Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

No family without challenges

34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: โ€œThis child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.โ€ (Luke 2, NIV)
There is no family or human life without challenges. Today in Catholic liturgy we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Often when people hear of the Holy Family they have the wrong notion that the Holy family was without challenges. But that is not true.

They had their own share of troubles and challenges. Jesus was born during a time of census. His parents have to embarked on that difficult journey. He was born in a stable, an unusual place for human birth because there was no place in town. He was pursued at birth by Herod. The Holy Family have to run to Egypt for safety. At the age of 12 the parents searched for him and agonized until they found him. When he began his public ministry they had found him at home.

Joseph at first was troubled over the circumstances of Mary's pregnancy. He laboured as a carpenter. He underwent the pain and suffering of human labour. In the gospel stories, he probably died earlier as we no longer hear of him during most of Jesus's public ministry.

The prophecy of Simeon brought pain to the parents. What if it was your family member that Simeon prophesied pain and suffering. The Holy Family lived with death hovering over them. The gift of myrrh presented by one of the wise men already indicated death for Jesus. On many occasions the religious leaders attempted to kill Jesus. They were not really wealthy.
They lived as a poor peasant family.

Yet in spite of all the troubles that they had they were united, cooperated and shared their pains together. They lived holy and peaceful lives. They shunned quarrels and conflicts. They endured and persisted. They did not allow life problems to weigh them down. They are a true model of what a family should be. They lived in harmony. The Holy family was a virtuous family. They were charitable, kind, compassionate and merciful. They lived without complaining about life problems. But they often meditated over life.
Let us by like the Holy Family.

Prayer: Almighty Father, we receive grace to live like the Holy Family without complaining but patiently enduring all that comes to us. Give us the grace to share in one another's burdens and pain. Help us to be selfless. Help us to be obedient to authentic gospel values. See us through our troubles. Amen

Years ago in Mount Carmel Catholic church, a priest during his sermon told the congregation a story.

He said he was heading from Niger state to Lagos state and around Gwagwalada, Abuja he saw a young man hawking gala in that morning gridlock.

The priest wound down his glass and bought four sausage rolls from the energetic hawker.

His friend, a priest was surprised and said to him

"You ate before we left this morning, what's the need for the gala you bought? Are you hungry again?"

"No, he replied. I'm filled but I had to buy that gala from that young man. Did you see how athletic he is? He is trying to make a living in an honest way and I just want to support him.

That young man chases after moving vehicles and catches up with them just to sell one gala. Imagine what he'll do with all that energy if he doesn't sell enough gala to hold body and soul together and starts holding guns?"

That story has been stuck in my heart for over fifteen years now.

A friend from my street in Owerri told me something his father does every Monday.

His father is not Bill Gates or Aliko Dangote but according to him, every Monday morning, when his father enters a 'keke' to work, he pays for everyone in it - on Mondays only.

Sometimes, we can help keep the society sane and happy by doing little things - things we see as nothing.

That beautiful girl who sells pepper in the market can make do with your hundred naira patronage.

If she sells airtime and you can get airtime from her, do it. Banks are rich already. Your patronage can keep her away from the roadside on cold nights.

You don't have to drive all the way to the mall to buy cucumber and apples, that woman at the junction may be hoping on your patronage to feed her children tonight.

If you buy chicken in the market and can afford to pay hundred naira to that young man who wields a sharp knife and knows how to use it, patronise him.
Encourage him, your patronage may take him back to the market tomorrow rather than make him consider what he can do with that knife tomorrow morning.

Add some value to the lives around you, give people hope and reasons to push on.

Greet the girl over the counter at that office, smile back at her, she's human.

Say hi or thank the concierge who opened the door for you at an eatery, he's human too.

Someone said to me months ago "you are the miracle someone is waiting for".

So I am saying to you to you too, you are the miracle someone is waiting for.

Stop holding back something you can freely add to the lives around you, do the little you can.

Be a miracle, happen to someone today.

May love never depart from your corner.

*DO NOT IGNORE*
*DO NOT IGNORE*
*DO NOT IGNORE*

You may not have the platform you need to touch lives. But you can always be a blessing through whatever platform that comes your way.
This is one.

Little Abraham needs your help.

O what great pleasure it will be to see him play with other kids in school.
O what great pleasure it will be to see him grow up normally like you and I.

I try to think of what this little boy is currently going through and my heart bleeds.

He was booked for operation last month but funds prevented it from happening.

For 4 days, little Abraham couldn't use the toilet. While we all stayed at home and grumbled because businesses and physical outdoor activities were hindered, little Abraham and his parents battled and hoped to rather experience the lockdown at home than spending the little gathered on admission in the hospital.

We want little Abraham to have this operation by next week Saturday. I believe we can all make this happen.... Our #500, #1000, #2,000, #5000.... Etc...

Give your widows mite...
Say a word of prayer as well that this doesn't just come to pass, but that it comes out 100% successful.

Account name: NADIGIGS CHILD INITIATIVE
Account number: 3149331806
Bank name: Firstbank

Thank you so much for your anticipated practical show of love. We know that there is never a convenient time to give hence, we acknowledge your sacrifice for little Abraham and his family.

God bless you richly.....

I'm so grateful already cause I see us making this happen. ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™‡

Today, we remember our amiable and ever smiling Rev. Fr. John Mark Emuejevoke Ikpiki, who passed on this day, 12 years ago.
May the souls of Frs. Ikpiki and Akuirene, the souls of all departed priests, and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

On Saturday, the 29th of August, witnessed the dawn of a new beginning for the NFCS Drama Unit Alumni, Delta State University, Abraka Chapter, as six members were elected to officially occupy positions that would form the first-ever Executive Council of the Alumni.

The body, popularly called โ€œDUnit DELSUโ€, is a religious social group for graduated members of the Drama organizational body under the Nigeria Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS), St. Paul Catholic Chaplaincy (SPCC), DELSU Abraka Chapter, located within the Site II campus.

Prior to this date, a team of past Presidents, Directors and Socially Prominent members of the Organization, virtually came together to decide on how to establish a proper functioning structure for the Alumni body, which has virtually been in existence since March 6, 2012, and January 10, 2014, on the Facebook and WhatsApp social media platforms, respectively.

This meeting birthed (amongst others) the idea for a Leadership Council and thus an Electoral Committee was established to oversee this task.

The Electoral Committee, led by Mr. Lawrence Jerinil Nwabudike aka Jerrican, who was assisted by Cherish Okonta, Paul Akhere aka Ak and Desmond Idjai aka Lordduet, was instituted on...
