Morning Charge
There is a popular saying that no one knows it all. And indeed, there are times when you can be in a fix, completely bereft of what to do. That is where counsel or advice comes in.
However, counsel could be a double-edged sword. That is, it could be good counsel that leads to a productive end or bad counsel that leads to a destructive end.
During the Persian empire when Ahasuerus was king, a proud official named Haman took strong dislike for Mordecai, a Jew who attended to the gate, because Mordecai refused to bow down to him. Angry and with a hurt ego, Haman was unsure how to deal with Mordecai.
Upon narrating this to his wife and friends, Haman added that all his achievements and lofty position in the kingdom was “…worth nothing as long as I see Mordecai the Jew just sitting there at the palace gate.” (Esther 5:13)
In verse 14 of the same chapter, ‘Haman's wife and friends said to him, “Have a gallows built about 22 meters high, and tomorrow morning ask the king to hang Mordecai there. Then later, you can have dinner with the king....” This seemed like a good idea to Haman, and he had the gallows built.’
It seemed like a good idea to Haman to have an innocent person hanged because he not only had a wicked heart, but that wicked heart was fed by bad counsel from his wife and friends.
In case you are unfamiliar with that story, God intervened through Queen Esther, one of the king’s wives (who was also a Jew), and Haman was the one hung in the gallows.
Why not pause and consider yourself for a moment: who do you receive counsel from? What is the moral compass and character of the people from whom you receive counsel? Do they provide you with godly counsel? Do they advise you from an objective point of view, even if it does not sit well with you?
In Deuteronomy 30:19, Moses said to the Israelites: “...I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” Now, that is a classic example of good counsel; one that will lead to peace, prosperity, good neighbourliness, and life.
So, take heed to yourself and from whom you receive counsel. It could literally just be the difference between life and death for you.
May God be in your day today 🤗🤗
