Does It Make Any Difference What Church We Belong To?
Does it make any difference what church we are a member of? Is one just as good as the next? Newspapers today tell us to "Join the Church of your choice." The selection is amazing! There are large groups, small groups, charismatic groups, not so charismatic groups. Groups who use creed books, groups who don't. Groups who use the Old and New Testament, groups who use only one or the other. The question we need to ask is not, which group do I want to assemble with, but rather, which group would God have me assemble with?
CRITERIA NOT TO USE IN FINDING A PLACE OF WORSHIP:
• Popularity. Size is no sign of faithfulness. Remember the 12 spies who went down to Canaan? The majority reported they could not conquer the land. The majority was wrong. We must be careful of majorities. The majority of the time, they are wrong.
• Convenience. I used to go to a religious group which was 2 doors down from my home. It was conveniently located, but doctrinally wrong!
• Comfort. We all like a good atmosphere, comfortable seats, etc., but if these are the things that cause us to go to a certain place of worship, we might as well stay at home.
• Habit. The saddest thing to hear someone say is, we've always gone there. You shouldn't do something because you always did it that way, rather, because it is right to do.
• I like the preacher. Dangerous!!! Peter warns of teachers who have flowery words, and appeal to us greatly. He called the false prophets! Listen to the message, not the messenger.
CRITERIA TO USE IN FINDING A PLACE OF WORSHIP:
• A Proper Relationship To Christ.
o He is the builder (Mt 16:18). Note, He only built one. Truth is an absolute!
o He is the head (Col 1:18). His doctrine should be taught and practiced (Mt 15:8).
o He purchased it (Ac 20:28). Ownership is His, therefore all glory goes to Him.
• Established At The Right Time And Place.
o Jerusalem, AD 33, on the day of Pentecost (Ac 2:1-47)
o Note, for membership, God added to the church, man did not join, nor was he voted in!
• Worship Is According To The New Testament Pattern.
o Lord's Table each Sunday (Ac 20:7). Note, each week has a first day!
o Give as prospered (1 Cor 16:1-2; 2 Cor 9:6-7). Note, a free will offering, not tithing.
o Sing (Eph 5:19). We have no scriptural authority to use instruments in worship.
o Pray to the Lord (Mt 6:9; Ac 7:59), not to saints.
o Study God's word (Ac 2:42), no other doctrines, creeds (Gal 1:6-9)
• Same Plan Of Salvation Taught As The 1st Century (NT) Church.
o Faith (Heb 11:6; Ro 10:17). A good start, but we can't stop here!
o Repentance (Lk 13:3; Ac 17:30-31). Turn away from sins (Ro 6:1-2).
o Confession (Mt 10:32-33; Ro 10:10). The church is built upon it (Mt 16:16).
o Baptized (Mk 16:16; Ac 2:38; 1 Pe 3:21)
o Live faithful (Rev 2:10). One can fall from grace (1 Ti 4:1ff; 2 Ti 4:10; 2 Pe 2:20ff).
• A Scriptural Name.
o 1 Co 1:2; Ro 16:16. If we are to be the New Testament church, we ought to use New Testament names.
o Note, just having a scriptural name does not make a church the New Testament church, just as one calling himself a Christian does not make him a Christian. Obedience to the will of God is key.
o Simply called Christians (Ac 11:26; 26:28; 1 Pe 4:16). No fancy names used, just Christian.
Finding the right church is a life and death decision (Mt 16:26). Sincere faith is not evidence of salvation, but rather obedience to the perfect will of God is. Jesus only established one church. Let us be sure that we have been added to that church! We have the Scriptures, the standard, the measuring rod. Let that be what determines what churches are of Christ or not!

Does It Matter What Name We Wear in Religion?
There are hundreds of different churches in the world today. There are Catholics, Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Pentecostals, and many more. Does it matter what name we wear in religion? Many say, "No, we can wear any name we choose." However, if we would read our Bibles and follow them we would not just wear any name we choose. Could we call God by any name we choose and be pleasing to Him? Could we Him George or Tom or Sam and by doing this give Him the respect He deserves? No, we could not; God's name and Christ's name are divinely-given names.
In Isaiah 62:2 it was prophesied that God's people would be given a new name, and that name would be a name give by the Lord. Isaiah 62:2 is fulfilled in Acts 11:26 when the Bible says that the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. This was not a name they chose but a divine name that God chose. In Acts 4:10-12 Peter and John healed a man in the name of Jesus Christ. Verse 12 says "Neither is there salvation in any other: For there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
Paul said in Philippians 2:9 that God had highly exalted Jesus and given Him a name which is above every name. Christ purchased the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28). Since the church is His it should wear His name. In Matt. 16:13-19 after Peter confessed that Jesus was the Christ, Jesus promised to build "His church." If it belongs to Christ, it should wear His name.
In I Corinthians 1:10-13 Paul said that there should be no division among the followers of Christ. Different religious names promote religious division. Read I Cor. 1:10-13—Paul asked these people if they were baptized in the name of Apollos, Cephas, or Paul. He also asked if these men were crucified for them. Paul made the argument here that we should wear the name in religion of the one who died on the cross for our sins. If everyone would do this, we would all wear the same name. The church belongs to Christ; He purchased it with His blood. It is His bride and should wear His name—not the name of another.
The Bible says in Romans 16:16, " ...The churches of Christ salute you." There is Bible authority to call ourselves "church of Christ." There is no Bible authority for the names men have invented such as Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, and others. These manmade names do not give Christ glory and praise. Christ's name is above every name (Phil. 2:9-11). If we will follow the New Testament, we will wear Christ's name, and not these manmade names. Does it matter what name we wear in religion? Yes, it matters! Wear the name of Christ. There is salvation in no other name (Acts 4:12).

DAILY DOSES OF FAITH: Why the Church of Christ is not a Denomination.

".... In looking through some of my study material, I saw an article which I thought might be of timely significance right now. It was written by Dr. Young:

When we read about the church on the New Testament, we are impressed with the fact that it is not a denomination or sect or religious party. This church is simply the "called out", the saved ones who have obeyed the gospel of Christ and are walking in the way or Christ. Whenever the Word of God is preached and men believe and obey its message, you will find the undenominational church of Christ! Jesus said, 'The seed is the word' (Luke 8:11). In our modern world, the word 'denomination' has become synonymous with (confused with) the Bible word 'church'. This is most unfortunate because the church which fits the New Testament description must be 'non-denominational.'

It will have no head but Christ, no earthly headquarters, no requirements for admission other than those laid down by Christ, no name but the names used in the New Testament; no organization other than the simple order described in the Scriptures. Christ wants all His followers to be just Christians, nothing more and nothing less. He does not want them divided into 'sects', 'denominations,' parties,' with rival names, creeds, loyalties, and organizations. The church of Christ is non-sectarian. It is the body of Christ, the kingdom of christ, the bride of Christ. Whenever men obey the gospel of Christ as they did on Pentecost, God adds them to the church (Acts 2:47). As Christians they are bound together by their common loyalty to Christ and love for the brethren everywhere.

In recent years the home has been assaulted by forces of evil. Today the church is being assaulted by the forces of confusion. To survive in these chaotic times, we have to keep our eye on Christ as our example and His word for our guidance. We need to respect the silence of the scripture as much as the spoken word... Only a thorough knowledge of the word will suffice.
Love you all, Al."

AN EXPLANATION OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
It is not a stylish or proud church. You will find it is very simple. It does not propose to feed vanity with a display of vain things. Its aim is not to amuse or enter- tain those who attend it services. It exists in your community simply as a body of Christians pointing all who look its way to Jesus Christ as God's Son, the hope of the world. Its doors are open to those who from the quiet depths of their hearts would out to God in simple worship and obedient living.
You may be surprised to find that there isn't much ready-made for you in this church. There is no ready-made creed such as you find in many places. You take the Bible and make it your guide as you believe everything it teaches. There are no ready-made order of worship. Each church or our Lord arranges its own order in harmony with the items of worship described in the New Testament. There is no ready-made music. Everyone makes his own, from his heart, as early Christians did. Eph. 5:19.
You may be surprised to find that this church is free under Christ as its only Head. It has no organic connection with any other congregation, but is bound by a unity of faith with all those everywhere who "speak where the Bible speaks and are silent where the Bible is silent."
In this church every Christian is a priest. There is no distinction between the "clergy" and "laity." We believe that all Christians are called "to be saints." Their gifts and functions may differ, but their status before the Lord is the same. Jesus Christ is our High Priest.
This church is the outward manifestation of the deep conviction in many hearts that simple apostolic Chritianity can be produced today by the same living Word which produced it in the first century. We do not claim perfection as human beings. We were all sinners who were saved by the grace of God upon our trusting obedience to the gospel. We seek to humbly serve Jesus and to urge others to do so. Our aim is to glorify God by exalting Christ in our lives and teaching. Truly, to be a free Christ- ian, without dictation from man, is a glorious privilege.

The Blood of Christ

“Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins” (Heb. 9:22). The old levitical system was a very bloody system (Lev. 1-5). Yet, the blood of bulls and goats could never really take away sin (Heb. 10:3-4). How thankful we should be that Jesus was willing to shed His blood once for all for sin (Heb. 10:12). Notice just how important the blood of Christ is to our salvation.
Jesus’ blood removes sin from our life. When Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper He said, “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Mt. 26:28). When Jesus was on the cross “…one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out” (Jn. 19:34). It was at this point in time when a fountain was opened for cleansing and sin (Zech. 13:1). Without the shedding of Jesus blood we would not have forgiveness.
Jesus’ blood redeems us to God. The Apostle Paul said, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Eph. 1:7). Paul later said that we are brought near to God through the blood of Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:13). The word “redeem” literally means to “buy back.” Before Jesus shed His blood we were enslaved to sin (Rom. 6:17-18). Only through the blood of Christ could we be brought back into a right relationship with God (Jn. 14:6).
Jesus’ blood brings us into a peaceful relationship. Paul told the Colossian Christians that Jesus made peace through the blood of His cross (Col. 1:20). Man and God had been severed because of man’s sin (Isa. 59:1-2). We were at enmity with God (James 4:4). Yet, through the blood of Christ we can have the peace of God which surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:6-8).
Jesus blood is essential to having a relationship with God. Have you had your spirit washed in the blood of Christ? We are told in Revelation 1:5 that Jesus loves us and is willing to wash us form our sins in His own blood (Rev. 1:5). At what point do we contact the blood of Christ? We contact the blood of Christ in the watery grave of baptism. Paul was told to “arise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16). Since it is the blood of Christ that cleanses our sins, and that happens during one’s baptism we must conclude that baptism is the point at which we reach the blood of Christ (Acts 2:38; Mk. 16:16). At the McLish Avenue church of Christ we would love to help you become a child of God. If you would like to have a Bible study or need any spiritual help, we would be glad to assist you. May God help each of us to realize the importance of the blood of Christ!

Instrumental Music In Worship Is Sinful

Kenneth E. Thomas
Mechanical instrumental music in worship is wrong (SINFUL) because of at least the following reasons:
1. Its Use Does Not Respect The “Silence” of the Scriptures (I Peter 4:11).
The oracles of God have been revealed, i.e. His Word (Jude 3; Heb. 1:1-2; II John 9; Eph. 3:1-6; I Cor. 2:1-13). The New Testament is called the “Perfect Law of Liberty” (James 1:25).
In the New Testament we find no mention of mechanical instruments, so, they cannot be used and still “speak as the oracles of God.” Likewise, we cannot claim to believe in the “perfect law of Christ” while using something unauthorized therein (Luke 6:46)! See II Timothy 3:16-17 and II Peter 1:3.
Mechanical instruments in worship cannot be defended as a part of the revelation Jesus called “all truth” (John 16:12-13) because they are not mentioned therein!
The will of Christ is based on what it says, not on what it does not say (Heb. 7:14)! Why were there no priests from the tribe of Judah under the Old Testament? Because Moses spake nothing about such, that’s why! Men must learn to respect the silence of God as well as “when” and “what” He says.
2. Its Use Violates The Principle of “Walking by Faith” (II Cor. 5:7).
“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Rom. 10:17; John 6:44-45; Matt. 28:19-20; Rom. 10:14-15).
Since not one passage of Scripture authorizes the use of mechanical instruments of music in worship, it cannot be an act of faith. Paul says “whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Rom. 14:23). No act can possibly be an act of faith without any Scriptural instruction. See II John 9.
The New Testament authorizes singing (Matt. 26:30; Mark 14:26; Acts 16:25; Rom. 15:9; I Cor. 14:15; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; Heb. 2:12; Heb. 13:14; James 5:13). Singing is vocal music. Playing is mechanical instrumental music. That is adding another “kind” of music. It is impossible to obey the Lord’s commands in these passages by playing a mechanical instrument! One must sing to do what is commanded in them. Don’t forget Cain as well as Nadab and Abihu as you consider your actions in this matter. See Revelation 22:18-19 and Leviticus 10:1-4.
3. Mechanical Instruments Violate the Principle of Promoting Unity Among Followers of Christ.
All Christians are encouraged to “have the mind of Christ” (Phil. 2:5). If in fact we do, we will desire and work for unity among His followers based on His apostle’s words just as He prayed we should (John 17:17,20-21). We will be content to “abide in the apostle’s doctrine” as did early disciples (Acts 2:42). Paul, an inspired apostle, admonishes us to “all speak the same thing and have no divisions among us” (I Cor. 1:10). He calls man-made divisions a sign of “carnality,” not of spirituality in (I Cor. 3:1-3).
Wherever the instrument has been introduced into assemblies among brethren, it has caused division. Those who opt for its use admit that the Scriptures are silent about its use. They also admit that it is scriptural not to use it. They still, however, attempt to justify its use as an expedient. Some equate it with a song leader, lights, notes, the parts such as bass, alto, tenor or soprano. The fact is that when we use all of those things which are indeed aids to singing, all we have done is to SING! When an instrument is added, you have another kind of music. See?
There are three rules by which we may determine an expedient: It must be lawful (II John 9; Col. 3:17). It must not destroy the faith of brethren (I Cor. 1:8-13; 10:32-33). It must not cause division (John 17:20-21; Eph. 4:1-2; I Cor. 1:10).
4. Mechanical Instruments Destroy The Fundamental Principle of Worship. We Must Worship in Truth! (John 4:24)
The standard of truth is God’s word (John 8:31-32; 17:17).
The truth only authorizes singing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16).
Instrumental music in worship belongs to the doctrines and commandments of men which Christ Jesus says renders one’s worship vain (Matt. 15:9).
