Topic: Food as Medicine - God's Plan for a Stronger and Healthier You

Scripture: Genesis 1:28-29, 9:3; Daniel 1:12-15

Everytime we eat, we are either fighting or feeding a disease.

Science has shown the benefits of fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, seeds and nuts, whole grains and legumes; these possess God-given medicinal properties that improve our health. Our plates should have 50% vegetables, 25% protein and 25% starch. We should learn to keep a diet when we are healthy not when we are sick.

Red meat is high in saturated fat and can trigger inflammation.

Processed food such as refined sugar and unhealthy fats contribute to sickness due to additives and preservatives. Lifestyle disease such as diabetes are also linked to poor eating habits.

Below are practical steps to make food your medicine;

1. Start with small changes: add more food and veggies to your meals.

2. Replace unhealthy snacks with nuts, seeds or smoothies.

3. Drink more water and herbal teas instead of sugary drinks.

4. Cultivate the habit of fasting at least once a week.

5. Encourage meal planning and cooking at home using whole foods.

Tips for health and wellness;

1. Take vegetable juice especially green vegetables - this will not spike up your sugar levels.

2. Eat Fruits - include a mix of high fiber fruits (apple, pear and banana) and antioxidants-rich fruits (berries, orange, lemon, grape, tangerine).

3. Balanced Meals - Ensure you get enough protein, healthy fats and fiber alongside fruits and green juices.

4. Hydration - Drink water throughout the day in moderation.

5. Fasting - Fast from cooked foods for at least 1 day in a week, preferably Tuesdays and Fridays.

Sermon Title: The Things that make for Joy(5) - Be Grateful

Preacher: Pastor Steve Oricha

Scripture: 1st Thessalonians 5:16-18, Ephesians 5:20, Nehemiah 8:10

Gratitude is a profound sense of appreciation for others, acknowledging and valuing the blessings, goodness, and kindness we receive from both God and people.

When you lack gratitude, it's often because you believe you have everything under control and are self-sufficient.

One of the things that hinders our gratitude is an entitlement mindset. We often believe we deserve certain things, but do we truly? Nothing is our right; everything we are and have is a result of God's grace. Whenever we follow God's commands, it's an act of obedience, and that obedience brings joy.

HOW BEING GRATEFUL UNLOCKS JOY

1. Gratitude is obedience to God's instruction, and obedience brings joy. It is difficult to find a grateful person that is not joyful

2. Gratitude creates a consciousness and awareness of God..

Anytime you step into gratitude it brings God's consciousness in the atmosphere. His presence brings joy. Psalm 16:11.

3. At the core of gratitude is perspective, how you look at things.

Gratitude shifts your focus from what you don't have to what you have. It reminds you that no matter how bad a situation is, there's always something to be grateful for.

4. Gratitude allows you to see good even in the midst of difficulties.

PRACTICAL WAYS TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE

1. Keep a Gratitude Journal - Psalm 103:1-2. Writing down the things you're grateful for each day helps you remember them, as it's easy to forget without documenting your gratitude.

2. Cultivate a Habit of Gratitude- Make it a practice to consistently thank God from your heart and express appreciation to others. Never take the good people do for you for granted. Always celebrate and thank those who have impacted your life while they're still with you.

The greatest expression of gratitude we can offer is thanking Jesus for sacrificing His life for us. We honor this act by accepting Him into our hearts as our personal Lord and Savior.
