*In Honour and Remembrance of Bro. Mooi Chee Onn* Ted Mooi
“To honour those who are worthy of honour — this is the greatest blessing”
The Malaysia Buddhist Festival recommends honouring outstanding deceased Buddhist leaders and workers with the ceremonial draping of a Buddhist Flag on the casket during the funeral rites. The Buddhist Flag is a symbol of faith, peace and unity which is used worldwide by the Buddhist community.
The purpose of this ceremony is a mark of respect, honour and recognition of deceased Buddhist leaders for their services and contributions to the Buddhist community.
Bro. Mooi Chee Onn passed away peacefully on 13th Jan 2025 at the age of 50. At the time of his passing, he was the President of the Buddhist Gem Fellowship (BGF) and Advisor of the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY). He previously served as a vice-president of WFBY for many years.
Bro. Chee Onn has been very supportive of the Malaysia Buddhist Festival - MBF and Selangor Buddhist Development Council 雪蘭莪州佛教发展理事会 (SBDC) activities and events as a multitasker - as a versatile volunteer, international liaison officer, creative designer, photographer and trainer. Some of the major projects or events organized by MBF and SBDC which involved him are Selangor State Level Wesak Celebration, 3 Great Masters Exhibition, MYWesak60 Photography Competition, Tribute to Our Teachers - a Musical Extravaganza and many others.
On the first day of the funeral wake on 14th Jan 2025, at a funeral parlour in Shah Alam, MBF and SBDC organized the draping of the Buddhist Flag on the casket of the late Bro. Chee Onn. The casket was draped with a tailormade 9 ½ feet (114”) long by 5 feet (60”) wide Buddhist Flag, which is specially prescribed for this occasion.
The ceremony was presided over by MBF/SBDC president, Bro. Loka S K Ng, while the draping was by six representatives of the Buddhist community, especially organizations with close affinity and association with Bro. Chee Onn during his lifetime.
On the final day of the funeral, the Buddhist flag which had been draped over the casket since the first day of the funeral wake, was removed and folded by eight representatives of the Buddhist community, including from WFBY, MBF, SBDC and BGF. The folded flag was then symbolically presented to the late Bro. Chee Onn’s next-of-kin by BGF deputy president Bro. Tee Chee Seng on behalf of the Buddhist community, and conveyed our gratitude and appreciation to the family for the late Bro. Mooi Chee Onn’s services and contributions to the community.
This ceremony concluded with the Buddhist flag draping ceremonial leader Bro. Loka Ng Sai Kai thanked everyone for their presence and support when Bro. Chee Onn was hospitalized, and during the duration of his funeral service.
