MANY MENTORS, ONE FATHER
BIBLE READING: 2KINGS 2:1-15; MATTHEW 23:1-12; JOHN 13: 1-20; 1 CORINTHIANS 4:15-17
"For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the Gospel." 1 Corinthians 4:15(NKJV)
In an attempt to fully understand the Concept of Fatherhood, it becomes important to discern certain Key Principles, one of which is the Principle of Exclusivity (2 Kgs. 2:12). This Principle highlights the fact that even though one may have a multitude of tutors, it is impossible to have more than one father, a fact which cuts across every facet of human existence. There are certain things in this life that a person can never have more than one of them. For instance, in the natural human family, one person can only have a pair of biological parents i.e., one father and one mother. Likewise, a woman can have only one husband per time. Also, as True Christian believers, we only have One Heavenly Father and only One Lord, our Saviour Jesus Christ (Eph. 4:4-6). This was the Issue which the Lord Jesus was addressing during His Scathing Rebuke of the Pharisees and doctors of the Law: "But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. DO NOT CALL ANYONE ON EARTH YOUR FATHER; FOR ONE IS YOUR FATHER, HE WHO IS IN HEAVEN. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ" (Matt. 23:8-10). We must never have any other God beside or before the Almighty God. We don't have several ways to God but rather we have only One Way: The Lord Jesus Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life (Jn. 14:6).
As we carefully examine our Key Scriptural Text as interpreted in the New Living Translation (NLT), we can fully comprehend and appreciate the Principle of Exclusivity: "For even if you had ten thousand others to teach you about Christ, you have ONLY ONE SPIRITUAL FATHER. For I became your father in Christ Jesus when I preached the Good News to you" (1 Cor. 4:15 NLT). From this, we can observe with clarity that we also have just one Spiritual father. Every Spiritual Family has just one Spiritual father, not two and definitely not more than that. For instance, the Dominion City Family has just only one Spiritual father whose name is Pastor David Ogbueli. Every other pastor who serves in the Spiritual Family is just ministering with Delegated Authority as a Guardian and Tutor (Gal. 4:1-2). When we were born, none of us was given the privilege of choosing the family through which we would come into the world. We don't get to choose our nationality, location of birth and most of all our parents. This same Principle applies Spiritually because all Truths are parallel. Although choice plays a critical part in our becoming Born again in that each individual gets to decide whether or not to accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord when the opportunity is presented, we still don't choose the exact day it happens or the avenue through which/whom God brings us the Good News. Eventually, we don't choose our Spiritual family or Spiritual fathers simply because it's not our choice to make.
During our Christian Journey, we will come across a plethora of teachers, tutors and Spiritual leaders, as we have seen in the aforementioned Scripture. These men and women are sent to play important roles in our lives as God leads them. But how do we distinguish and discern our Spiritual fathers among the numerous Spiritual leaders we would cross paths with? (Ps. 42:7). Many Christian believers make the mistake of choosing their fathers on the basis of sentiments or merely those things that eyes can see, like the size of his Church, wealth, Spiritual Influence and achievements. While these attributes are undoubtedly noble, these believers fail to recognize that it is God Himself Who sets the solitary in families (Psa. 68:6). As Genuine Christian believers, we need to prayerfully ask and seek the Face of God regarding His Purpose and Specific Assignment for our lives, (Jer. 33:3) trusting Him to direct us as our Shepherd. God then starts to connect your heart with that of the man he has raised as your father and also to your Spiritual Family (Ps. 23:1-3).
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, we magnify Your Holy Name today. O Lord, please open our eyes that we may clearly discern our Spiritual father in the midst of a multitude of mentors and tutors in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.
