St Augustine's Anglican Church, Abonnema

St Augustine's Anglican Church, Abonnema The Anglican Church of God in Abonnema The seed of Christianity was sown in Elem Kalabari in 1874 by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther himself. F. D. C. W. E. St.

It was not until 1885 that a mission station, St. Andrew's church, Bakana was founded under the supervision of Rev. Garrick, who wasted no time in spreading the good message to Abonnema. The beginning though humble, was so encouraging that Archdeacon D. Crowther, hearing of the progress of the new Church, establish a parish in 1889 under the charge of Rev. Carew, who did acquire the present site f

or the mission. Augustine's Church, Abonnema from Chief Orubibi Douglas and Chief Tatayoyo Black-Duke. Church members grew steadily in Abonnema. But for the brief period of disruption arising from the ''Garick Braide Movement" the Anglican mission had made reasonable progress in Kalabari District and for the most of the 20th Century, St. Augustine's Church, Abonnema had remained the headquarters and the leader of the District. The Church has grown steadily over the years. Today, St. Augustine is the headquarter of Kalabari Central Archdeaconry. It also hosted the the 18th Synod of the Niger Delta Diocese on Thursday 24th - Sunday 27th April, 2003. May God continue to manifest himself in this very spiritually rich Church with a dedicated and selfless body of Christians. The Church has consolidated on her past gains to plant new churches and strengthen up older ones. Augustine's Church, under the leadership of the vicar, Ven. Rufus Tamunotonye Etire, JP, is trusting God to continue to make her maintain her leadership position in the Kalabari area and in the Diocese of the Niger Delta and be a strong voice for the Lord on local, national and international issues.

TO: AN AMAZINGLY FANTASTIC MOTHER.
I thank God for giving you the rare privilege of celebrating another mothering Sunday.
For me, this year’s event is symbolic for two reasons. Firstly, for the first time in many years I will not be physically present to celebrate with you. It is so regrettable. Secondly and fortunately too, while pondering over the likely psychological effect of my seeming inability to be with you on this auspicious occasion, the thought of writing this unprecedented note was conceived as a way of consoling myself for missing all the fun with which the day is loaded as usual.
My sincere and honest wish for you today as always is that God grants you the grace to be, not just another Mother but a good and God fearing Mother. Because these are the right features that make the virtuous woman so outstanding in the midst of the crowd.
I pray God grant you long life to celebrate more years of Blissful and purposeful Motherhood.
Please accept the little gift as a token of my love for you today as always.
IBI INGIBO, TAMUNO I BOMA.

(Sunday 10th – Saturday 16th March 2013)
SHOW GREATER LOVE
“Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for a child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).

Fellow Christians, the love of God in Isaiah 49 verse 15 should remind us of the unconditional love He had for his people Israel even though they say in verse 14 “The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us”. But unknown to them He has made provision for them by giving his only begotten Son Jesus Christ right from his mother’s womb to bring his people Israel back to him by commissioning Jesus Christ with honour and strength.

With the doubting mind of the people he explained his love to that of the love of the mother who can not forget her nursing child, but even if the mother may forget He says He will not forget his people realizing the tender and intimate love of the mother in taking care of the child.

God knows how mothers take care of their children right from conception to delivery they pass through many difficulties at times husband desert them or premature death of fathers leaving the caring to the mother alone.

People of god think about the love of mother bird or animal in caring for their young, which remind us of a story about the mother bird and her young ones. A fire started to burn in an area where a mother bird kept its young ones. The mother became frightened and started to fly around the nest helplessly. Eventually the fire caught up with the nest instead for the mother bird to fly away leaving its young ones to get roasted in the fire alone, the mother bird return to the nest and spread its feathers to cover the young ones. The fire burnt all of them to death together. What a sacrificial love manifested by the mother bird to her young ones.

My good people in Christ, mothers are very wonderful in providing and preparing for their children in Matt. 20:20-21. The mother of James and John –the sons of Zebedee showed great concern for the welfare of her sons in the kingdom of Christ that her two sons should occupy important positions in the kingdom of Christ thinking that one day Jesus will become the prime minister.

Also Bathsheba in 1Kings 1:11-13 make sure that her son Solomon succeeded David as king of Israel. The mother of Jesus cannot leave the son even to the cross were he was nailed with other mothers like Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene John 19:25.

Jesus our role model seeing the tender love from birth to the point of death, showed love in making provision for the mother by asking his disciples to take care of her. (Good Welfare Package). Good Christian husbands, sons, daughters what do you prepare for your wife and mothers in their life time not when they are dead, if we are not doing it can we at this special time change? Especially daughters’ in-laws show greater love to your mother in-laws because they really suffered for your husbands.
Happy Mothering Sunday

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
(Sunday 3rd – Saturday 9th March 2013)
“KEEP FAITH TO THE END”
“. . . If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son and in the Father” (1John 2:24b)

More often than not people had embarked on journeys and forgot their preliminary activities at the boarding park or airport. Sometimes even the prayers offered and they echoed the ‘Amen’ are forgotten just few kilometers from the take off point. Some started as Christians but ended the journey as infidels.

Our beloved Elder John in the text for our meditation this week, urges us to keep what we heard from the beginning of our Christian race. He urges us to remember the preliminaries of our journey which are the foundation, bedrock or benchmark of our faith. “So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Listen again to what John says, “If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father”. In other words, our continuing in Jesus Christ and His Father depends on our keeping faith with what we hear to the end - i.e. - what we have heard, believed and practiced from the beginning.

Beloved, as we continue our forty days wilderness journey with Jesus Christ, we are being reminded to remain steadfast and focused to the end. We should not allow our neighbours or circumstances to draw us back or weigh us down. For, to be drawn back or weighed down is to DISCONTINUE WITH JESUS CHRIST and be DISCONNECTED FROM DIVINE COMMONWEALTH.

Keep faith and stay connected.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
REVISIT YOUR ACT OF GIVING
There is a sticker that reads: “Givers never lack”. This is in line with that biblical principle, “One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper, he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed” (Prov. 11:24-25).

In Acts 20:35, Paul quoted Jesus and said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive'. A quotation from (Lamen. 46:7): one of rare instance of a saying of Jesus not found in the Canonical gospels.

Do you know why you are not making remarkable progress even as a “serious member” of the Church? Do you know why you have unconsciously made yourself a friend of poverty? It is because, “A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him” (Prov. 28:32).
This is another biblical principle. You have simply walked into it and identified with it. You need to revisit your act of giving in line with the following principles?
1. Giving must be done cheerfully (2 cor. 9:7)
2. Giving must be done systematically (1 Cor. 16:1-2)
3. Giving must be done proportionately (Deut. 16:17)
4. Giving must be done expectantly ( Eccl. 11:1)
5. Giving must be done sacrificially (2 Sam. 24:24-25)

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“Thou shalt not steal” (Exodus 20:15). 20th January, 2013.
It might sound funny to many starting a new year with this eight commandment, “You shall not steal”, But it may not be out of place to do so. This is because the Church of God would not want her members to be thieves. She does not want any to behave in some ways that will present him/her before God as a thief throughout this year 2013, being our year of RECOVERING ALL.
What is stealing? “Stealing is the act of taking or possessing something that belongs to someone else without the consent of the owner. It is the deliberate act of withholding what legitimately belongs to someone else. Thus, an employer who refuses or denies workers of their entitlement without justifiable reason is a thief.
A thief is anyone who arrogates to him/herself the glory due to God for his/her successes, achievements or accomplishments. God accuses anyone who refuses to tithe his/her income as a robber-thief. (See Malachi 3: 8, 9). Even the man who refuses to give offerings to God is also a thief.
Every man who snatches another man’s wife or a woman who snatches another woman’s husband is a thief.
God’s verdict on any thief is “curse” (Zech. 5:3).
