for survivors.

The sessions were conducted in two communities: Wuro Jebbe in Adamawa State and Otuoba/Otuoke in Bayelsa State. These engagements responded to the high prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and provided an interactive platform for women and youth to share experiences, highlight systemic challenges, and identify risks and prevention strategies.

Participants were equipped with essential knowledge on SGBV, including:
• Definitions and common myths surrounding GBV
• The physical, psychological, and social impacts of SGBV
• Assertiveness skills and “Do No Harm” intervention approaches
• Community-specific barriers to reporting, such as stigma, shame, and victim-blaming
• Strategies for establishing community-led support networks and safe spaces for survivors

The forum was inclusive, with collaboration from key stakeholders, including community leaders, who supported the Caritas Nigeria Protection/GBV Lead, Margaret Sampson. This contributed to a strong turnout of 86 participants across both communities.

The discussions revealed the depth of fear and burden experienced by participants, driven by factors such as high levels of stigma, the silent nature of related health challenges, and the normalization of abuse within some cultural contexts. Caritas Nigeria remains committed to changing this narrative and ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals through sustained training and awareness initiatives.
