A Short Biography of Khenpo Ngawang Tenzin
Venerable Khenpo Ngawang Tenzin is a resident teacher at the International Buddhist Academy (IBA), founded by the late Khenchen Appey Rinpoche - the crown jewel among the wisest - in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Originally from the Himalayan region of Mustang, Nepal, he attended local primary school until seventh grade before becoming a monk. He then began his pursuit of higher Buddhist philosophy at Sakya College in Dehradun, India.
After years of study under the late Khenchen Sonam Gyatso – a true and masterful proponent of Sakya school who was the heart son of late Khenchen Appey Rinpoche – he graduated from Sakya College, India, in 2010. He later received his Master’s degree in Buddhism and Himalayan Studies from Lumbini College, which is affiliated with Lumbini Buddhist University, Nepal.
After completing his formal education in higher Buddhist studies, Khenpo Ngawang joined the International Buddhist Academy (IBA) as a student and later as the resident teacher for non-Tibetan speakers. Beyond his teaching duties at the IBA, he reviews the Academy’s publications and engages in oral and written translations from Tibetan into English and Nepali languages.
In addition to translation work, he has submitted articles and presentations on various topics related to history, Buddhism, and eulogy at different platforms. There are numerous publications under his name, both individually and in collaboration, some of which are forthcoming.
He has had the fortune to serve as translator for the heads of the Sakya order, such as His Holiness the Sakya Gongma Rinpoches, as well as the heads of the Ngor subsect of the Sakya order.
He has been a visiting scholar in the Buddhist Studies departments at Lawrence and Oxford Universities. He also travels widely to academic institutions and Buddhist centers upon invitation to teach Buddhist studies and meditation.
At present, he leads a class at IBA that trains graduate monastics to become translators and writers—with the hope that they will eventually serve the Buddha’s teaching worldwide.
