BUDDHA DAY OBSERVANCE WEEK:
DEEPENING PRACTICE THROUGH MEDITATION AND DHAMMA

In conjunction with Buddha Day B.E. 2570 Observance Week, two Group Meditation and Dhamma Talk sessions were held on 3 and 4 June at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang and NEO KL Branch respectively. These programmes brought together spiritual friends to meditate, learn the Dhamma, and strengthen their practice in a peaceful and supportive environment.

During the Wednesday session, Sis. Buddhinī Tan shared how a mind guided by wisdom and compassion can avoid creating unnecessary suffering. Drawing from the Sallatha Sutta (SN 36.6), she explained that while physical pain may be unavoidable, an untrained mind adds a “second dart” through aversion, craving, and delusion. Through mindfulness and meditation, we learn to guard the mind, create space before reacting, and respond wisely without generating further suffering.

On Thursday, Sis. Nandinī Tan shared the importance of sense restraint, moderation, and mindfulness in spiritual cultivation. Referring to Ajahn Chah’s teaching of “eat less, sleep less, and speak less,” she explained how these simple, yet profound practices help reduce craving, comfort-seeking, and idle distraction. Through such cultivation, the mind becomes more peaceful and focused, leading to true happiness, inner peace, and liberation from suffering.

We rejoice in the practitioners’ dedication to meditation and Dhamma learning and wish them continued progress on the path to peace and liberation.

HOSTING VENERABLE SANGHA MEMBERS FROM SRI LANKA

On Thursday 4 June, Nalanda members warmly welcomed 17 venerable Sangha members to Nalanda Centre. The visiting monks, comprising lecturers and students from universities in Sri Lanka, are currently on a visit to Malaysia sponsored by Ven. B. Saranankara.

During their visit, they were given a guided tour of Nalanda Centre and the two special exhibitions, providing them with insights into Nalanda’s educational and community outreach efforts.

The venerable Sangha members were pleased to learn more about the life and contributions of the late Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, whose visionary leadership played a pivotal role in the propagation of the Dhamma throughout the region. They expressed deep appreciation for the exhibition showcasing his legacy and the enduring impact of his teachings.

The visitors also rejoiced in the meaningful work undertaken by Nalanda to bring Dhamma to communities through a wide range of educational and outreach programmes. We wish the venerable Sangha members a safe and fruitful journey, and may they continue to succeed in their noble endeavours for the benefit of many.

‘TERIMA KASIH, DHAMMANANDA’ - HONOURING A GREAT BUDDHIST MISSIONARY

Launched on 31 May in conjunction with Buddha Day Observance B.E. 2570, the ‘Terima Kasih, Dhammananda’ exhibition at Nalanda Buddhist Society is a special tribute commemorating the 20th Memorial of the late Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda. Organised collaboratively by Nalanda Youth Centre and Dhamma School, the exhibition features carefully curated exhibits highlighting late Chief’s remarkable journey in Dhamma propagation and the enduring legacy he left behind.

Since its launch, many devotees and visitors have toured the exhibition, guided by the hosting team through displays including late Chief’s personal belongings, photographs, books he authored, newspaper reports, and accounts of his journey from Sri Lanka to Malaysia. Visitors also gained deeper appreciation of his simple yet profound teachings, which continue to inspire people in addressing everyday worries and fears.

The exhibition further honours late Chief’s immense contributions to the growth of Theravada Buddhism in Malaysia, spanning over 54 years from his arrival in January 1952 until his passing on 31 August 2006, as well as his role as the voice of Buddhism in interfaith dialogue. For those who knew him, the exhibition provides an opportunity to pay homage to an exemplary disciple of the Buddha.

All are warmly invited to visit the exhibition.

Devotees gathered at Nalanda on the full moon night of Wesak, Sunday 31 May, to join the much-anticipated Heritage Procession in a collective expression of faith, gratitude, and devotion.

Each bearing candles lit from the flame passed down from the Sri Dhamma Hall, devotees walked peacefully in the Heritage Procession, creating a moving scene of light and reverence.
