Prayer is a relationship between the soul and God. In prayer, we measure how we have responded to the invitation to love God in every way we can. As we develop and deepen our relationship with God, our bad side gives way to our godly side. A good prayer life brings about simplicity; humility; trust; faith and conversion. These qualities we see in the republican but are lacking in the Pharisee. The Pharisee, instead of praising God in his prayer, praises himself for his good behaviour. He proclaims himself righteous and holy even before God. He goes on to condemn a fellow man in God’s sight. In the ‘Our Father’, Jesus first and foremost acknowledges God’s holiness. Prayer is discovering our true self in God. We cannot claim to be perfect or holy before God. God knows us through and through. Holiness is attained through God’s grace and not by human effort or works only. Prayer makes us God’s friends and friends to others.

FOR PRAYER GROUPS ALL OVER THE WORLD, let them bring a blessing on themselves and the world, and may they grow in favour and numbers. Lord, hear us; as we pray to you we pray Oh Lord

TODAY’S REFLECTION
An important gesture at prayer is the raising of hands. The hand is that part of the body that we work with. It is used to receive things or show hospitality through a handshake. We normally pray, “Bless the work of our hands, O Lord.” We raise our hands to God when we desire to receive favours from him. When Moses’ hands are raised, God’s favour streams to the people of Israel. But when his hands are lowered, they begin to lose their battle until support comes. Our hands must be raised all the time, supported by a prayer of perseverance, so that God can pour his blessings on us. Prayer is effective when we cultivate perseverance. We should not grow weary in our prayer, lowering our hands. They must be raised in faith and total surrender. The widow raises her hands continually towards the unjust judge. We have to raise our hands continually and with determination towards our just and good judge.

St. Teresa of Jesus also known as St. Teresa of Ávila was born to a middle class Spanish family
As a child she always dreamed of being martyr or a hermit and loved to repeat the words 'forever and ever amen'
when she decided to become a religious she entered the Ávila's Carmelite convent but it was too comfortable, many nuns brought their social status into the cloister and had private kitchens, Oratories and guest rooms, Teresa was one of these
During the great Catholic reforms of the 1500's She decided to start her own convent which would distance itself from material wealth and benefits of social status. Her nuns wore no shoes and were limited to thirteen per convent and accepted no form of dowries nor endorsements. They were to be utterly poor, to fast, to mortify and to pray intensely. She practiced and expected her nuns to emulate, being ever more sociable and loved as she progressed.
She became the first female martyr to have her feast day extended to the universal church.
she was declared a Doctor of the church by Pope St. Paul in 1970.
She lived an exemplary life inspiring the likes of Saints Thérèse of Lisieux, Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Today we celebrate the last of the six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Considered as the most important series of Marian aspirations in the roman catholic church, the Blessed mother appeared on the 13th day of each month from May 13 to October 13, 1917 to the three shepherd children at Cova da Iria fields, portugal. On her first apparition she requested the children to pray the holy rosary, perform works of mortification for the conversion of sinners and requested for devotion to herself under the title Immaculate Conception.
The fatima message emphasizes Central truths and devotions of the Catholic faith: the Holy Eucharist, Penance, the Holy Rosary and Sacrifices.
Brain teaser: without browsing, what were the names of the three shepherd children
