Jehoshaphat reigns in Judah in 2 Chronicles 17. His reign is very remarkable because of his dedication to God:
“Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel. Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance. And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah”(vs.3-6).
As an exemplary leader, he sends his officers to all the land to teach his people the way of the Lord:
“So they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law of the LORD with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people(v.9).
What a great example for the people. No wonder revival and reformation begin to take place in the land. Today, we may not wait until a leader begins to teach us. We must engage in daily Bible study and prayer for us to be revived and reformed. Isaiah delineates how to do proper Bible study:
“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little”(Isaiah 28:10).
God will indeed bless us just as He blessed Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah. Amen.

Rehoboam fortifies what is left of his kingdom in 2 Chronicles 11. All the priests and Levites leave Israel for Judah because of their rejection by Jeroboam who is now the king of the Northern kingdom (Israel). He rejects the worship of the living God:
“Then he appointed for himself priests for the high places, for the demons, and the calf idols which he had made”(v.15).
What a shocking and total departure from the worshipping of the true God within such a short time! Thank God some of the people living in Israel decide for the true God:
“And after the Levites left, those from all the tribes of Israel, such as set their heart to seek the LORD God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD God of their fathers. So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong for three years, because they walked in the way of David and Solomon for three years”(vs.16,17).
What we can learn from this is that everyone is ultimately responsible for one’s faith and relationship with God. No one can cite the influence or command of a leader for doing wrong.
“With what shall I come before the LORD,
And bow myself before the High God?
Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings,
With calves a year old?
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
Ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God”(Micah 6:6-8).

*Cultivating A Taste For God's Word.*

*‘How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!’ Psalm 119:103 NIV*

The fact that we now enjoy the vegetables we hated as children indicates that, as we mature, we can cultivate a taste for healthy, life-giving food. And since the Bible is soul food, you can cultivate a taste for that too. *Scripture nurtures followers of Jesus as food nurtures the body.*We don’t simply learn or study it; we assimilate it in ways that energise us into acts of love.*

Consumer research indicates the average Bible owner has nine Bibles and is looking for more. What’s wrong with this picture? The unexpressed secret is that many people find the Bible boring. This is quite a recent problem—and a serious one. Ancient Greek, the language of the New Testament, has no word for boredom. The word didn’t acquire its current meaning in English until the last few centuries. When we consider the ancient world—no television, internet, movies, and virtually no books—we’re inclined to think how boring it must have been. But the ancients weren’t bored.

*We’re the generation that gets bored, because capacity to focus our attention and delight our minds in prolonged thought has been diminished by dependency on external stimuli. We have too many tempting alternatives. That’s why becoming a faithful Bible reader begins as a discipline, continues as a duty, and finally becomes a delight. ‘How sweet are Your words… sweeter than honey to my mouth!’ And that can be your experience, too, when it comes to reading God’s Word. You just need to get serious about it.*

*How To Keep A Good Attitude.*

*‘I will praise You seven times a day.’ Psalm 119:164 TLB*

A bad attitude is like a flat tyre; you won’t get anywhere until you change it. Few things in life are more important than your attitude, and here are four ways to help you keep a good one:

*(1) Realise your attitude needs to be constantly adjusted.* Anything you don’t maintain eventually deteriorates. The stronger your natural inclination is towards doubt and negativity, the more you will have to work at it. Begin each day with an attitude check, and throughout the day, look for red flags signalling that you’re not doing so well.

*(2) Pray because you will need God’s help to maintain a good attitude.* The Bible says: ‘Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you.’ (Psalm 37:3–5 NLT)

*(3) Look for what’s good, and you will find it.* Australian author and evangelist Nick Vujicic says, ‘If you can’t get a miracle, become one.’ If God can use a man without arms and legs to be His hands and feet, He can use any willing heart. Including yours!

*(4) Look for people with faith and spend time with them. Where are they? You will find them soaring above the doubters like eagles. If you’re having a bad day, get close and ‘draft’ behind them the way racers do. If they’re having difficulty, you be the one to get out in front and make things easier. Seven times a day David paused to praise God. Can you imagine what that would do for your attitude?*

*You Belong To God.*

*You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people.’ Ephesians 2:19 NIV*

’His purpose was to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. *For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.’*

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone. In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.’ (Ephesians 2:15–21 NIV)

*If your children stood outside your house pleading to get in, what would you think? Wouldn’t you say, ‘Come in, you’re my flesh and blood. I love you, you don’t need to beg’? God is building a house, and you’re part of it. You can come before Him at any time with any need, knowing you will be received with love. God is the loving Father you always hoped for, and you’re the child He always wanted. If you have any doubts about that, look at the cross; that’s how much God loves you. Today you belong to God!*

*Never Lose Your Passion For God*

*‘Passion for Your house has consumed me.’ Psalm 69:9 NLT*

Question: are you passionate about God, or merely passive? Notice the steps that led to Peter’s denial of Jesus.

Step one: ‘Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to Me again, strengthen your brothers.’ (Luke 22:31–32 NLT) Jesus warned Peter he was a target, but Peter didn’t take him seriously.

Step two: ‘They arrested Jesus and led Him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance.’ (Luke 22:54 NLT) Peter was one of Christ’s closest disciples, but you’ll notice, now he is following Him ‘at a distance’.

Step three: ‘A servant girl… said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!” But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know Him!”’ (Luke 22:56–57 NLT)

Step four: ‘That moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know Me.” And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.’ (Luke 22:61–62 NLT)

*Here is how it works: first you assume you won’t fall, so you’re unprepared for Satan’s attack when it comes. Next you allow the problems and pressures of life to make you forget that your first commitment must always be to the Lord. Finally, you end up spiritually defeated. You say, ‘That will never happen to me.’ That’s what Peter said! The reason Satan has ‘desired to have you’ (Luke 22:31 KJV) is because he knows when you become passionate about doing God’s will, you will be unstoppable. So, never lose your passion for God.*

*How To Handle Disappointment 1.*

*‘The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.’ Proverbs 24:16 NLT*

For the next few days, let’s look at five different types of disappointment.

*Disappointment in yourself.* This is the most debilitating kind of disappointment because it can put you into a downward spiral that’s hard to recover from. Peter experienced it. He swore loyalty to Christ saying, ‘Everyone else may abandon You but not me. I’m Yours until death!’ (see Matthew 26:33). Yet he denied Christ three times. Later he remembered Christ’s words: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will disown Me three times.’ (Matthew 26:34 NIV) Peter, heartbroken by his failure, ‘went outside and wept bitterly.’ (Luke 22:62 NIV)

Is that how you feel today? Are you thinking, ‘Lord, how could You possibly use someone like me?’ Jesus wasn’t shocked. He was well aware of Peter’s flaws when He called him. But He also knew that His outspoken disciple had a tender heart, so He chose to extend grace to him rather than cast him aside. When Christ gave His post-resurrection orders to ‘tell His disciples and Peter’ to meet Him in Galilee, He reaffirmed His choice of His failed disciple (see Mark 16:7). The rest of Peter’s story is one of victory.

So when you sin, or fail and disappoint yourself, what should you do?

(1) Humble yourself and repent. Confess your sin; don’t excuse, rationalise, or blame circumstances and people.

(2) Receive God’s grace and forgiveness by faith, not feelings. Don’t let Satan convince you that you are beyond God’s reach and grace. You’re not.

(3) Don’t add insult to injury by letting disappointment mire you in hopelessness and despair.

(4) Get whatever help you need to get back on track—sooner, not later.

*It's An Inside Job 4.*

*‘The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness.’ Romans 8:26 NLT*

*The twin pillars of a believer’s daily life should be prayer and Scripture. But, while praying may be simple, it’s not always easy. We lack motivation, we’re easily distracted, and we are not always sure what we should be praying for. So, recognising our human inadequacies, God provides help for us in the form of the Holy Spirit.*

*Paul writes: ‘The Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father… knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us… in harmony with God’s own will.’ (Romans 8:26–27 NLT) That means, no matter how you feel when you pray, the Holy Spirit is in prayer with you and for you, transforming your feeblest prayers into powerful appeals to the Father.*

*And when it comes to the second pillar, namely the Word of God, the Holy Spirit’s role is equally dynamic. Jesus said, ‘When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth… He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.’ (John 16:13 NIV) Note, the Holy Spirit does three things.*

*(1) He guides us as we study the Word of God and seek to understand it.*

*(2) He takes what Jesus wants us to know and reveals it to us.*

*(3) He opens our understanding about things that are still to come. No question about it, good reference books, Scripture-based resources and skilled Bible teachers are necessary and helpful, but they’re no substitute when it comes to hearing from the Holy Spirit for yourself and listening carefully to what He wants to tell you.*

*A Key To Answered Prayers.*

*Don’t refuse to help.’ Isaiah 58:7 GWT*

Max Lucado writes: ‘Ours is the wealthiest generation of Christians ever. We are bright, educated, and experienced. We can travel around the world in twenty-four hours or send a message in a millisecond. We have the most sophisticated research and medicines at the tips of our fingers. We have ample resources. A mere 2 percent of the world’s grain harvest would be enough, if shared, to erase the problems of hunger and malnutrition around the world. There is enough food on the planet to offer every person twenty-five hundred calories of sustenance a day. We have enough food to feed the hungry… When your grandchildren discover you lived during a day in which 1.75 billion people were poor and 1 billion were hungry, how will they judge your response?’

More importantly, what will God say? When the Israelites complained that God wouldn’t answer their prayer, He told them: *‘Let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke. Share your food with the hungry, take the poor and homeless into your house, and cover them with clothes when you see them naked. Don’t refuse to help your relatives. Then your light will break through like the dawn, and you will heal quickly. Your righteousness will go ahead of you, and the glory of the Lord will guard you from behind. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer. You will cry for help, and He will say, “Here I am!”… The Lord will continually guide you and satisfy you.’ (Isaiah 58:6–11 GWT)*

*So instead of focusing on your own needs, focus on the needs of others. That’s a key to answered prayer.*

*Try To Slow Down (2)*

*‘Whoever believes will not act hastily.’ Isaiah 28:16 NKJV*

Every time you get in a hurry mode, you send a ‘state of emergency’ signal to your body. And it responds by releasing the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol that prepare you to deal with danger. The body cannot distinguish between physical danger, or the danger of losing your job, or any other form of stress and pressure. It only knows that action has to be taken and that it must energise you to deal with it. Now, this is a good thing if you’re indeed physically threatened. *But to live with your body constantly on high alert is like fighting a fifteen-round nonstop boxing match.* Sooner or later, you pay the price in the form of heart disease, ulcers, forgetfulness, and a multitude of other conditions. What’s the cure?

*A-B-C: Awareness, Belief, Change.*

Become aware of your continual high-gear mode and what part you play each time you hurry. Ask yourself, ‘How could I have prevented this?’

Believe that the Holy Spirit will give you victory if you ask Him and begin to change your behaviour.

Change—consciously slow down. Talk slower, move slower. ‘Haste makes waste.’ Haste causes duplication of work, accidents, and other things that result in wasted time. Question: are you speed-reading today’s devotion? If so, this is the word for you today: try taking twice as long to read and meditate on what you’re reading, and ask God, ‘What are You saying to me? What changes do You want to bring about in my life? In what ways do You want me to improve?’

*God is not in a hurry, so slow down and get in sync with Him.*
