THE REDEEMING LOVE OF CHRIST (4)
So, this guy had rehearsed the speech many times.. “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.” this is what he has planned to say whenever he sees his father again. He had spent all his dad gave him. All! He had spent the inheritance.. Lost his dignity... Wasted his portion. And travelled (abroad) so far from home that returning must have felt almost impossible.
But then Scripture says something powerful... “And when he came to himself…” Luke 15:17 🤔 Repentance began when he came to himself. He remembered home, He remembered his father, and he arose. This is where the Gospel becomes more than a message of comfort. Grace does not merely make sinners feel better about where they are; grace calls them out of where they are and brings them home. The son had a broken life, but he also had a broken heart... He did not say, “My father should understand me.” He said, “I have sinned.” So he arose and went home.
And then came the revelation of the Father's heart; “But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran…” Luke 15:20 (hmmmm) 🤔 what a father! The father was watching. The son thought he was returning to a house where he would have to negotiate for acceptance. But NO!
The father was running to restore him... His father said; "...bring forth the best robe, and put it on him" Luke 15:22. The robe said, “Your identity is not finished.” The ring said, “Your place has not been erased.” The shoes said, “You are not returning as a slave.” And the feast declared, “What was dead has come alive again.”
Imagine what he would have missed if he didn't take that step. To now think that his father had prepared those things for him even before he erred. 🤔 This is the redeeming love of Christ. He does not excuse your rebellion. He does not celebrate your departure. He calls you home. There are people who are physically in church but spiritually in a far country. They still sing, but the fire is gone. They still preach, but the altar has become cold. They still know Scripture, but fellowship with God has become distant.
