Kanuri Yerwa – Nigeria

Overview & Beliefs

The Kanuri Yerwa are a major subgroup of the Kanuri people, living primarily in northeastern Nigeria, especially around Borno State. They speak the Kanuri language and have a rich history linked to the former Kanem–Bornu Empire. Family honour, respect for elders, hospitality, and community solidarity remain central cultural values. Many work in farming, fishing, trading, education, civil service, and small businesses.

Nearly all Kanuri Yerwa are Sunni Muslims. Islam has shaped Kanuri society for centuries and is deeply integrated into family life, education, leadership, and community traditions. Following Christ often carries significant social and family consequences.

Although Christian ministry has been present in northeastern Nigeria for many years, the Kanuri Yerwa remain one of Nigeria’s largest unreached peoples, with very few known believers.

Key Challenges

* Long-established Islamic heritage
* Strong family and community expectations
* Security challenges affecting ministry in the region
* Limited number of mature indigenous believers
* Need for culturally appropriate discipleship resources

Barriers to the Gospel

* Fear of rejection and persecution
* Misunderstandings about Jesus and the Gospel
* Limited opportunities for meaningful relationships with Christians
* Social and religious pressures surrounding conversion
* Small evangelical witness

Prayer Points

1. Revelation of Christ: Pray that Kanuri Yerwa people will encounter Jesus through dreams, Scripture, media, and faithful believers.
2. Seekers: Ask God to lead sincere seekers to trustworthy Christians who can clearly share the Gospel.
3. Families: Pray that households will become open to hearing and believing the Good News.
4. Believers: Pray for protection, boldness, unity, and perseverance among Kanuri Christians.
5. Leaders: Ask God to raise up faithful indigenous leaders who will disciple future generations.
6. Church Growth: Pray for strong, multiplying churches that will spread throughout Kanuri Yerwa communities in northeastern Nigeria.

🌏✝️
How precious indeed is the soul of a man — so precious that the Lord of all the earth laid down His life for it. And because of this, the enemy fights with everything he has to claim it for himself. Would it not then be the Master’s delight to see His servants fully committed to winning souls for His Kingdom?

As we begin this new year, let us make soul winning our highest priority — whether in the mission field, our workplaces, our campuses, or in every area of our lives. Let us always remember the price that was paid for the soul of man, and do our very best to ensure that every soul around us hears and receives this Good News. In doing so, we bring joy to our Master’s heart. 🔥📣
