Topic: What are they saying about

‘‘It is reported… that you.’’Nehemiah 6:6 NKJVTo prevent Nehemiah from rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls, his enemies spread rumours about him. ‘It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore, according to these rumours, you are rebuilding the wall, that you may be their king’ (v. 6 NKJV). Now, you can’t control what people think, or keep them from saying it, but you can determine your response. Nehemiah did: ‘I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” But they sent me this message four times, and I answered them in the same manner’ (vv. 3-4 NKJV). This story teaches you three important principles: 1) Refuse to give more attention to a critic than you would to a friend. To Nehemiah, the people who mattered were those who were for him rather than those against him. So instead of trying to change minds, he changed gears and moved forwards. 2) Realise that with opportunity comes opposition. Paul wrote, ‘There is a wide-open door for a great work here, although many oppose me’ (1 Corinthians 16:9 NLT). Criticism is a sign of respect; if you weren’t succeeding, they wouldn’t even notice you. 3) Remember that it’s the big battles that produce the big victories. Satan won’t send you a congratulatory telegram because you have decided to do God’s will; he will fight you every step of the way. But ‘greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world’ (1 John 4:4 KJV). Today God is on your side, so your victory is assured.

Topic: Poured from experience to experience

‘‘And has not been emptied [poured] from vessel to vessel.’’ Jeremiah 48:11, NKJV

God said, ‘Moab has been at ease from his youth; he has settled on his dregs, and has not been emptied [poured] from vessel to vessel…Therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent [aroma] has not changed.’ This Scripture paints two pictures for us; one is natural and the other is spiritual. In the natural picture, we see how wine is made by being poured from one vessel into another. In the spiritual picture, we see how God changes us by pouring us from one experience into another.

And just as in winemaking, when the wine is poured out of one vessel into another, it leaves behind the dregs which must be removed in order to produce good vintage.Similarly, God will permit you to be poured into situations that reveal your weaknesses so that you can work on them. And no matter how uncomfortable it is or how badly you want to escape, God won’t let you until your issues have been dealt with successfully. How will you know when that’s so? Because as you enter your next experience, you will leave them behind you.

In the winemaking process, the wine doesn’t spend the same amount of time in each vessel. That’s because each vessel serves a different purpose. Only the winemaker knows the purpose of each vessel, and therefore determines the amount of time needed in it. If you’re being poured from one experience into another, read this: ‘Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 1:6, NKJV)

OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9TH 2023

THEME: THE WORKS OF GRACE IV

MEMORISE:
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Acts 1:8

READ: Ezekiel 36:27-28
27. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

28. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

MESSAGE:
As we continue with our study of the works of grace, we will consider the baptism of the Holy Spirit today. After God has enabled you to do His will voluntarily without being forced, He will then baptise you in His Spirit. When we were younger Christians, we were told, "You must be sanctified before you begin to ask for baptism in the Holy Spirit". The Holy Ghost baptism is very dangerous, so much so that it can even destroy a person.

In those days, people gave offerings voluntarily- nobody needed to preach to you. We were willing to spend and be spent for the One who saved us; He had given us a new heart - a heart of flesh. In those days, you couldn't become a worker in the church until you were sanctified because worker willingly surrendered their time and resources to God. After you have become sanctified, God can then trust you with His Holy Spirit and power. The Holy Spirit cannot live in a heart that is stubborn, unruly and disobedient.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit comes with power (Acts 1:8) and thus, you need to be sanctified before that can happen. Beloved, the Holy Spirit is like a bomb. Nobody will give a bomb to someone who is not broken. When you join the army, they take you through a series of training programmes and by the time they are finished with you, you would almost be like a zombie. You would begin to do everything they ask of you without questions. When you become a Christian, you have joined the army of the Lord and until you are thoroughly broken, He won't give you His power. Don't mind those who pretend to be operating in the power of God while their behaviors are not portraying Christ; Simon the sorcerer could perform some magic. If you want the true power of God, you must be sanctified first. Carnality must be gone from your life, so that He can release His power to you.

When the baptism in the Holy Ghost happens, one of the primary evidence will be speaking in tongues. No one will have to tell you what to say. The day l was baptised in the Holy Spirit, it was the Lord Himself who drove my car home because l wasn't in this world; all l knew was that l had no control over my tongue. That kind of true power is available for you, provided you are sanctified. After receiving this power, you then become a witness to Him as He said in Acts 1:8.

PRAYER POINT:
If you are sanctified but not yet baptised in the Holy Spirit, go ahead and ask God to baptise you now.

MEMORISE:
"The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed." Matthew 8:8

READ: Matthew 8:8-13
8. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

12. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

MESSAGE
Whenever God wants to do something special, His word takes up the form of a traveler and goes to the place where healing is needed. Psalm 107:20 says:

"He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."

At one point or the other, you will need the intervention of God over a matter; in that period, God send His word on an errand to help you. My prayer is that God will never withhold His word from coming to you. When His word comes to you, it means a solution has come to your problems.

One of the special things that the word travels to do is to bring about healing. God created all parts of your body. If you discover that any part of your body is not functioning as it should, cry to Him and He will send His word to heal it or install a spare part if the damage is beyond repair. That is what happened in our Bible reading today when the Centurion's servant was ill and he told Jesus to only speak the word and his servant would be healed.

"And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them." Luke 5:17,

In the Bible passage above, as Jesus was sharing the word, the power of God was present to heal the sick. I used to lay hands on all the sick people at our programmes, but then, Luke 5:17 showed me that the healing can be going on simultaneously with the sermon. Now, even as l preach, God heals the sick. This is why l pity those who get carried away during the sermon; you are missing out on a lot more than you know.

Put all your faith in the Word of God today, and you will receive divine healing in Jesus' name.

KEY POINT:
Healing power is embedded in the word of God.

The sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
Oh, hear the voice of Jesus!

Sweetest note in seraph song;
Sweetest name on mortal tongue;
Sweetest carol ever sung:
Jesus, blessed Jesus!

2. Your many sins are all forgiv’n,
Oh, hear the voice of Jesus;
The veil ’twixt you and God is riven,
Redemption wrought by Jesus.

3. All glory to the dying Lamb!
I now believe in Jesus;
I love the blessed Savior’s name,
I love the name of Jesus.

No other name but Jesus;
Oh, how my soul delights to hear
The precious name of Jesus!

Topic: The story of your Bible

“The word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.’’ 1 Peter 1:25, NKJV

In the fourteenth century, there was not a single copy of the Bible in English! It was available only in Latin, the language of the clergy, and those were chained to the podiums of the cathedrals. Then a prominent professor of divinity at Oxford University said, ‘This is not right. People should be able to read the Bible in their own language.’ Church leaders branded him a heretic and an instrument of the devil. Like Noah who pounded the nails into the ark while people ridiculed and scorned him, John Wycliffe began translating the Scriptures as a flood of persecution emerged around him. When he finally completed his translation of the Scriptures, he wrote this in the flyleaf of the first copy of the English Scriptures: ‘This Bible is translated and shall make possible a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.’

Five hundred years later, President Abraham Lincoln borrowed that statement for his famous Gettysburg Address. Thirty years after Wycliffe died, he was again proclaimed a heretic. Consequently, his body was exhumed, and his bones were burned to dust, and his ashes cast into a river. A contemporary historian describes the scene like this: ‘Thus this brook hath conveyed his ashes into (the river) Avon, Avon into Severn, Severn into the narrow seas, they into the ocean. And thus ashes… are the emblem of his doctrine… now… dispersed the world over.’

Hence Peter writes,
‘“The word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.’

READ: John 1:1-18
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2. The same was in the beginning with God.

3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

16. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

MESSAGE
From our Bible reading, we can clearly see that the Word is Jesus Christ (John 1:14). The Word is extremely powerful. If you can know and be filled with the Word, then there is nothing that would be impossible to you.

If you meet someone and the fellow is introducing himself to you, he is likely to tell you what he does. For example, a Civil engineer will most likely introduce himself as one. In getting to know the Word also, you must first know what the Word does. According to John 1:1-3, the Word is the Creator of all things. Is there anybody who can duplicate the sun, moon, seas, or the human brain? Do you know that it is the Word that created you? To prove that all His creations are masterpieces, He put a unique code in your fingerprints such that no other creation of His is exactly like you. Someone else may have the same height, looks and complexion as you, but no two people are exactly the same. He made you unique for a purpose and you will fulfil that purpose in Jesus' name.

When you see a masterpiece, it is usually extremely valuable, so valuable that no one can place a price on it and it's thus often auctioned to the highest bidder. Matthew 16:26 says that your soul is so precious that even if all the riches in this world were to be put in a bid for your soul, there still wouldn't be enough value for it. That is why l marvel when l see people selling their soul to the devil for material wealth. Such people are selling themselves short. The only price that is worth being paid for your soul is the blood of the Lord Jesus - the Word Himself. He has shed his blood and paid the price for you to be with Him for eternity.

Some sell their souls to the devil because they are lusting after a woman. Some sell their souls by telling lies so as not to get in trouble with men. There is nothing the world and the devil has to give that can be as valuable as your soul. Don't sell yourself short to the enemy, the Word has already purchase you with His priceless blood.

KEY POINT:
When you commit sin , the devil sees you as a fool because you are selling your self short.

Topic: Communicate with your mate

‘‘Use your head… so that your love is sincere… not sentimental gush.’’
Philippians 1:9 MSG

Ever notice when you’re dating somebody, you can talk effortlessly for hours, but if you have been married a while, unless you work at it, conversation can become superficial and even lead to disagreements? The Bible says, ‘Be willing to listen and slow to speak’ (James 1:19 NCV). There is an art to communicating.

1). Look for opportunities to compliment one another. You may think your partner is wonderful, but they need to hear you say it frequently. It takes twelve compliments to neutralise the effect of one criticism, so when life beats your mate down, build them up
2). Don’t try to change them by nagging. Questions like, ‘Why can’t you?’ or ‘Why do you always?’ can sound more like parenting than partnering. Tell your partner once – not a thousand times – what’s bothering you. And before you speak, ask yourself, ‘Would I say this to a valued friend?’ If not, don’t say it!
3). A marriage can only stand so much ‘soul-baring’. As a rule, shorter is better. ‘Honey, can we talk for a few minutes?’ is less threatening than the ominous, ‘We need to talk’ announcement. People can only stand so much ‘soul-baring’; pressuring them just gets the wrong result. If your spouse is unresponsive on an issue, discuss it with a trusted friend or counsellor. Then give your spouse the condensed, less emotional version
4). Let your mate lead. When your spouse is talking about things you’re not particularly interested in, remember the Scripture, ‘Submit to one another’ (Ephesians 5:21 NIV). Sometimes that means asking, ‘What would you like to talk about?’

If you want a good marriage, use those four principles every day.

"Patient endurance is what you need now.’’ Hebrews 10:36 NLT

Satan studies you. He understands your strengths and weaknesses and knows how to push you to your limits. But when you keep standing, keep believing, and keep fighting, the Bible says, ‘Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown’ (James 1:12 NKJV). The word ‘approved’ means victory qualifies you for greater things. The word ‘endures’ means your character and tenacity are being tested.

You say, ‘How long will this trial last?’ Only God knows. Goliath defied the armies of Israel for forty days (see 1 Samuel 17:16). Satan hindered Daniel’s prayers for twenty-one days (see Daniel 10:13). Satan is relentless, so you must be too. When it comes to prayer, your persistence overcomes his resistance. ‘Do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord… Patient endurance is what you need now… Then you will receive all that he has promised’ (Hebrews 10:35-36 NLT).

David didn’t get into trouble with Bathsheba until he left the battlefield (see 2 Samuel 11:1). So keep fighting, and God will come to your aid. He did it for Joshua. When Joshua needed extra time to defeat his enemies, God made the sun stand still and time stop (see Joshua 10:12). It seemed God was saying to him, ‘As long as the sun doesn’t go down, you won’t either, for the same power that’s holding it up is holding you up!’ When Jesus healed ten lepers, the Bible says, ‘As they went, they were cleansed’ (Luke 17:14 KJV). They were probably wondering, ‘When will it happen, and how will it happen?’

Faith doesn’t demand details and explanations; it just keeps moving forwards, believing God for the right result.

Topic: Are you at the end of your rope?

‘‘Wait on the LORD... and He shall strengthen your heart.’’ Psalm 27:14 NKJV

David said: ‘I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart’ (vv. 13-14 NKJV). The word ‘wait’ originates from a Hebrew word used in making rope. Every rope starts as a thread, and every added strand increases its strength. So each time you wait on the Lord, you add another thread to the rope; you become a little stronger and a little more able to cope. Are you hanging on by a thread? Spend more time with God and watch Him turn the thread into a rope.

Now, waiting is not always passive; sometimes it’s active, like waiting on a customer and seeing that their needs are met. In this case, waiting is not so much a position as it is a focus. The Bible says, ‘Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee’ (Isaiah 26:3 KJV). Whether it’s sitting prayerfully in God’s presence or actively serving Him, you have the assurance that your strength will be renewed.

If you are at the end of your rope today, grab hold of these promises:
‘Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint’ (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV).
‘As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters… so our eyes look to the Lord our God’ (Psalm 123:2 NKJV)

‘‘Whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’’ Matthew 18:18 NIV

God told Joshua, ‘Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand’ (Joshua 8:18 NKJV). It’s amazing how courageous you feel when God is backing you up. When you know He is on your side, you can say, ‘No weapon that is formed against me will prevail’ (see Isaiah 54:17).

But overconfidence is self-confidence that’s not based on God-confidence. Our problem is, we plan, say, and do things without first checking to find out if God is behind us. Do you remember what the evil spirit said to those trying to mimic Paul’s ministry when they weren’t empowered by God’s Spirit? ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?’ (Acts 19:15 NKJV).

When you’re under attack, you need to know that
1). You’re in right standing with God (see 2 Corinthians 5:19),
2). It’s God’s fight as well as yours (see 2 Chronicles 20:15), and
3). ‘Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven’ (Matthew 18:18 NIV).

There must be agreement in both realms. If it’s not approved where God is, it shouldn’t be approved where you are. Your confidence comes from knowing you’re operating in His will. The Bible calls us ‘labourers together with God’ (1 Corinthians 3:9 KJV), so you can’t go off and do your own thing. Don’t try moving any mountain the Lord doesn’t want moved or raising anybody from the dead except the Lazarus He calls forth. We do on earth only what He has declared to be His will in heaven. And He backs us up!

Topic: Don’t be dismissive

‘‘By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.’’ Proverbs 13:10 NKJV

Why do we dismiss input that could help us? Sometimes it’s to protect our ego against a painful truth. When we have an entrenched opinion, we adopt a dismissive approach towards the thinking of others. And not only do we hurt them, we hurt ourselves. ‘Better a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more’ (Ecclesiastes 4:13 NKJV).

Yes, you have areas of expertise. But you also have areas where you need advice. The day you decide to stop listening is the day you decide to stop growing. Thomas Carlyle said, ‘Every man is my superior in that I can learn from him.’ ’Even if what you learn is negative or a lesson in what not to do, it’s still valuable information that can protect and enrich you. Dr John Maxwell says: ‘What is the one thing – more than any other – that will determine the growth of an organisation? The growth of the people in the organisation. And what determines the people’s growth? The growth of the leader! As long as people are following you, they will be able to go only as far as you go. If you’re not growing, they won’t be growing – either that, or they will go somewhere else where they can grow.’

The story is told of an old farmer who entered his mule in the Kentucky Derby. ‘Your mule has no chance of winning against all those thoroughbreds,’ a race official told him. ‘I know,’ he replied, ‘but I thought the associations would do him some good.’ To grow, you need the right associations and the right input.

Topic: Build your life on God’s Word

‘‘The LORD has not chosen any of these.’’ 1 Samuel 16:10 NLT

David had seven brothers. When it came time to pick a king to replace Saul, Samuel thought any one of them would make a better king than David. But God rejected all seven. Why? Because:

1). They had the looks but not the spiritual core. God explained to Samuel, ‘People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart’ (v. 7 NLT). David’s spiritual core was formed by years spent with God. His heart’s cry was, ‘As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God’ (Psalm 42:1 NKJV).

2) They had no personal experiences with God to fall back on. The lion and the bear were big, and Goliath was bigger yet. But David wasn’t intimidated. ‘The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine’ (1 Samuel 17:37 NKJV). There are no insignificant battles. The little ones equip you for the big ones that shape your destiny, so stand on your ‘God experiences’. How you respond in a crisis is determined by the experiences you have had with God.

3). They were easily influenced by others. David’s brothers allowed the fears of those around them to erode their faith. Fear is contagious; if you listen to it long enough, you will get infected. No, you shouldn’t be isolated from the world, but you must be insulated against its negative influences. Listening to Goliath frightened David’s brothers, but it didn’t frighten David. So who are you listening to today? Get God’s opinion and build your life upon it; allow His Word to settle every issue.
