WHY THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS' BIRTH WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED TO SHEPHERDS.

When the Son of God entered the world, God did something unexpected. He did not send angels to kings, governors, scholars, or the rich and powerful. The first people to hear the Good News were shepherds, watching their flock in the cold night.

Why?
The answer reveals the heart of God and the message of Christmas itself.

In the time of Jesus, shepherds were not important people.
They were poor, simple, and often looked down upon. Their work kept them away from the Temple, so many considered them religiously “unclean.” They lived on the edges of society.

Yet heaven opened for them.
Angels sang to them.
The glory of God shone around them.
The first witnesses of the Messiah were men that society ignored.

This was not an accident. It was a message.

First, God chose shepherds because Jesus Himself came as the Good Shepherd.
The prophets had already spoken of a shepherd-king who would guide His people with love and lay down His life for them. So God revealed the birth of the true Shepherd to those who understood the meaning of shepherding more than anyone else. They were poor, but their hearts were prepared.

Second, God chose shepherds to show that the Gospel is for everyone, not only the learned or powerful. The Good News begins at the bottom, not at the top. Heaven’s door swings open first to the humble. The world celebrates celebrities; God celebrates the lowly. Jesus was born in a manger, among animals. It makes sense that His first visitors were men who lived their lives among animals.

Third, God chose shepherds because they were watching, .
While the rest of the world slept, they kept vigil. Their eyes were open. Their hearts were awake.
God still comes to those who watch, those who are alert, prayerful, and waiting.
Many in Bethlehem missed the coming of Christ because they were distracted or too busy.
The shepherds were ready.

Fourth, God chose shepherds because they were men of trust.
When they heard the message, they did not argue or delay. They said, “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened.”
Faith responds. Faith moves. Faith leaves everything to seek Jesus.

Finally, God chose shepherds because He was revealing a new Kingdom, a Kingdom where greatness is measured not by position but by humility; where glory is seen not in palaces but in a manger; where the last become the first.

By calling shepherds first, God was announcing:
- My Son came for the poor.
- My Son came for the forgotten.
- My Son came for sinners.
- My Son came for all.

Christmas is not a feast of the powerful. It is the feast of the humble heart.
And even today, God still speaks first to those who are willing to listen in the quiet of the night, with a heart like a shepherd, simple, open, and watchful.

May we learn from the shepherds:
to listen,
to hurry toward Jesus,
and to share the Good News with joy.

MARY'S RELATION TO THE EUCHARIST

The great emphasis on the importance of Mary's relation to the Eucharist is rooted in the Legion's understanding of Mary's role in the Incarnation and her ongoing role in the life of the Church. This explanation will explore the Legion of Mary's teaching on Mary's relation to the Eucharist, highlighting the scriptural, theological, and spiritual foundations for this devotion.

Mary, Mother of the Eucharist

Mary's relation to the Eucharist begins with her role as the Mother of Jesus, who is the Bread of Life (John 6:35). Mary's 'yes' to God's plan, as recorded in Luke 1:38, was the instrument by which Jesus, the Eucharist, was brought into the world. This act of obedience and surrender to God's will is the foundation of Mary's role in the Eucharist.

Mary's Care for the Eucharist

Mary cared for Jesus, the Eucharist, in her womb. Just as Mary nurtured and cared for Jesus during His earthly life, she continues to care for Him in the Eucharist. This care is not limited to the physical presence of Jesus but extends to His sacramental presence in the Eucharist.

Mary's Presence at the Last Supper

Mary was present at the Last Supper, where the Eucharist was instituted (John 13:1-30). Although not explicitly mentioned in the Gospel accounts, Mary's presence is implied by her role as the Mother of Jesus and her relationship with the Apostles. Her presence at this pivotal moment underscores her importance in the Eucharistic celebration.

Mary's Role in the Eucharistic Celebration

Mary's role in the Eucharistic celebration is one of mediation and intercession. She brings the faithful to Jesus, the Eucharist, and offers their prayers and sacrifices to Him. This role is rooted in her relationship with Jesus and her position as the Mother of the Church.

Devotion to the Eucharist

Devotion to the Eucharist promotes receiving Jesus in Holy Communion as a means of deepening one's relationship with Him. Mary is seen as the model of Eucharistic devotion, and her love and reverence for the Eucharist are held up as an example for all to follow.

In conclusion

The understanding of Mary's relation to the Eucharist is rooted in Scripture, Tradition, and the teachings of the Church. Mary's role as the Mother of Jesus, her care for the Eucharist, her presence at the Last Supper, and her ongoing intercession in the Eucharistic celebration all underscore the importance of her relation to the Eucharist. As the model of Eucharistic devotion, Mary encourages all to deepen their love and reverence for the Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian life.

December 8: Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary—Solemnity Patronal
Feast of the United States—Holy Day of Obligation
c. 15 BC
Patron Saint of the United States, clothmakers, clothworkers, coopers, upholsterers, the Amazon rainforest, and numerous dioceses, cities, and countries

Quote:
We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful. ~From the Apostolic Constitution issued by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854

Reflection: In 1854, Pope Pius IX issued an apostolic constitution called Ineffabilis Deus by which he declared the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be a dogma of faith. This definition was a response to the longstanding devotion and theological consensus that had built up over the centuries. By declaring a dogma of faith, the Holy Father used his highest papal teaching authority, binding every Catholic to accept this teaching.

Ineffabilis Deus begins by stating that the creation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was in the mind of God from all eternity. She is the Father’s “singular delight,” and “under God, one cannot even imagine anything greater, and which, outside of God, no mind can succeed in comprehending fully.” This statement should leave us with a profound faith in the Immaculate Conception and an acknowledgment of the great and incomprehensible mystery we celebrate. Only in Heaven, as we behold the Beatific Vision, will our minds also behold the beauty and profound mystery of God’s greatest act of creation in the person of the Mother of God. Her life is not an end in itself. She is not worshiped. She is not God. She is, however, to be loved and honored in a singularly unique way, for she is God’s most glorious creation and will be honored as such forever.

The first thing we must know about our Immaculate Mother is that she needed a Savior, just as all humans do. Her Savior is her Son, just as He is our Savior. However, in her, salvation was given “by a singular grace and privilege.” We are saved by the washing away of original sin through baptism. The Blessed Virgin Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception. Her salvation transcended time in that the merits of salvation won by her Son Jesus’ Incarnation, death, and resurrection saved her from original sin at the very moment of her creation.

Mary’s role is first alluded to in the book of Genesis. We read about the fall of Adam and Eve, introducing Original Sin into human nature, thus requiring a Savior. Genesis 3:15 presents what many have called the Protoevangelium or “First Gospel” because, in mysterious language, it presents Christ as the New Adam and the Blessed Virgin Mary as the new Eve: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel.” The “enmity” between the serpent and the “woman” reveals Mary’s complete opposition to the evil one and to sin. The “offspring” is Jesus and He will crush the head of satan, destroying sin and evil forever. This passage also reveals that Jesus invites His mother to participate in this act of salvation in a unique way. “They will strike at your head…” implying both Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary overcame sin and satan together, by the power of God, but through the motherhood of Mary, the new mother of all the living and the mother of those in the new order of grace.

The Blessed Virgin Mary has also been traditionally seen as the new Ark of the Covenant. The first Ark was a sacred vessel that contained the Ten Commandments, manna, and Aaron’s rod. The Ark was a symbol of God’s divine presence that only the High Priest could approach once a year after rigorous purification rituals. The Blessed Virgin Mary, being the new Ark of the Covenant, should also be treated with the greatest veneration, for she bore the divine within her womb and He came forth from her own body. Only the Great High Priest, Jesus her Son, could dare to approach and dwell within her.

At the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel came to the Virgin and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” (Luke 1:28). This passage points to the Immaculate nature of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To be “full of grace” affirms the fact that grace so permeated Mary’s soul that sin had no place within her. Not only was she created free from sin, she also remained sinless throughout her life through the merit of her ongoing assent to God. Her prayerful response to the archangel was not only her response at that moment but was her continuous response to God throughout her life, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

From at least the seventh century, churches in the East celebrated in the liturgy Mary’s conception in Saint Anne’s womb. The Church in the West soon followed, emphasizing the immaculate nature of her conception. In the fifteenth century, Pope Sixtus IV approved a liturgical celebration for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and then extended that feast to the entire Western Church. In the centuries that followed, successive popes issued clearer teachings in support of the definition of the Immaculate Conception. Because of this ongoing and deepening definition of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Pius IX lifted this teaching to the highest level possible when he issued Ineffabilis Deus in 1854.

If we turn again to the beginning of that constitution in which the Holy Father said that “no mind can succeed in comprehending fully” the Blessed Virgin Mary, then we will realize that the little we know and understand about her remains a deep mystery that we will only fully comprehend in Heaven. Therefore, as we honor the Immaculate Conception and Mary’s immaculate nature, we also must anticipate a continual unfolding of who she is. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was not the end but the beginning. After that pronouncement, subsequent popes have continued to deepen their teaching on her. In 1904, Pope Pius X spoke of Mary as the Mediatrix of Graces. In 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven; in 1954, he established the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. Vatican II spoke of Mary as Mother of the Church and the Mediatrix of Grace.

As we celebrate this great Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, try to ponder the incomprehensible nature of the Mother of God. Knowing that she is an impenetrable mystery will help us honor her with the reverence and awe she deserves. The best news of all to ponder is that this perfect creation of God is not a distant icon to adore, she is our own caring mother, a mediatrix of God’s grace. Her tender care for her children will never waver, and her intercession will always bring to us all good things we need to achieve salvation.

Prayer: Most holy Mother, you are the Immaculate Conception, God’s most precious treasure and His singular delight. To your intercession and mediation I entrust my life. Take me to your Son and pour forth His grace upon me and upon the whole world. I entrust to you every care, concern, confusion, struggle, and cross. I turn to you for every grace of faith, hope, and love from Heaven, so that I can become more fully conformed to the image of your Son Who alone is the Savior of the World. Mother Mary, the Immaculate Conception, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.

✝️ THE SACRED PLACE IN THE CHURCH ALMOST NO ONE TALKS ABOUT 😳🔥
______________
Everyone knows the altar.
Everyone notices the tabernacle.
Everyone sees the pews, the statues, the sanctuary lamp.

But there is one place in the church
that almost nobody talks about…
yet your soul has stood there every single Mass.

It is not the altar.
Not the ambo.
Not the confessional.

It is the threshold.

Yes, the doorway.
The place you walk through without looking twice.
The few inches of holy ground between the outside world
and the house of God.

Most Catholics step over it casually.
Heaven does not.

Because spiritually, the doorway of the church
is not just an entrance.
It is a battle line.
A crossing.
A moment where two worlds meet.

✝️ 1. The Door is a Border Between Realms

Outside the church:
noise, pressure, distraction, temptation, pride, hurry.

Inside the church:
silence, grace, angels, the Word, the Eucharist.

When your foot crosses that line,
you are literally stepping out of one spiritual atmosphere
and entering another.

Every Mass begins with a victory:
You crossed the border.

✝️ 2. The Door is Where Your Guardian Angel Takes Over

The Fathers of the Church taught that angels
wait at the church doors during every liturgy.

Why?

Because at the door,
your angel prepares you to stand before God.

Every time you enter,
he leads you from earthly thoughts
into heavenly attention.

You never cross alone.

✝️ 3. The Door is a Symbol of Christ Himself

Jesus said:
“I AM THE DOOR.” (John 10:9)

So when you enter the church building,
you are walking through the One who gives life,
the One who leads to the Father,
the One who brings you into the presence of God.

Every entrance into church
is a small reminder of your entrance into salvation.

✝️ 4. The Door is a Silent Confession

Without saying a word,
crossing the church threshold says:

“I am leaving the world behind.”
“I am coming to meet God.”
“I am stepping into grace.”

It is repentance.
It is longing.
It is surrender.

Your body preaches it even if your mouth says nothing.

✝️ 5. At the Door, Heaven Opens and Earth Answers

Think of this:

Before you kneel…
before you sing…
before the priest even begins the Mass…
the first sacred act is already done.

You walked in.

And Heaven saw it.

Heaven honored it.

Heaven welcomed you.

Because the door is the meeting point —
the quiet miracle —
the unnoticed moment where ordinary life
gives way to sacred mystery.

So next time you walk into church,
don’t rush.
Don’t enter without thinking.

Pause.

You are crossing the doorway of the King.
You are stepping into God’s throne room.
You are walking into eternity’s embrace.

And you are standing on a sacred place
almost no one talks about…
but Heaven never ignores.

🙏 God bless you

MARY OUR MOTHER, VIRTUES OF PERFECTION
Mary is the Mother of the church not only because she is the Mother of Christ and his most intimate associate in the new economy when the Son of God took a human nature from her, that he might in the mysteries of his flesh free man from sin but also because she shines forth to the whole community of the elect as a model of the virtues.
No human mother can limit her task to the generation of a new man. She must extend it to the function of nourishing and educating her offspring. Just so the Blessed Virgin Mary, after participating in the redeeming sacrifice of the Son, and in such an intimate way as to deserve to be proclaimed by him the mother not only of his disciple John but, may we be allowed to affirm it of mankind which he in some way represent, now continues to fulfil from heaven her maternal function as the cooperator in the birth and development of divine life in the individual souls of redeemed men.
This is a most consoling truth which by the free consent of God the All-Wise, is an integrating part of the mystery of human salvation, therefore it must be held as faith by all Christians.

APOSTOLATES IN THE COMMUNITIES
The laity are a chosen race, a holy priesthood, also called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. It's their specific vocation and mission to express the Gospel in their lives and there by to insert the Gospel as leaven into the reality of the world in which they live and work.
The great forces which shape the world politics, the mass media, science, technology, culture, education, industry, and work are precisely the areas where lay people are especially competent to exercise their mission. If these forces are guided by people who are true disciples of Christ, and who are at the same time, fully competent in the relevant secular knowledge and skill, then indeed will the world be transformed from within by Christ's redeeming power.

A MESSAGE FROM REV. FR. Thaddeus Akpa TO LEGION OF MARY

Mary, Mother of Mercy, The Eyes of Mercy

We call Mary, "Mother of Mercy," in the traditional prayer:
Hail Holy Queen,
Mother of Mercy,
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope ...
This beautiful hymn, Salve Regina, is one of the most famous Gregorian chants in the world.
It is recorded that the Salve Regina was recited by Columbus' men the evening before they sighted the New World the next morning.

The entire life of Mary was patterned after the presence of mercy made flesh. M.V. No. 24. Let us address her says the Pope in the words of the Salve Regina, a prayer ever ancient and ever new, so that she may never tire of turning her merciful eyes upon us, and make us worthy to contemplate the face of mercy, her son Jesus. This hymn is said to be a favourite of our Lady herself by testimony of those who have reportedly seen her in visions.

One account concerning this claim relates a vision St. Dominic had. He was entering a corridor of the monastery to resume his midnight prayer vigil when he chanced to raise his eyes and saw three beautiful ladies approach him. He knelt before the principal lady and she blessed him. Even though St. Dominic recognized her, he begged her to tell him her name. The lady replied: "I am she whom you invoke every evening: and when you say, Eia ergo, advocata nostra. I prostrate myself before my Son, entreating Him to protect you." (From the Life of St. Dominic, Lacordaire).

Today this prayer is one of the final Marian Antiphons or anthems that conclude compline in the Divine Office and it is also used in conjunction with the Rosary. With the recitation of this anthem, our prayers coming through her hands will be doubly acceptable to her Son, and we shall be the sooner heard for the reverence He has for His Mother.
