Egba Diocese Marks St. Matthias Day, Celebrates Church of Nigeria Anniversary

Egba Anglican Diocese on Tuesday February 24, 2026 marked Saint Matthias Day and the anniversary of the inauguration of the Church of Nigeria with a solemn Holy Eucharistic service.

The commemorative service was presided over by Ven. Isaac O. Oyeneye, assisted by five other priests. In his sermon, the Rev. Can. Victor M. Oluwalusi extolled the faith, sacrifice and foresight of the founding fathers who witnessed the inauguration of the Church in 1979, 47 years ago. He paid glowing tribute to the pioneer Archbishop of the Church, Timothy O. Olufosoye, acknowledging his dedication and foundational leadership.

Drawing from the biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles 1:12ff, the preacher reflected on the process that led to the selection of Matthias as the replacement for Judas Iscariot. He noted that Matthias and Joseph Barsabbas had journeyed with the apostles from the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist to His ascension. Emphasizing the unseen commitment of Matthias, he remarked, “His secret labour and efforts were later rewarded openly.”

Applying the message to contemporary Christian living, Rev. Oluwalusi urged believers to see their service as rendered unto God alone and to carry out their responsibilities wholeheartedly. He encouraged the congregation to remain faithful in quiet diligence, assuring them that God rewards openly those who serve Him sincerely, often when they least expect it.

The service ended on a celebratory note with a special birthday thanksgiving for Mrs. Susan Mopelola Oyeneye, wife of Ven. Isaac O. Oyeneye, and Rev. Can. Solomon Olufemi Oladimeji, both of whom marked their birthdays on February 24. The congregation joined in prayers and goodwill, adding a joyful climax to the solemn commemoration.

Egba Anglican Diocese Women’s Guild Conference Ends in Celebration

The thanksgiving and enrolment service of this year’s Women’s Guild Conference of the Egba Anglican Diocese marked the grand finale of the three-day spiritual exercise. The service began with the dedication of a marble Warden’s seat and additional chairs in the chancel of the host church, Christ Anglican Church, Iporo Ake, by the Diocesan, Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Adekunle.

A powerful prayer session led by Ven. Olusola O. Ogunseiye, Women’s Director, set a spiritually uplifting tone for the service. This was followed by the enrolment of 67 new members into the Women’s Guild, symbolising renewed commitment and growth within the organisation.

Delivering the sermon for the thanksgiving service, the Diocesan, Rt.Rev.Dr. Emmanuel O. Adekunle urged members to imitate God in love, peace, and kindness. Using the word “Resemblance” to expound the conference theme, “Be Imitators of God, as Well-Beloved Children” (Ephesians 5:1), he explained that true Christian identity is reflected in character. He noted that the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch because they mimicked Jesus Christ and resembled Him in conduct.

Such resemblance, he stressed, can only be achieved through daily self-surrender, presenting oneself as a living sacrifice unto God and living out one’s confession of faith. Citing 1 Corinthians 11:1, he encouraged the congregation to pattern their lives after Christ and faithfully follow His example.

The service culminated in a colourful thanksgiving session presented on an Archdeaconry basis, as delegates expressed their joy through coordinated dance, radiant smiles, resounding songs of praise, and heartfelt celebration. The atmosphere reflected deep gratitude and spiritual fulfilment, bringing the three-day conference to a memorable and triumphant close.

Egba Women’s Guild Conference Deepens in Impact

Spiritual fervour and practical enlightenment marked the second day of the 2026 Egba Anglican Diocese Women’s Guild Conference, as delegates gathered for morning devotion led by Mrs. Caroline Kuponiyi. Reading from Luke 9:43b–50, she admonished participants not to judge the authenticity of Christian faith based on denominational differences, urging believers to embrace unity in Christ.

Rev’d Julius A. Olawuni concluded the Bible Study session by reaffirming that choosing to imitate God is the greatest decision any believer can make. He emphasized that through genuine imitation of God’s character, humanity reflects divine virtues in conduct and lifestyle.

During the official opening ceremony, the Diocesan President, Dr. Olubimpe O.M. Adekunle, warmly welcomed delegates with heartfelt joy and gratitude. Speaking on the conference theme, “Be Imitators of God, as Well-Beloved Children,” she noted that it highlights the defining characteristics of Christian women.

She therefore encouraged participants to diligently pursue godliness in their Christian journey, emulating biblical figures such as Esther, Ruth, and Joseph, while avoiding the pitfalls of those who failed to imitate God. Citing the sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas as well as Samson, she warned against indiscipline and moral compromise. She stressed that beloved children must embody holiness in words and deeds, shun deceit, walk as children of light, flee from works of darkness, and live lives filled with the Holy Spirit and gratitude.

The programme was further enriched by a powerful prayer session led by Rev. Israel A. Olagbemiro, drawing delegates into a deeper atmosphere of consecration and spiritual renewal. Beyond the spiritual exercises, the conference featured enlightening and practical presentations. A health talk on risk factors for sudden cardiac arrest was delivered by Nr. Omolola Omitogun, while Nr. Adenike Caroline Oginni addressed issues of urban pollution and public health. Pastor Felix Fashina (ACA, ACTI) also enlightened delegates on Nigeria’s new tax law, broadening their awareness of civic responsibilities.

The day was also honored by the presence of the Diocesan, Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Adekunle, who launched the presidential charge with a substantial financial contribution. Also present were the Dean of the Cathedral, Ven. Samuel O.B. Omidiji, alongside several Archdeacons and priests from across the Diocese.

With its rich blend of spiritual depth, moral instruction, and social enlightenment, the conference continues to make a profound impact, reinforcing the call for Christian women to live as true imitators of God.

St. Stephen’s Church, Efon-Adanri Dedicated in Celebration of the 70th Posthumous Birthday of Hon. Justice Ayobode Olujimi Lokulo-Sodipe

On Wednesday, 18th February 2026, members of the Church, family, friends, and well-wishers gathered in thanksgiving to God at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Efon Adanri, as the Diocesan Bishop of Egba, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle, dedicated the newly completed church auditorium to the glory of God. The dedication formed part of activities marking the posthumous 70th birthday of Hon. Justice Ayobode Olujimi Lokulo-Sodipe, JCA, whose vision and generosity made the project possible.
The dedication service was attended by a large gathering of clergymen, church leaders, family members, parishioners, church faithful, and distinguished personalities from the legal profession and other sectors. The atmosphere was joyful and reverent, as thanksgiving was offered to God for a life devoted to faith, service, and generosity.
The sermon was delivered by the Diocesan Bishop of Egba, Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle, who paid tribute to the late jurist, describing him as a man of vision, faith, and uncommon generosity. He noted that although Efon Alaye was neither his hometown nor directly connected to him, he embraced it as a mission field and committed himself wholeheartedly to the growth of the Church. This commitment led to building a standard Vicarage, dedicated 10 years ago, and now a standard church building. Both serve as a testament to his generosity and mission-oriented nature. The Bishop recalled that following his passing, the completion of the church project appeared uncertain, but God used his wife, children, family, and loved ones to ensure its completion. He charged the family, particularly the children, to uphold and continue the godly legacy their father left behind, and encouraged all present to emulate his dedication to God and commitment to service.
The service was honoured by the presence of Mama Egba, Dr. Mrs. O. O. M. Adekunle; the Bishop of Egba West Diocese, Rt. Rev. S. O. Ogundeji; and the retired Bishop of Ekiti West Diocese, Rt. Rev. S. O. Oke. Also present was Mrs Afolake Ibironke Lokulo-Sodipe, wife of the deceased, who read the Epistle during the service.
A highlight of the occasion was the unveiling of newly installed sound system, including a new engine, speakers, and keyboard, which added beauty and vibrancy to the worship experience. The celebration concluded with thanksgiving, group photographs, and warm Christian fellowship, marking what would have been his 70th birthday and celebrating a life well spent in service to God and humanity.
