Vanakkam,
We warmly invite you and your family to join us today in observing the auspicious Thirunavukkarasar Guru Poojai at our temple.

Saint Thirunavukkarasar, affectionately known as Appar (meaning "Father"), is one of the most revered of the 63 Nayanmars (Saivite saints) who lived in Tamil Nadu during the 7th century. His name literally translates to "The King of Speech," a title bestowed upon him by Lord Shiva in recognition of his profoundly moving and beautiful poetry.
Here are a few key aspects of his spiritual legacy:
The Power of the Tevaram: He composed thousands of soul-stirring hymns praising Lord Shiva. His verses form the 4th, 5th, and 6th volumes of the Thirumurai (the foundational twelve-volume collection of Tamil Saivite devotional poetry).
The Path of Humble Service: Appar exemplified the Dasa Marga (the path of the servant). He is traditionally depicted holding an uzhavaram (a small hand-hoe), which he used to lovingly clear weeds, stones, and thorns from temple pathways so that other devotees could walk barefoot in comfort.
A Journey of Transformation: Born into a Saivite family, he initially embraced Jainism and became a prominent monk. After suffering from an excruciating abdominal illness, he prayed to Lord Shiva under the guidance of his devoted older sister, Thilagavathiyar. His miraculous cure marked his return to Saivism and the beginning of his lifelong spiritual pilgrimage.
Appar's life reminds us that the highest form of devotion is often found in deep humility, selfless physical service to the community, and unwavering faith.
