What is Kathina?
"Kathina", a term rooted in ancient Pali, has its literal meaning of embroidery hoop. Presentation of "Kathina" however refers to annual ceremonial offerings of robes or robe cloth - rather than the sewing tool itself - to Buddhist monastic community. Indeed, a Buddhist tradition of Kathina-robe offerings traces its origin back to Buddha's days when a group of Buddhist monks set out on a pilgrimage from their home town in Patiala to attend an audience with Lord Buddha at Jetavana Monastery. The trek, which spanned through to the monsoon season, had sapped their robes so thread by thread that each turned muddy, rain-soaked and battered by the time the pilgrims reached the Monastery. For this reason, Lord Buddha granted His permission that this group of Patiala pilgrims as well as the rest of Buddhist monastic community who had observed Buddhist Lent (i.e., a pledge to reside in a single place for the whole three months of monsoon season) be presented with new robes or robe cloth by lay supporters at the end of the period. This practice of robe offerings thus commenced and has turned into a tradition in our days, when alms may encompass not only the robes or robe cloth but also a variety of additional gifts: for instance, monetary contributions, flowers and assorted consumption commodities.

It was mentioned in the Nagita Apadana, the Kathina dana (offering) is the highest meritorious deed among the act of wholesome deeds in the realm of Sensual world (Kamavacara Kusalakamma). The advantage and results of merits accumulated by offering of Kathina robe, the Venerable Nagitha Thera had declared that he had enjoyed heavenly pleasures for more than 100 times borne as a sakra or the king of the heaven and being borne more than 1000 times as universal king (Cakkavati Raja in Pali and Cakravarti in Sanskrit) as a result of offering one Kathina robe. According to him he has not suffered in the hell or other unfortunate planes till he attained Arahantship (the highest spiritual achievement of perfection after the eradication of greed, hatred and delusion) after the great wholesome and meritorious deed.
Ven. Nagita Thera, further explained the advantage and results of merits accumulated by offering of Kathina robe, by answering to the question asked by the Buddha how he was so luckiest one with the lot of merits among the monks and all the human beings.

Here I prefer to give only the meaning of three stanzas answered by Ven. Nagita to the Buddha in Pali quoted from the “Kathinanisansa Katha” (the story about the result of Kathina) of the Nagita Apadana: Ven. Nagita pointed out: “I have never experienced in the lower realms in the period of thirty aeons with the advantage and result of offering the Kathina robe to the Noble Community of monks.” “Each and every place of my birth alone with all the worldly luxurious material gained I became a very noble superior person with the result and merits of offering Kathina robe to the Noble Community of monks.” He further pointed out that “I have never known in any lower realms excepts being born only to the human and heavenly world with the results and merits of offering the Kathina robe to the Noble Community of monks.”

Kathina-Robe Offering is a wonderful Buddhist tradition that has been preserved for thousands of years since the Buddha’s time. It is a practice established by the Buddha permitting the lay community to make a respectful offering of robes to monks who have spent three months during Buddhist Lent purifying their mind and body. The objective as envisioned by the Buddha was to foster harmony in the monastic community and to allow virtuous monks with torn robes to receive new sets. The fruit from this good deed is tremendous—as the Lord Buddha expounded in one of His teachings that sanghadāna, the offering of DĀNA, yields positive consequences for the donor.
In other words, those who wish to acquire a great source of merit should perform wholesome deeds with the monastic community.
We would like to invite everyone to make this merit together!
