Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated primarily by Tamil communities . It honors Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war, and is observed on the full moon day in the Tamil month of Thai. Thaipusam involves devotional acts such as fasting, singing hymns and offering prayers, as well as acts of physical penance such as carrying Kavadis (decorated wooden or metal structures) or piercing the body with hooks and skewers. The festival is seen as a way to purify the mind and body, and to ask for blessings, health, wealth and wisdom from Lord Murugan.
