FUNERAL PRAYER (SOLAATUL JANAZAH)
Bismillaahi Rahmani Raheem.
Praise be to Allaah (Lord of the universe)
Solaatul Janazah is a Fard Kifayah, and its procedure and details follow the sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him). It is strongly recommended that as many members of the Muslim community as possible should join the funeral procession and Solaatul Janazah:
Six Rights of a muslim over another.
Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (may peace and bleasings be upon him) said: "Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim. It was said to him: Messenger of Allaah, what are these? Thereupon he said:
When you meet him, offer him greetings.
When he invites you to a feast accept it.
When he seeks your council give him.
When he sneezes and says:" All praise is due to Allaah," you say Yarhamuk Allaah (may Allaah show mercy to you).
When he fails ill visit him.
When he dies follow his bier."
(Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
The following describes this Solaat briefly:
1️⃣ There is no Azan or Iqamah for Salat ul Janazah which is offered with the participants standing and with the body of the deceased placed in front of them. There are no Rukus or Sujud to be performed in Salat ul Janazah1
2️⃣ It is preferable if those offering Salat ul Janazah form an odd number of rows with the Imam standing in the front facing the body of the deceased. He should stand in line with the head of a male deceased and with the midriff of a female deceased.
3️⃣ In the case of multiple deceased persons, the bodies should be placed in a row with those of men nearest to the Imam.
4️⃣ If Solaatul Janazah is being offered in the open, it is not necessary for the participants to take off their shoes so long as they are visibly clean.
5️⃣ The deceased and those offering the Solaat must be Muslims, and the body of the deceased and those offering the Salat must be in a state of ceremonial cleanliness
(Wudu or Ghusl).
NOTE
👉It is not obligatory to offer Solaatul Janazah for children who die before attaining the age of puberty as is clear from the following.
Narrated by Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that Ibraheem (the son of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him), died when he was eighteen months old, and The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not pray (Janazah) for him."
(Sunan Abu Dawood).
👉It is permissible to offer Salaatul Janazah for a child including a miscarried fetus.
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for a fetus, the (Janazah) prayer may be performed for it, and Dua would be made that its parents be granted forgiveness and mercy."
(Musnad Imam Ahmad)
👉Solaatul Janazah must be offered even for a Muslim guilty of ignoring the teachings of Islaam (e.g, Solaat, Zakaat, prohibition of alcohol and Zina etc.). However, respected leaders of the community should refrain from participating in the Solaatul Janazah as a demonstration of their disapproval of the conduct of the deceased and as an admonition to others.
Summary of funeral prayer.
Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abu Aufa (May Allaah be pleased with him) that "While offering the funeral prayer of one of his daughters, he recited four Takbir, and after the fourth Takbir he continued standing for a time equal to an interval between two Takbir, praying for her and seeking forgiveness of Allaah for her.'' Then he said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so.''
(Al-Hakim)
1️⃣. The Imam should raise his hands, recite the Takbeer, and then tie his hands as in all other Solaats. Those offering the Solaat should follow..
After the First Takbeer: Recite Surat Al-Fatiha.
*1. Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
*2. Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen
*3. Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem
*4. Maaliki Yawmid-Deen
*5. Iyyaaka na'budu wa lyyaaka nasta'een
*6. Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem
*7. Siraatal-lazeena an'amta 'alaihim ghayril- maghdoobi 'alaihim wa lad-daaalleen
2️⃣- After the Second Takbeer: Recite solaat Al-Ibrahimiyya to the end,
Allaahumma salli 'alaa Muhammadin wa 'alaa 'aali Muhammadin, k**aa sallayta 'alaa 'Ibraaheema wa 'alaa 'aali 'Ibraaheema, 'innaka Hameedun Majeed. Allaahumma baarik 'alaa Muhammadin wa 'alaa 'aali Muhammadin, k**aa baarakta 'alaa 'Ibraaheema wa 'alaa 'aali 'Ibraaheema, 'innaka Hameedun Majeed.
3️⃣- After the Third Takbeer:
Then everyone should offer Dua al Mayyah (a prayer for the mercy of Allaah to be visited upon the deceased) silently according to how it was narrated from The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him).
Some of them are:
👉Allaahum-maghfir lihayyinaa, wa mayyitinaa, wa shaahidinaa, wa ghaa'ibinaa, wa sagheerinaa wa kabeerinaa, wa thakarinaa wa 'unthaanaa. Allaahumma man 'ahyaytahu minnaa fa'ahyihi 'alal-'Islaami, wa man tawaffaytahu minnaa fatawaffahu 'alal-'eemaani, Allaahumma laa tahrimnaa 'ajrahu wa laa tudhillanaa ba'dahu.
(O Allaah! forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our menfolk and our womenfolk. *O Allaah*, whomever you give life from among us give him life in Islam, and whomever you take way from us take him away in Faith. *O Allaah*, do not forbid us their reward and do not send us astray after them).
👉Allahummaghfir lahu, warhamhu, wa 'afihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya, k**a naqqaytath-thawbal-abyada minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khairan min darihi, wa ahlan khairan min ahlihi, wa zawjan khairan min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-Jannata, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhabil-qabri, wa min 'adhabin-nar [if the dead person is a woman, one should change the ending of certain words in this supplication from hu to ha]
(O Allaah! Forgive him, bestow mercy upon him, pardon him, accord him a noble provision and make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow and hail, purify him from sins as You have purified the white garment from soiling, give him a better abode in place of his present one, and a better family in exchange of his present one, and a better spouse in place of his present wife; admit him to Jannah and protect from the trial in the grave and punishment in the Hell)..
4️⃣- Then lastly after the Fourth Takbeer
Everyone should then offer prayers for the Muslim community in general, again silently.
5️⃣- And finally, end the prayer with Salaam to complete the Solaatul Janazah.
Salaam may be offered once to the right only, or once each to the right and then to the left as in all other prayers.
This would complete the Solaatul Janazah.
Convey/share the teachings of islam and gain reward.
