*Bildad: Punished Unfairly*

Job 9:1–10:22

Unless you live in Michigan or Ohio, you are probably not aware of the Michigan-Ohio war which was waged over the territory known as the Toledo strip. The conflict ended after President Andrew Jackson stepped in as an arbitrator (per Ohioans) or as an advocate for Ohio (per Michiganders).

Job needed an arbitrator or mediator for his situation. He acknowledged the truth of Bildad’s premise that God does not pervert justice (8:3; 9:2). However, Job posed his own question, “How can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?” (9:2). Bildad believed that if you do right, God will bless. If you do evil, God will punish. However, Job understood that nobody is righteous before a holy God. Who was right?

Job states, “[God] is not a man like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court. If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot” (9:32–35).

Without the hope of this mediator, Job returned to his lament: “Why then did you bring me out of the womb? I wish I had died before any eye saw me” (10:18). It is the lament of a man who knows what he needs. Better yet, it is the lament of a man who knows Whom he needs. He just doesn’t know where to find Him.

Unbeknownst to Job, he is desiring Jesus. Life without Jesus is a life of despair during loss and pain. Friends and family can only help so much. But Jesus is there with us in the dark times of life. Oh Job! You have more than an Arbitrator, you have an Advocate. The Man, Christ Jesus!

You will have to prove it to me if you are among those who claim that Jesus Christ refuses to do for you something that He has done for any other of His disciples!
I address this to all of those who insist that the gifts of the Spirit ended when the last apostle died. They have never furnished chapter and verse for their position.
When some men beat the cover off their Bible to demonstrate how they stand for the Word of God, they should be reminded that they are only standing by their own interpretation!
I find nothing in the Bible that says the Lord has changed. He has the same love, the same grace, the same mercy, the same power, the same desires for the blessings of His children.
Why can we not claim all that God has promised for His redeemed people? What a sad condition for Christians who are in the Church of the mighty Redeemer and Deliverer, who is eternally the Victor, the Rock of Ages. Let us never forget that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever! (see Hebrews 13:8).
Pray with: Almighty God,l thank You and praise You that You are the same yesterday, today and forever.
This means that You are exactly the same God who personally led the children of Israel in the desert wilderness.
Thank You, Lord for Your patience and guidance in our lives today.

*Eliphaz: Sin
Caused Your Suffering*

Job 4:1–5:27:

Years ago, when I was in seminary, I misplaced one of my Bibles. One of my classmates picked it up. Approximately a week later, he returned it to me along with a statement: “You obviously have not been having quiet time with the Lord.” It must not have occurred to him that I had more than one Bible. I thought, “With friends like you, who needs enemies?”

Job must have had similar thoughts as his friends began to respond to his plight. While they were silent (2:13), they were probably a comfort to Job (2:11). But when they began to speak, their words were sharp as razors. The first to respond was Eliphaz. He appears to have been the leader of the three friends (42:7).

Eliphaz complimented Job for giving wise instruction to others, strengthening the weak and supporting the unstable (vv. 3–4). At least, this was the public face of Job. However, because of Eliphaz’s extreme view of retribution, he was convinced that Job was leading a double life. Eliphaz believed that a person “only” reaps what he sows. Therefore, Job must have secretly sowed evil.

The good news from Eliphaz’s perspective was that Job could be blessed by God. His tragedy was God’s reproof (5:17). If Job turned to God (5:8) and away from evil (5:12–13), advised Eliphaz, then Job could once again experience God’s blessing (5:17).

Galatians 6:7 is clear: “Do not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” However, tragedy is not always the result of our own sinful behavior. Jesus Christ, who had no sin was tragically crucified for our sins. We may suffer for sin, but it is not always our own personal sin. As believers, we should never despise God’s discipline, but tragedy isn’t necessarily God’s discipline.
