METHODIST REFLECTION FOR TODAY
TUESDAY 6th SEPTEMBER, 2022
THEME: TRIALS BUILD CHARACTER
PASSAGE: ROMANS 5: 1-5
( Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rom 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3 And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom 5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.)

The word 'trial' is often considered as pain, injustice or trouble but in a legal term, it means a proceeding in which an individual is taken through examination of evidence by a judge in order to determine guilt or innocence in the case of criminal or civil proceedings. On the other hand, it is a test of the performance, qualities or suitability of someone or something.
The above definitions imply that it is the character of the individual or product that is being put to test for his/its worthiness to be justified or to be acceptable as a standard quality. Therefore, we must not forget the fact that in the process of the trial or quality test, that which is examined also undergoes a thorough refining process.
In the same way, Christian trial is an act of testing our belief and trust in God. Our justification by faith brings us peace that overcomes every trial and persecution. Paul, who also suffered for His faith in God, counted it joy, knowing that rest comes after all. He knew that trials of faith make us stronger and more refined like gold that passes through fire. Trial may come in form of persecution or loss of job because of one's faith, but we must stand firm in Christ because there will be joy at the end of it all.
