THE DANGEROUS MISUSE OF "GOD TOLD ME" THAT IS SILENTLY CAUSING DAMAGE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
Pause and think deeply about this.
How many times have people heard the words, "God told me," and immediately accepted it without question?
"God told me to marry this person."
"God told me to leave this church."
"God told me to give me your money."
"God told me you are my wife."
"God told me you are under a curse."
"God told me if you do not obey me, disaster will happen."
The words sound powerful. They sound spiritual. They sound unquestionable.
But here is a serious question.
Did God truly speak, or did human emotions, desires, assumptions, pressure, personal opinions, fear, or ambition begin speaking with God's voice attached to it?
This is a matter the Body of Christ cannot ignore.
Because once people place God's name on words He never spoke, the consequences become dangerous.
People have entered wrong marriages because somebody said, "God told me."
People have left healthy churches because somebody said, "God told me."
People have given away resources under pressure because somebody said, "God told me."
People have lived in fear because somebody used God's name to control them.
People have followed personalities instead of following God Himself.
The problem is not that God speaks.
God still guides.
God still directs.
God still gives wisdom.
God still brings conviction.
God still leads His people.
The danger begins when human voices become mixed with God's voice.
Scripture gives a strong warning concerning this.
Jeremiah 23:21.
"I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran. I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied."
Notice those words carefully.
God said they ran before they were sent.
They spoke before they heard.
They moved before they received instruction.
This reveals something important.
Not every spiritual sounding statement comes from God.
Not every strong feeling is God's voice.
Not every dream is divine instruction.
Not every thought entering the mind is a heavenly message.
Not every prophecy automatically means God spoke.
Believers must learn discernment.
Many people think that because something sounds spiritual, it must be true. But truth is not measured by excitement, volume, emotions, tears, or confidence.
Truth must stand beside God's Word.
1 John 4:1 says,
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God."
Notice that Scripture does not say accept everything immediately.
Scripture says test it.
Examine it.
Bring it under God's Word.
Ask questions.
Seek wisdom.
Pray.
Look at the fruit.
God never becomes offended because someone carefully examines what they hear.
Even Paul, after preaching, was examined by people who searched the Scriptures.
Acts 17:11 says,
"These were more noble because they received the word with readiness and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so."
Imagine that.
Paul himself was examined through Scripture.
How much more should believers examine human words today?
There is another danger.
Sometimes people are not intentionally lying.
Sometimes they sincerely believe God spoke when emotions spoke.
Fear can speak.
Desire can speak.
Personal ambition can speak.
Bitterness can speak.
Pressure can speak.
Excitement can speak.
Human imagination can speak.
Many people mistake inner feelings for divine instruction.
That is why wisdom and patience are important.
God is not a God of confusion.
God's direction does not require manipulation.
God's voice does not need intimidation.
God's truth does not need fear tactics.
When God speaks, His guidance aligns with His character and His Word.
2 Timothy 3:16 says,
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
The written Word remains a measuring standard.
If someone says, "God told me," but what they say opposes Scripture, wisdom, love, truth, and godly character, something is wrong.
The Body of Christ must return to spiritual maturity.
We should not become people who follow every voice.
We should become people who know God personally.
People can miss God when they depend entirely on human voices while neglecting prayer, Scripture, and fellowship with Him.
God wants His children to know Him, not merely know about Him.
Teaching Summary.
God still speaks, guides, and leads His people, but His voice should never be confused with personal feelings, desires, pressure, or manipulation.
Not every statement beginning with "God told me" automatically carries divine authority.
Believers are called to test what they hear through Scripture, prayer, wisdom, and discernment.
Spiritual maturity grows when people follow God faithfully rather than surrendering their judgment to human personalities.
The goal is not to become suspicious of everyone, but to become rooted deeply in truth.
Have you ever experienced a situation where someone said, "God told me," and it later brought confusion, pressure, or lessons you never expected?
