Topic: Mentoring and Readiness
Speaker: Prof. Frances Ekwu
Scriptures: Luck 10:12, Mattew 28:18_20, Mark 3:14.
He appointed the twelve to be with him first, so they can learn of him before sending them out. One way of raising effective and faithful disciples or workers is through mentoring.
Mentoring entails
1.Teaching
2. modeling
3. grooming of a younger folk.
Christian mentorship is a discipleship process where a more matured christian help guide a less experienced christian grow spiritually, in faith, in grace so he becomes like christ
Mentoring is not indoctrination, or grooming someone to be like you, speak or behave like you the mentor. The younger folk is allowed to be himself, while growing to become like christ.
Procedure of mentorship
*Select people (disciples) and teach them till they become equipped and reliable to teach others. (2Tim 2:2)
*Continuity in the spreading of the message of salvation.
Mentorship is a continuous process
Joel 2:3 says "Tell your children, and let your children tell their children, and their children to the next generation".
Requirements of mentorship
1.Phil 2:8 Mentoring entails Obedience.
2.Luck 9:1 mentoring entails Authority
3.John 13:34_35 mentoring entails Love; teaching on the need to love. Jesus is love personified, so you groom others to show love and live the command of Jesus which is to Love.
4. Mentoring entails prayer; raise disciples who can pray. 1Thesselonians 5:17 says "pray without ceasing". You ought to raise men that pray continuously.
Goals of Mentorship
It help christians become like Christ; in totality, observing all that Jesus did and say in the scripture. Walking and living daily with consciousness to the pattern of Jesus.
Qualities of a good mentor
1. You must be a good repented christian.
2. You must believe what Christ stands for.
3. You must behave like how the disciples of Jesus behaved.
4. Availability: You have to be fully available to disciple others
5. Readiness: You have to be well equip, prepared to teach others.
6. Willingness: You have to be willing to disciple others.
