Why Foundation Depth Matters, Especially in Different Soil Types

When it comes to construction, foundation depth isn’t just a number, it’s the backbone of your entire building. One of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring the type of soil they are building on. Let me break this
Let’s say you’re building on a sandy soil, you’ll need a deeper foundation because sandy soil doesn’t hold load as well as laterite or clay. The foundation might need to go as deep as 1.2m – 1.5m depending on the load of the building.

Now imagine building on lateritic soil (the reddish type common in many parts of Nigeria), it’s more stable. Here, your foundation might be safe at 0.9m – 1.2m, especially for a single-storey building.

But if it’s clay soil, it gets tricky. Clay swells and shrinks, so you’ll need a very well-reinforced and deeper foundation or a pile foundation depending on the structure.

They manage the budget, the timelines and spend much of their time liaising between the construction professionals, tradesmen and the client. Project Managers will also be responsible for safety, time management and cost control throughout the design and build phase. They are the ones to hand over the keys once the project is complete.
