The items inside the Ark which were the manna, Aaron’s rod, and the tablets of the Covenant were not just sacred objects; they were evidences of Israel’s rebellion against God.
Each one represented a specific category of sin.
The tablets represented the violation of God’s command, because Israel broke His law.
Aaron’s rod represented the rejection of God’s authority, because they rebelled against the leadership He had appointed.
The manna represented the rejection of God’s provision, because they despised what He supernaturally supplied.
These three categories form the same argument Paul later establishes in the book of Romans: that all men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and therefore require the sacrifice of Christ.
But God did not leave the evidence of sin exposed.
He instructed that the Mercy Seat be built over the Ark.
This was symbolic. It represented mercy covering guilt.
Legally, the evidence remained inside, but mercy sat above it.
This pointed to Christ.
Jesus did not offer animals; He offered Himself.
It was not that sin did not exist. It was that God, in Christ, chose not to remember our sins anymore.
Mercy did not deny guilt. Mercy covered it.
Because of this, Satan has no legal jurisdiction over the believer.
His jurisdiction would have been guilt.
But guilt has been legally dealt with through Christ.
To illustrate: a police officer in Nigeria cannot travel to Ghana and enforce Nigerian law. It is outside his jurisdiction.
In the same way, Satan may speak, accuse, and attempt intimidation, but he has no legal authority to enforce anything, because guilt has been removed.
Scripture says:
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1
And also:
Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel. Numbers 23:23
Many people are not destroyed because enchantments exist.
They are destroyed because they lack the knowledge of God’s covering.
Knowledge establishes confidence in what Christ has already legally accomplished.
