On this day, 62 years ago, Pastor King (Sir) Isaac Babalola Akinyele, KBE, OBE — the revered Olubadan of Ibadanland and the first President of Christ Apostolic Church — joined the Church Triumphant, leaving behind a legacy that time has never been able to erase.
Born 18th, April 1882, King Isaac Babalola Akinyele stood as one of the most remarkable figures in the history of Ibadan and the Nigerian Christian faith. He was not only a traditional ruler but also a statesman, scholar, historian, educationist, nationalist, and a deeply devoted servant of God whose life became a bridge between tradition, modern leadership, and Christianity.
Before ascending the throne of the Olubadan, Akinyele had already distinguished himself in public service and community leadership. He was among the earliest educated elites in Ibadanland and played a vital role in the advancement of Western education, good governance, and social development in Yorubaland. His passion for learning and civilization earned him great respect among both the colonial administration and his people.
As Olubadan of Ibadanland, he became a symbol of peace, wisdom, justice, and humility. His reign was widely admired for stability and fairness at a time when Nigeria was passing through major political and social transitions. He ruled with dignity, compassion, and uncommon integrity, always placing the welfare of the people above personal interests.
One of the greatest landmarks of his life was his unwavering Christian conviction. In an era when many believed that traditional kingship and deep Christian commitment could not coexist, King Akinyele proved otherwise. He boldly brought the light of Christ into the palace and demonstrated that leadership could be exercised with godliness, humility, and moral discipline.
As the first President of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), he played a historic role in strengthening and stabilizing one of the foremost indigenous Pentecostal churches in Nigeria and Africa. His leadership gave credibility, structure, and spiritual direction to the church during its formative years. Through his influence, the gospel spread wider, and many lives were transformed.
He was also a lover of unity and reconciliation. Throughout his lifetime, he served as a bridge-builder among communities, religious groups, leaders, and families. His voice carried wisdom, and his counsel was highly respected across Yorubaland and beyond.
King Isaac Babalola Akinyele was equally known for preserving the history and culture of Ibadan. His intellectual contributions and historical records helped document the heritage, traditions, and evolution of Ibadanland for future generations. His works remain valuable references in Yoruba and Nigerian history today.
Indeed, his life was a shining example of what it means to combine faith with leadership, royalty with humility, and authority with service.
“The memory of the righteous is a blessing.” — Proverbs 10:7
Though he departed this earthly realm 62 years ago, his voice still echoes through history. His faith still inspires believers. His leadership still instructs rulers. His devotion still challenges Christians. His integrity still commands honor.
He was a king who served God wholeheartedly.
A pastor who carried the burden of souls.
A father who loved his people deeply.
A reformer who shaped history quietly but powerfully.
Today, generations continue to reap from the seeds he planted.
Your light still shines.
Your works still speak.
Your passion for God still sparkles.
Your legacy still lives on.
Rest on, great patriarch of faith and honor.
Rest on, royal servant of God.
Rest on, King Isaac Babalola Akinyele.
