Since its founding in the early 20th century, Tay Miang Guan Distillery has stood firmly in Melaka, established by the late pioneer migrant from China, Mr. Zheng Zeshi. Enduring to this day, it represents a legacy of remarkable historical significance.
The present custodian, Mr. Zheng, in recognition of nearly a century of development and heritage in Malacca, has resolved to transform the entire distillery complex into a cultural and historical tourist destination, thereby preserving and continuing the spirit and legacy of its founder, Mr. Zheng Zeshi.
At present, brewing operations at Tay Miang Guan Distillery are still maintained, primarily for demonstration purposes, offering overseas visitors an authentic insight into the traditional Chinese methods of wine-making.
Originally established in the late 19th century, the distillery is renowned for its adherence to traditional Chinese brewing techniques. To this day, it preserves an extensive collection of antiquities, archival photographs, and historical records.
Among these are valuable accounts of the founder, Mr. Zheng Zeshi, and his arduous journey to Nanyang (the Southern Seas) in pursuit of opportunity.
Of particular historical significance is that, beginning in the early 20th century (circa 1919), Tay Miang Guan Distillery also served as a “remittance and correspondence station” (qiaopi agency). At a time when China was experiencing severe hardship in livelihood, employment, and economic stability, Chinese migrants in Malaya relied on this site to send letters and financial support back to their families in their ancestral homeland. To this day, traditional letters and envelopes of various sizes have been carefully preserved in excellent condition and are displayed for visitors from around the world.
In honour of the founder’s enduring contributions and to uphold his pioneering spirit, the representative of Tay Miang Guan Distillery, on behalf of Mr. Zheng, respectfully invited Master Zheng of Tian Tao Gong Temple (天道宫) to officiate solemn ancestral rites for the late Mr. Zheng Zeshi.
Master Zheng first conducted ceremonial prayers at the principal tomb of Mr. Zheng Zeshi.
Thereafter, he proceeded to the distillery premises to perform a second ritual at the ancestral altar located at the rear of the compound, where the founder once resided, thus fulfilling the rites of remembrance and reverence for one’s forebears.
During both ceremonies, auspicious signs were observed, suggesting a benevolent spiritual presence. A gentle breeze arose, encircling both the gravesite and the ancestral altar, creating a serene and harmonious atmosphere.
Additionally, the appearance of a “blessed” insect during the rituals, together with the casting of a positive shengbei (divination blocks), signified spiritual acknowledgement and acceptance.
Tian Tao Gong Temple (天道宫) hereby extends its sincere blessings for Mr. Zheng’s vision of transforming this century-old distillery into a thriving cultural and tourism destination. It is hoped that the site will attract a steady stream of visitors throughout the year, particularly from China, who may feel a profound sense of pride and connection to the remarkable legacy and achievements of their fellow countryman in Melaka.
